AMS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It was a sunny and pleasant day for our 2015 Christmas luncheon as friends shared memories and excellent food. Thanks for the Christmas presents you provide for the kids that brought joy and smiles to their faces on Christmas morning. Year 2016 has certainly made its presence felt as some of us are still snow bound or have complaining

backs from shoveling. The Board held its first 2016 meeting on January 28 and have planned five events for the year. More information on the events is presented in this newsletter. For the first time in several years our organization has a vice president. The Board welcomes Andrew Dunn as the 2016 AMS Vice President. Thanks to the members who have generously donated funds for the printing and mailing of our newsletter. Please visit the AMS website and Facebook site often! Until the next AMS News edition!

Attention!!!! The AMS News is one of the primary means for AMS members to “Keeping in Touch and Have Fun”. Unfortunately, the cost for printing and delivering the hard-copy version of AMS News has had a significant impact on our financial bottom line. While we have been fortunate to have receive some postage donations every year, they have not been sufficient to prevent the decline of our bottom line. It seems that the only feasible way to prevent further decline of our bottom line is to reduce the number of hard-copy newsletters that are produced and/or to increase contributions via postage donations. One way to reduce the number of hard-copy newsletters is to download the AMS News from our website www.mapper.com. If you do not have Internet access or are not comfortable using the Internet, you could employ friends, children, or grandchildren to download a copy of AMS News for you. Please respond! Let us know if you no longer wish to receive the hard-copy AMS News and/or you are making a postage donation. Send your response to Merle Biggin, 4808 Walbridge St., Rockville MD 20853 or at [email protected]. Also, if you are making a donation, please consider making periodic donations so that we can continue delivering succeeding issues of the hard-copy AMS News to those who have elected to continue receiving it. Finally, please respond by Valentines Day, February 14, 2016 so that we can plan for our next issue of the AMS News.

Best Friends for 55 years Frank Casamento and Ed Chapman

Ed Chapman was born and raised in Bristol, Tennessee and was living there when he accepted a job offer from the Army Map Service in Washington DC in late 1959. He and his wife Shelby moved to the Washington area following this job offer. Frankie Casamento was

born and raised in Washington DC and was working at AMS when he and Ed first met. They worked together for many years in the Relief Mapping Section. Early on Frankie and Ed discovered that they had a lot in common: They both liked people and loved to party. Frankie introduced Ed and

Shelby to his family and Georgetown friends and they all became good friends. They were also members of the Georgetown Big Brothers Club, which was a social club that raised money to support local youth sporting activities. During this early time period, Frankie went with Ed to visit with his family in Tennessee and Ed’s family accepted Frank as another important member of their immediate family. Frankie and Ed have many memories of their time working together at AMS. They were working together on the same relief model in November 1963 when they received the tragic news that President John Kennedy had been assonated. To this day they both can still remember what they were doing and what they were talking about when they received this terrible news. When Frank met and married his wife Jeanne, both families became even closer. In addition to partying, these two families also vacationed together on many occasions. Both families purchased homes and lived just

about two blocks from each other in Cabin John, Maryland. Frankie and Ed carpooled to work. Even though Ed left AMS in 1977, these two families remained very close. Following retirement, Ed and Shelby purchased a condo in Surfside Beach, South Carolina and moved there in 1994. The two families stayed in touch by phone and email and still visit each other as often as possible. Both couples attended the AMS SC Murrell’s Inlet Chapter event this September.
