Women’s Respite Room furnished for Repairers of the Breach Homeless Outreach Center

Furnishings for Repairers of the Breach Women’s Respite Room given and celebrated on Women’s Wellness Day, February 11 On February 11, at the Women’s Wellness Event, committee members from the St. Matthew’s Women’s Group presented MacCanon Brown, Executive Director for Repairers of the Breach homeless day shelter, with the furnishings for their soon to be completed Women’s Retreat Area. Some of the furnishings for the space were donated while others were purchased from Craigslist with cash donations. Additional items were selected by congregation members from a Target gift registry. In all, the staged rooms (which will be moved to Repairers in late March) radiated love and peace through

their home-like environment to all who viewed them. The project was a true team effort by St. Matt’s. MacCanon and the two former homeless women who came to St. Matt’s Wellness Event to accept the furnishings were overwhelmed and brought to tears by the generosity of the congregation. They commented on how much thought and attention went into making the rooms feel special and they thanked St. Matt’s for helping to make the homeless of Milwaukee feel that they truly matter. Thanks to all who participated in this wonderful project. Heidi Fendos

  • “Whose life could you change with love?” I was driving to get my hair cut the other day. I stopped at a stoplight and a bus pulled across my path. The sign on the side of the bus caught my attention. It said, “Whose life could you change with love?” I don’t know why that phrase was on the bus, or who the sponsor was for the ad, but it got me thinking. Love is a very prominent theme in the Bible – “God is love,” “Love one another as I have loved you,” “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I’m sure you can think of many more verses that speak of love and the importance of love. Love brings life – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Love is the source of good life. Love is something we all want more of and love is something that can be freely given. We’re in the middle of Lent – a time for contemplation and reflection – a good time for the question to be raised, “Whose life could you change with love?” The question fits well with our Lenten theme, “We have seen his glory.” In Biblical times Jesus’ glory was most frequently seen in the difficult places of life – healing the sick, feeding the hungry, teaching those seeking hope and guidance for life. In doing these things Jesus was changing people’s lives with love. Even when he was very tired, Jesus reached out in love to those around him. He spent his time with those most in need. “Whose life can we change with love?” It’s something we can do every day and in ordinary ways. We do it in cooking and serving, in visiting, in working on the Habitat House, and in going on mission trips. We do it in delivering valentines to our members unable to come to church. (I’m always so impressed by how quickly these Valentines disappear from the table outside the office and by how much they are appreciated by those who receive them. Thank you to Renee Mabie and our Sunday school children for making these beautiful gifts.) We change life with love when we give someone a hand, spend time listening to their story or shovel their snow – when we adopt a child, or when we speak gently in times of anger. When we do these things, when we act out of love, we all bring in a little more of the kingdom and our world is better. And we give others the opportunity to declare, “We have seen his glory – full of grace and truth.” Why not focus on changing life with love with those closest to you. Pastor Margaret Schoewe

Experience these sacred places through video and pictures, and the words of Jesus, using That The World May Know by Ray Vander Laan. Our worship and study will provide a path through Sepphoris, Caesarea Philippi, Sychar, the road to Jericho, the Pool of Siloam and the Sea of Galilee. Come to be inspired for what these ancient places have to teach us about life today.

New this year – Scripture Study offeredon Sunday Mornings during Lent Come and join us on Sunday mornings during Lent in this scripture study of the texts for the following Wednesday. LENT 2012: “We Have Seen His Glory”

Your help is needed with our Lenten Art Project“And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen His glory.” These beautiful words from the gospel of John proclaim God’s presence among us: in and through relationships, in his creation, in our lives. Where, when, or how have you felt God’s presence in your life? We invite you to share a “God moment” that you have experienced by representing it verbally or artistically on strips of paper and displayed for others to see as a representation of God’s glory among us. Paper and a variety of materials will be available at the Lenten table in the Commons. Please add your experiences to our visual display of God’s glory.

  • Hunger Close to Home:Reformation Needs YOUR Help Hunger and poverty are pressing issues for the ministry team at Reformation Lutheran Church, and we are blessed to be a part of this ministry through your ongoing and generous contributions to Reformation’s Food Pantry. Another important way that we support their outreach to the surrounding neighborhood is through our involvement in Reformation’s monthly Community Food Day, when neighborhood families are invited to the church to receive a grocery bag filled with a variety of basic foods.

Here are two ways that you can help with Community Food Day • St. Matt’s Saturday at Reformation coming up on March

10th, 9:45-12:00. Join us on March 10th to sort food, fill grocery bags for Community Food Day, and bake cookies for the Neighborhood Store at Reformation. We will meet at St. Matthew’s at 9:45 to carpool to Reformation, returning by noon. If you are able to help, please contact Gretchen Haugse ([email protected], 414-774-0441).

    • Donate Food for Reformation’s Community Food Day. Please bring donations to the shelves that are labeled “Community Food Day” in the food pantry donation area. Donations need to be here by Friday, March 9th.

    the Leadership Transition Process

Great Participation seen and heard in the Mission Exploration Team’s First Congregational Meeting On February 1st, about 40 people from St. Matthew’s

gathered with the Mission Exploration Team (MET) for the first congregational meeting. The gathering produced a lot of dialogue centering around the strengths of St. Matthew’s, areas of ministry to be expanded upon, and the characteristics/leadership style desired in a new lead

pastor. All comments/ ideas/suggestions were recorded and will be a part of analyzing the future direction of the mission of St. Matthew’s and staffing to accomplish that mission. Another meeting was held on February 26th, after the printing of this issue of the Voice. There will be one more opportunity for general congregational gathering to share your input.

Many Happy Returns... Each year we look forward to certain “returns” - the return of daylight, the return of spring, the return of flowers, our tax returns (maybe). Well, this spring we have the “return” of three events for our SAINTS.FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP 1. The return of our “food and fellowship”time following

the morning worship services. It’s a very informal time to share food and conversation with each other. All are welcome and there is no cost.

The dates are February29throughMarch28th.PRESENTATION BY PASTOR DAVID SORENSONTHURSDAY, APRIL 12 2. The return of Pastor David Sorensen. One of our most

inspirational programs was presented by Pastor Sorensen two years ago when he shared his experiences with us about his tour of duty as a military chaplain in Iraq. We invited him to return in January of this year but had to reschedule because of bad weather. He will be with us on Thursday, April 12 to share his further experiences. He suggested he could talk to us about Dover, maybe show a clip from the movie, Taking Chances and show of few slides of a Dignified Transfer. The program begins at 11:00 AM; lunch to follow.

RETURN TO RACINE, BY BUS - FRIDAY MAY 11 3. The “Return to Racine” road trip. Two years ago we had a

great trip to Racine to visit Wingspread, home of the S.C. Johnson Family designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; visited the lighthouse on Lake Michigan, lunched at the Chancery restaurant and visited a delightful farm run by nuns of the Sienna order. But, there was much we wanted to see. Linda Levengood, native of Racine, who has such won-derful memories of her hometown has arranged another tour for us. Last time we carpooled and it took more time than we anticipated. This time we will go by bus.

The date is May 11 - a Friday. Our centerpiece of the tour is the The Golden Rondelle The-ater at S.C. Johnson. Friday is the only day tours are offered.

We will leave the St. Matt’s parking lot at 9:00 AM. Once in Racine we’ll drive through the historical district then further to the DeKoven Center (which looks like a scene from Harry Potter movies). It began as Racine College in 1852. General Billy Mitchell is a graduate of the College and Ralph Waldo Emerson lectured there. Then we’ll continue to a very futuristic house on Lake

Fresh, Local Vegetables Available This Summer Eating local, organic and lower on the food chain (when possible) is an important part of the move-ment to Care for Creation. Eating in this way reduces the amount of fuel needed to transport food, reduces the number of chemicals used in growing the food and reduces the resources needed to produce the food. Farmers around Milwaukee are responding to this trend. Known as CSA’s (Commu-nity Supported Agriculture) there are a number of sites around Milwaukee that offer “shares” in their farm in exchange for boxes of produce throughout the summer. The St. Matthew’s website has just been updated with the 2012 information on many local farms delivering to the area. Once again the home of Kristen and John Charlson will be a drop off site for TIPI Produce CSA. Joining a CSA is a good way to support local farmers and enjoy fresh seasonal vegetables.http://stmattslutheran.org/care-for-creation/csa.html

The meal and the blessing of the donated items were highlights of a memorable time shared. We appreciate very much a few copies of the newspaper write-ups as they come up. We appreciate your storing everything until the space is ready. Thank you, and the others who assisted you, for your extraordinary demonstration of a life focussed on faith and compassion. We are not done thanking you.” Peace,, MacCanon Brown Executive Director, ROTB

A Thank You to St. Matthew’s People who worked on this Women’s Respite Room at Repairers of the Breach Homeless Outreach Center: A special thanks goes out to the committee members: Emily Wanezek, Carol Raasch, Taylor and Jill Nelson, and Pastor Margaret, as well as the congregation members who embraced supporting the Repairers of the Breach Women’s Retreat project. This project was led by HeidiFendos, who spent weeks shopping for good quality and the best deals following a vision of what the room should be. The room now has everything it needs, and we are anxiously awaiting the floor completion so we can move everything into the shelter in late March.

  • Pop a bag of popcorn or sit in your easy chair with a warm beverage on a cold night Let’s share a few of the new DVD’s added to the church library for your viewing pleasure. Courageous, Honor Begins at Home opens immediately with a great deal of action and then transforms to an emotional end to the scene. Hold on to your popcorn, because you will enjoy two hours of emotion, action, and

even some comedy. Ken Bevel, as Hayes (from Fireproof) is new to the police squad. Without the Hollywood glamour, this movie is filled with a deep

message. The film relies on spiritual subject matter, a PG-13 rating, and the targets the Christian viewer, eager for Bigger - Faster - Stronger, yet is family and faith oriented. The Last Bricklayer in America staring Sidney Poitier brings together the young troubled boy, Danny with Henry Cobb who is mourning the death of his wife. Cobb has been asked to build a library at Danny’s school in memory of his wife but lacks the desire to proceed with the project. When 13-year old Danny enters Cobb’s life in search of a refuge from his bickering parents, Cobb becomes his mentor, giving the boy a sense of purpose and a role model. Together they have a passion for life and success. Enjoy the romantic comedy, Heaven is Waiting, which shares the message of finding love again. Ned Stevens still hates the idea of dating and why should he when he has his daughter, Liz to take care of him? Yet, Ned is struggling to understand his little girl growing up and for her judgment in her new boyfriend. Ned meets Carol, the single woman that he sees jogging each morning. To see if Ned takes the bite on the second chance at love, check out this fun-loving selection. The Chase Card shares the message of healing wounds and rebuilding relationships. After police officer Mac McDonald loses his son in an accident, years of bitterness and pain erode his love for his family and leave him angry with God in addition to everyone else. There is a strong message of letting God’s grace enter one’s life with love and forgiveness. There is no need to stop at the nearest Redbox or Netflix with this variety of film selections! Simply stop in the Church Library each Sunday 9:30-11:00am to check out the recent flicks available today! Bev Etzelmueller, St. Matthew’s Librarian

Experiencing Lent with Your ChildrenHelping Create Understanding of the Season for your ChildWith its introspective and sometimes somber tone, Lent can be a season that is dif-ficult for children to understand. But, with a little help, they can become involved in a meaningful Lent and come to understand it as a season of reflection, growth, and renewal. The word lent comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning spring-time. Lent not only happens during the season of spring, but it can be experienced as a “springtime of the soul,” when our faith it nourished and refreshed. Here are some suggestions to help make this Lent a time of faith growth for your children.

Paper Chains:Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for a period of forty days, not includ-ing Sundays, which are traditionally considered “Little Easters.” To help your children conceptualize this forty-day period, construct a paper chain to mark the days of Lent. Since the color of the Lenten season is purple (signifying roy-alty and repentance), you will need forty two-inch wide strips of paper, a white strip for Easter (white is the color for Easter and represents light, purity, faith, and holiness), and six strips of a different color for each Sunday. On each strip, write or draw a way that you can share your faith, such as helping a neighbor, donating food to the food pantry, or saying a prayer for someone. Link the strips together to form a chain, starting with four purple strips, one Sunday strip, and then alternating six purple strips with one Sunday strip, ending with the white strip. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, remove one for each day of Lent, and work together on the task that is illustrated on the strip. (From Before and After Easter, by Debbie Tafton O’Neal).

Crown of Thorns Wreath:Another way to mark the passage of Lent is with a crown of thorns wreath. Make or purchase a grapevine wreath, and wire seven purple candles to it. Place a large white candle in the center of the wreath to represent Easter. Light one purple candle for the first week, two for the second, etc. During Holy Week, begin will all purple candles lit, and extinguish one each day so that no candles are lit on Saturday. Early on Easter morning, light the white candle to celebrate Christ’s res-urrection. (From Before and After Easter, by Debbie Tafton O’Neal).

Look Around You:• Help your children see

the signs of Lent in the sanctuary. What color are the fabrics on the altar, pulpit, and lectern? What color are the pastors’ stoles.

    • Go for a walk and notice the signs of spring and promise of new life.

    • Cut a branch from a bush, place it in a jar of water, and watch as the leaves gradually come out. Talk about the promise that is in the bud and how the promise is realized in the leaf. In the same way, our faith can be renewed as we move toward Easter and the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.

“And We Have Seen His Glory”Our Lenten theme this year focuses on God’s presence among us, based on the passage from John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory.” Spend some time with your children talking about how you experience God. Where do you feel His presence? (We invite you to share these reflections on the strips of paper provided at the Lenten table, which will be formed into a display of God’s glory among us). For more ideas on observing Lent, check out the church library for children’s books on Lent and Easter. And, of course, our Lenten Family Time on Wednesday nights is also an excellent way to observe Lent with your younger children. May this Lenten season bring a springtime of the soul for your family!
