I’ll be honest, the doctrine of belief is perhaps more watered down, than the doctrine of baptism (no pun intended). It’s a doctrine that is more distorted than we may realize. Only in the last few hundred years have precious souls been told, that so long as they believe something about Jesus (i.e., He was a good teacher, a good man, a good prophet, a good moral example) they can be saved. Only in the last few hundred years have people been told, if you just accept Jesus, (don’t bother with worshiping Him, serving Him, or following Him) just accept Him, then you can be saved. The concept of belief has been taken from one of total submission to that of surface recognition. Belief, as God would have our hearts respond to Him and His Son, is much, much more. Every 19 verses in John’s gospel you read the word, “believe.” 46 times through the book the subject is addressed directly or indirectly. That’s why John’s gospel is referred to as “The gospel of Belief.” His emphasis is unlike the synoptic gospels, in that John’s perspective reflects the unique relationship he held with Jesus. He wants the reader to believe in the Lord’s deity - thus the multiple statements of Jesus, “I am...the bread of life, light of the world, door of the sheep, the good shepherd, the way, the truth, and the life, the resurrection, the true vine, the Son of God!” (John 6:35; 8:12; 10:7; 10:11; 14:6; 11:25; 15:1; 10:36). He wants the reader to believe in His ability - the water to wine, the feeding of the 5,000, the healing of the lame man, the blind man, the dead man Lazarus. He wants the reader to believe His humanity - His anger when His Father’s worship was mocked, His tears when Lazarus died, His kindness to the woman at the well, His compassion to the woman caught in adultery, His agony of going to the cross, His prayer for those He loved and would love, and His care for His mother. It’s that last one (His care for His mother) that strikes the most resonate chord of humanity. Of all that surrounded the moment of John chapter 19, the Lord’s concern for His mother rings with the most powerful refrain. Truly why not? After all, she was the first one to believe in His deity, His ability, and His humanity. The relationship Jesus held with His mother proves the universal truth for nearly all mothers and children: no one believes in you, quite like your mother. She’s a champion, a confidant, a caregiver, and your greatest constant. There could have been no greater source of encouragement for our Lord’s life and ministry, than for Him to know He had the presence of His Father. But having the confidence of His mother? You can do nearly anything, when you know she believes in you. What will you believe about Jesus? “While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” (Matthew 22:42). No more important question could be asked of the heart and answered from the heart. I hope you know, it’s not a matter of, “Who is Jesus to you?” but a matter of, “Who is Jesus?” He has one identity, do you believe His name?

    “I Hope You Know”

It’s the bedrock of faith...that we believe. I’ll be honest,

the doctrine of belief is perhaps more watered down, than the doctrine of baptism (no pun intended). It’s a

doctrine that is more distorted than we may realize. Only in the last few hundred years have precious souls been

told, that so long as they believe something about Jesus (i.e., He was a good teacher, a good man, a good prophet,

a good moral example) they can be saved. Only in the last few hundred years have people been told, if you just

accept Jesus, (don’t bother with worshiping Him, serving

Him, or following Him) just accept Him, then you can be saved. The concept of belief has been taken from one of

total submission to that of surface recognition. Belief, as God would have our hearts respond to Him and His Son, is

    much, much more.

Every 19 verses in John’s gospel you read the word, “believe.” 46 times through the book the subject is

addressed directly or indirectly. That’s why John’s gospel

is referred to as “The gospel of Belief.” His emphasis is unlike the synoptic gospels, in that John’s perspective

reflects the unique relationship he held with Jesus. He wants the reader to believe in the Lord’s deity - thus the

multiple statements of Jesus, “I am...the bread of life, light of the world, door of the sheep, the good shepherd,

    the way, the truth, and the life, the resurrection, the true vine, the Son of God!” (John 6:35; 8:12; 10:7; 10:11;

14:6; 11:25; 15:1; 10:36). He wants the reader to believe

in His ability - the water to wine, the feeding of the 5,000, the healing of the lame man, the blind man, the dead man

Lazarus. He wants the reader to believe His humanity - His anger when His Father’s worship was mocked, His

tears when Lazarus died, His kindness to the woman at the well, His compassion to the woman caught in

adultery, His agony of going to the cross, His prayer for those He loved and would love, and His care for His

    mother.

It’s that last one (His care for His mother) that

strikes the most resonate chord of humanity. Of all that surrounded the moment of John chapter 19,

the Lord’s concern for His mother rings with the most powerful refrain. Truly why not? After all,

she was the first one to believe in His deity, His ability, and His humanity. The relationship Jesus

held with His mother proves the universal truth for nearly all mothers and children: no one believes in

you, quite like your mother. She’s a champion, a

confidant, a caregiver, and your greatest constant. There could have been no greater source of

encouragement for our Lord’s life and ministry, than for Him to know He had the presence of His

Father. But having the confidence of His mother? You can do nearly anything, when you know she

    believes in you.

What will you believe about Jesus? “While the

Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” (Matthew 22:42). No more important question could be asked of the heart and answered

from the heart. I hope you know, it’s not a matter of, “Who is Jesus to you?” but a matter of, “Who is

Jesus?” He has one identity, do you believe His name?

MAY HAS BROUGHT ABOUT…. some interesting weather thus far, but is shaping up to be an incredible month. I want to share something with you that I am super excited about! This summer, our Wednesday night Jr. and Sr. High class will be experiencing the Strong Enough Youth Series. This series came about by a simple question asked of our teenagers, “What are some struggles that you have, that you simply do not feel strong enough to overcome?” From this question came a flurry of answers that frankly surprised

me. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the struggles that our teens are facing are real, they are difficult, and they are there everyday! The purpose of this series is to specifically address some of the topics that were brought up in class so that we might have our eyes opened to how we can overcome these struggles. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “And God is Faithful, He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” Talking with our teens, I believe that they understand this passage and believe this passage, however in the face of temptation they simply struggle to see a way out. From our discussion we have come up with nine topics that the typical teenager does not feel strong enough to overcome. Each Wednesday night, we will have a different speaker coming to address these topics! All 6th-12th grade students are to go straight to the Lighthouse on these nights rather than going into the auditorium.

Everything will begin at 7p and finish around 8p. For a full list of the speakers who will be coming, check out the church website! Invite a friend or two, this is a series that I know will be a blessing to your life, as it already has been to mine!

OUR FIRESIDE FINALE HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR…. Tuesday night, May 15th. As always, our Fireside Finale will be held at an undisclosed location only found by those who can figure out the clues and complete their assigned task! This night is an absolute blast and a great way to cap off a great school year! Everything kicks off at 5p and concludes at 9p! It’s sure to be an awesome night!

CAMP KERUSSO IS ONLY WEEKS AWAY, KICKING OFF…. on May 27th! This is open for any young man going into

the 6th grade through the 12th grade! This isn’t just a camp for someone who wants to preach, this is for any young man who wants to discover how he can be a leader in the Lord’s church! There is no cost, applications are up on the website! Light the Way-Chris
