Service Hymns

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made

I see the stars; I hear the rolling thunder,Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to TheeHow great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to TheeHow great Thou art! How great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeurAnd hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in

That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamationAnd take me home, what joys shall fill my heart!

Then I shall bow in humble adorationAnd there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

It Is Well With My Soul

When peace like a river attendeth my way; When sorrows like sea billows roll,Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say; “It is well, it is well with my soul.”

Refrain: It is well with my soul; It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come; Let this blest assurance control,That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin... Oh the bliss of this glorious thought; My sin, not in part, but the wholeIs nailed to the cross and I bear it no more; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Oh my soul.

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live: If Jordan above me shall roll,No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life; Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait, the sky, not the grave, is our goal;Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord! Blessed hope, blessed rest for my soul!

And Lord haste the day when the faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend.

Even so it is well with my soul.

Life Story

Ercy Verlinda Christian was born on 27 March 1925 in the mountains of Manchester, Jamaica. She was the eighth and last child ofDavid and Mary Rodney. She had six sisters and two brothers.

She attended Praville Primary School in Manchester, Jamaica and later was awarded a scholarship to attend St. Simons College inKingston, Jamaica but because of the lack of finances for personal expenses, she was only able to fulfill one term in college. Herdream was to be a secretary.

Although she could not fulfill her career dreams, she remained in Kingston and at the age of 16 she secured employment with ChensEmporium, a department store, as a clerk where she remained for a number of years and was well liked by the owner and customers.By ‘luck’ or perhaps it should be regarded more appropriately as by divine providence, she was living in an apartment in Kingston nextdoor to a lady who would become her good friend and who had a brother from Cayman Brac who visited his sister from time to timewhen he took vacation from his work as a seaman and which brother, Cradwick Ballenger Christian, quickly stole her heart and on 21January 1953 in Kingston, Jamaica they were united in marriage and became sweethearts forever. From this union, 7 children wereborn to them. Before meeting her husband, she was blessed with a son, Errol Harris.

She remained in Kingston until her first child was born to them. As her husband was a seaman and would be away for long periods oftime and as they found it more affordable, she returned to her country home in Manningsfield, Manchester, Jamaica in 1954 to live.Four children were born to her while living in the “country”. In 1961 she moved to St. Andrew, Jamaica and two more children wereborn to her while living there. She had fairly good money management skills and her husband trusted her without reservations with thehandling of all the financial affairs of the family. Before moving to St. Andrew, she first made arrangements to secure an affordablehouse in which to continue raising her children and made all the arrangements to pack us up and moved her cildren out of the ‘country’.This house was not just a home for her family but it became a place where throughout the years on special occasions we enjoyed manydelightful family gatherings and at random times people would drop by for a visit, mostly family members. On every occasion she al-ways made everyone feel welcomed, from the rich to the poor in her family. She also did her best to give her children the best educa-tion affordable and provided for every need.

In 1976, she moved to Mt. Pleasant, West Bay, Grand Cayman with her husband and children.

Having a great love for plants, in 1980 she secured employment at Vigoro Plant Nursery for a number of years. Subsequently, recog-nizing that she had a green thumb, she opened her own plant nursery called Chrissy’s Nursery at her home in Mt Pleasant, West Bay.She was able to grow some of the most beautiful plants. People were always coming to buy from her. She not only grew her ownplants but also imported plants. Over the years she acquired a good knowledge of the names of the various plants and was able to ad-vise many with respect to the names and proper care of those plants.

During her time at Vigoro Nursery and also as a result of owning her own plant nursery, a good cross section of the Cayman communi-ty became well acquainted with her. She became affectionately known as Ms. Chrissy, Ms Christian and Ms Linda.

She was a humble, friendly, pleasant, humorous, strong, independent, caring, take charge kind of person. She loved people and peopleloved her. She had a big heart and was always willing to help others as much as she could and also defend them if necessary. She was an amazing, loving mother and above everything else she delighted in taking care of her children. She believed in God and could have been considered a ‘religious’ person as she held to christian principles as much as possible but in1980 she fully gave her heart to Christ and was no longer Christian by name but became Christian by nature. She held to her faithsteadfastly

She was very strong and active. However, in 2015 her health started to decline and in January 2019 she succumbed to medical compli-cations. Ercy Verlinda Christian went on to glory on Thursday, 3 January 2019.She is survived by seven of her children, Errol Harris, Tereseta Parchmont, Donna Watler, Blair Christian, Gary Christian, CharmaineWilliams and Michelle Braxton. Her grand children, Suzanne Henry, Simone Harris, Mikol Watler, Christianne Watler, JonathanParchmont, Anthony Parchmont, Genova Cordero, Genesis Christian, Gaby Christian and Amber Braxton. Her great grandchildren,Marc-Anthony Parchmont, Mathew Parchmont, Eli Parchmont, Arianna Watler, Alex Henry, Alana Henry, Luke Johnson, DeborahCordero. Sons-in-law David Braxton and Ernie Williams. Special nieces Daisy Harriott, Yvonne Woon and other nieces, nephews andfriends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cradwick Christian, her son Dave Christian and all her siblings.

Mommy has lived long enough to prove that a mother’s love can stand the test of time. Although in her later years she was unable to do many things for us as she oncewas able to, she never stopped loving and caring for us. She continually cared about us or we should say worry about us and felt our pain with us. We are thankful thatshe knew the power of prayer especially later on in life when she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and savior. It has helped to carry us through. It was remarkable how she kept in line 7 children on her own as daddy was away at sea most of the time working to provide for us. She was resourceful, strong andfaithful. She unselfishly cared for us. We were priority in her life. Never do we recall ever being left alone or in someone elses care while she went off somewhereeven just to take a breather. Mommy always made sure that the shelter over our heads were maintained, that we were well educated, clothed, had three meals a day andmore and every need was met. We had need of nothing. We remember her very hearty laugh that even her parrot has picked up, her good sense of humor and how her personality would draw people to her.Although it has been a while since she was able to cook, we can’t forget her cooking. She was an excellent cook. Every meal delicious. Donna remembers the stewpeas, best ever, sooo good. Terry remembers the ginger string beans and beef, yum. Mommy also made an excellent carrot cake, loved by all. It was a delight to cometo the table at meal times. Terry says her cooking inspired her and she developed a passion for cooking.Mommy was also very good at sewing which was an inspiration to Donna and Charmaine. A gift which continues in them.Mommy was also a disciplinarian. If the rod was needed she used it. She did her best to keep us in line but always with love. Not sure which one of us got the mostwhipping, perhaps Gary. There is more that could be said about this. She delighted in her children. She would always say “I enjoy taking care of my children” and “I love everyone of you”.Mommy, we are proud to have been blessed with a mother like you and that God gave you to us for so many years. Thank you for always being there for us. You de-voted your life to us and for that we are truly grateful. We will miss you but we know where you are – can only imagine how happy you must be.

With much loveWe’ll see you againTerry, Donna, Blair, Gary and Charmaine

“A beautiful heart can bring things into your life that all the money in the world could not obtain.”This quote so beautifully describes my mom. No one could ask for a more loving, nurturing person to be their mother. With that I was truly blessed. My dad was at sea a lot but my mom was home caring for her many children. I remember her always cooking which took a while as she made almost every meal (eventhe candies we ate and the juices we drank) was made from scratch. As a child, I remember many people (mostly family members) popping by the house and she made each person feel welcomed and no one left without being fed.My mom had a strong faith in God. She was a woman of prayer and she loved to praise and worship God.Throughout my life she demonstrated true unselfishness. She had a huge heart and is greatly missed but she’s no longer suffering but is alive in perfect health rejoicingin heaven.

Love you MomI’ll see you againMichelle

BORN ERCY VERLINDA RODNEY TO DAVID AND MARY RODNEY in deep rural Jamaica Manningsfield, Manchester, Linda as she was affectionately called, came from a poor family, grew up with love and inculcated with values that shaped her to be the wonderful mother of eight, and faithful wife to Cradwich Christian, avery wonderful humble man from the Brac. She was Aunt Lin to many who looked to her for sustenance and guidance, she faced many challenges in life but with herfaith in God and nurtured in the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ she overcame all adversity to become the matriarch of her immediate family and mother and friend tomany. She migrated to Cayman early seventies and lived in West Bay where Daddy Chris, as he was affectionately called, had managed to buy a house. Guiding and nur-turing a family was not challenging enough so she turned to her plants and flowers that complimented the beauty of the inner person and cemented her love for nature. This drew her even closer to the Lord our God who blessed her with a long life. Her life has been an inspiration to many and we know she is now with the Lord.

Mamma Lin, walk goodLove you foreverErrol

Tributes

Family and friends,

I offer you my deepest sympathies in this time of mourning. I pray you find comfort as we celebrate the life and legacy of Ms. Linda Christian.I first met Ms. Linda almost 30 years ago when she came to Boston for my future wife’s graduation. I remember her energy and vibrance. She was kind, loving and alittle bit on the loud side. Her presence commanded respect. I knew if I was ever to win Michelle’s heart, I would need and ally. And, Ms. Linda would soon becomemy greatest ally.As Michelle and I began to build our relationship years later, Michelle would tell me that her mom had always asked about me, and she would say to her, “He’s a goodboy”. Her mom’s prompting encouraged Michelle to stay in contact. As time passed, and I came around the family, they would have questions about me, especially Linda’s husband, Chris. Linda would stand up for me, saying “He’s agood boy!”In time, Michelle and I got married, and I was welcomed into the family. Linda remained my champion and always encouraged me to do well.A short time after being welcomed into this family, I gave my heart to the Lord. I’ll never forget how she celebrated when she heard. She laughed and loudly shouted“Hallelujah!”. Her face lit up and she smiled at me like I had never seen her smile before. It caused me to give deep consideration to the value of my faith, and my deci-sion to follow Jesus. In the weeks that followed, she would continue to encourage me to embrace this faith. I remember hearing her say the words, “Now that you’re aChristian …”, followed by words of hope, and a vision to live up to.I have many great stories and memories that I wish I could share. It breaks my heart that I cannot be with you all at this time. Certainly, my heart and prayers are withyou all. I weep even as I write this letter, but I am encouraged by Linda’s faith for salvation in Christ Jesus. I pray that is a comfort for us all.I send love and condolences on behalf of the New England family; from Joan & Donald Leonard, Jordan and Jessica Braxton, the entire Saunders clan, and The RiverChurch Family of Haverhill, Massachusetts.May Linda rest from her labors, in the comfort of the Lord.May God continue to look after her loved ones still on the earth.

Love and Blessings,David Braxton.

Some of my best memories were spent at my Grandma’s house. Many of my young days along with my brother Jonathan and two cousins Mikol and Christianne werespent there as I grEw up, from a baby in diapers, to a preschooler, to a teenager. Running through the back and side yards, gathering solider crabs and chasing lizards. There used to be nice big treeS in the front yard where I used to spend most of my time playing around and climbing it. This is where Grandma sees me from the veran-da and call out “Monkey” a pet name, well one of them that she always referred to me as. She also had another favourite pet name for me , Ugly Mug, that she calledme all the time, for which I don’t know why! As time passed I grew taller, this gave me the opportunity to give her a pet name as well, I called her “Chiney” as she wasshort and tiny. She always smiled when I said it.Grandma’s cooking now was something, now she could cook, I mean cook. Among most things, she made some of the best mouth-watering fish fritters, I absolutelyloved them. Another dish I remember, was her oxtail and broad beans that she cooked nearly every day. This is what I would eat after school for many years besidesmy macaroni and cheese. I could go on and on about her cooking for many pages because there are so many delicious and savoury dishes. Don’t get me wrong thoughbut there was a few weird ones too, like stuffed FuKa.If she was not cooking, she was gardening. Grandma was a passionate botanist; she could make anything grow, well besides herself. I can always remember under thecarport, mix her soils and nutrients together in a big bowl, black planting pots stacked high ready to be filled with soil to plant some colourful flowers.Grandma sure did love her pet animals. The ones that I can remember are the dogs named, Vega, Spika, Nonkey, Zara, Nico , the cats snow white and pebbles and ofcourse the parrot named Peppy, the special girl of the bunch, always making a kissing sound and saying “pretty girl” and Mama’s sweetheart. Grandma taught Peppyhow sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Happy Birthday to You.” I know Peppy will truly miss you Chiney. I sure know I will.Grandma, I know the angels will enjoy your company as we all did while you were with us. At least the Captain has his First Mate as part of his crew again, now allaboard the Christian Express, sailing throughout the heavens.Til we meet again,Love Ton Ton

My grandmother is nothing short of amazing! To Christianne and I she was always kind and compassionate. To people she encountered she was always graceful and awoman of class. She had a great sense of humor with a razor sharp wit. I don't recall anyone ever speaking ill of her. Most of all, she always had a great testimony forChrist.I can remember growing up in her house and always looking forward to the days when her new plant orders would arrive. We could barely wait for the plants to be tak-en out of the cardboard boxes so that we could use said boxes to fashion a submarine, an airplane, a car, a fort, etc. Though it looked like total chaos on her front lawn, she would graciously allow our imagination to run wild.In my young adult years, I had made mistakes in life, but she had never turned me away. Instead, she always made me feel loved and welcomed. She would always tellme that she was praying for me and I know God heard and answered her prayers. When I accepted Christ as my Saviour, she told me that she was so happy and I could see the genuine exuberance on her face. Then in years that followed, when wewould meet she would always ask me questions about my family and my job. She would share stories from her past and even exercise that sharp wit she possessed bytelling a joke to which moments later I would finally get. After we had chat and before I would leave to go home, she would always say,  "I'm praying for you!" " I'm so proud of you! " "Grandma loves you!" Those wordsmeant more to me than she knew this side of Heaven and I am so very glad to know that one day I will see her in Glory and be able to express to her how grateful I amto have had her as my grandma.

Everytime I think about my Grandma Linda, I think of warmth, smiles, laughter, and hope. Living in the US, I have not had the opportunity to spend as much timewith her as I wished. However, every visit and every phone call ended with, "And you be a good girl and keep serving theLord." Her testimony consists of encouragement, hope, joyfulness, peace, and love. I cherish every moment I have had with her, from the serious talks about the strugglesof life to the hilarious moments. Even though I wish she was still here, she is finally home.  I have an unrelenting peace knowing she is with the Lord, my grandpa, and all the family before her. No longer does she have to fight for her earthly life, but can peacefully live in eternity. Her legacy is going to live on through the heartsof all of us.

With LoveAmber
