Yr 9 student is a member of the WA State Rhythmic Gymnastics team

What an achievement! Congratulations go to Mikaela, one of our current Yr 9 students who recently competed in the Australian National Championships as part of the WA State Rhythmic Gymnastic team.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Term 2 has been exceptionally busy with a range of student activities and events. Students have shown themselves to be great ambassadors for Kinross College. Staff have engaged in professional learning that will develop our new business plan and our main aims of raising student achievement and fostering student engagement.

The highlight of our term has been the news of the upgrade. Over Semester 2, more information will be provided to the school community on progress.

We have now launched an official Kinross College Facebook page which is proving to be a popular addition to the way in which we spread good news to our wider community. www.facebook.com/kinrosscollege. The P&C have also created their own Facebook page - be sure to ‘follow’ and ‘like’.

Education Minister Peter Collier and MLA Albert Jacob visited the College to announce the $4.5 million cash injection to upgrade Kinross College. Pictured with student councillors Joe, Jessica, Rhianna and Piper along with College Principal, Rod Buckenara.

$4.5 million upgrade

My last point is that, as students, parents and College staff we strive to look past education as a commodity - it is not something you can just buy, but something that has to be actively engaged with, worked upon and talked about. That is our challenge as a school and parents to build that partnership.

Every year the staff at Kinross College host a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for

the Cancer Council. Staff really throw themselves into this very worthy cause and this year was no exception. Each year a dress up theme is chosen and this year's theme was 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', the very popular classic children's novel and film. In case you can't tell, our three staff pictured as Umpa Lumpas are Ms Thompson, Miss Allingham and Miss Dwyer. All staff got involved and together raised just over $1000, a great result!

Erin and Emily, are set to represent WA in synchronised swimming.

What a fantastic and well deserved opportunity for these two Kinross College students, Erin (Yr 8) and Emily (Yr 7). Since winning their places on the WA team they have increased their training sessions to 7 sessions a week - two of which are early morning (5:30-7:30am) at Beatty park - in the outdoor pool! They are certainly determined and driven. The girls will travel together to Rome later this year to compete alongside synchronised swim teams from around the world in the Mediterranean Synchronised Swimming Cup.

We wish Erin, Emily and the team every success.

The following students received awards in recognition of their achievement over Term 2. Awards were acknowledged at the end of term assembly.

Hip Hop dancers, from the City of Joondalup’s Youth Team, visited the

College one Lunchtime to promote their Hip Hop workshops and have some fun

with those brave enough to ‘step up’.

Hip Hop workshops are held every Tuesday between 4pm and 6pm at the Currambine Community Centre.

Science Year 9 have been studying Human Body systems in Science this semester. Some members of 9.4 enjoyed the opportunity to get a close up look at a sheep’s heart. Other, more squeemish individuals, prefered heart anatomy and function explained to them through the less stomach churning plastic model we have for these occasions.

Samuel Osborne entertained a large group of interested students at lunchtime in Week 9 with his incredible beatbox skills. A few students and Mr Stone stepped up to have a go.

Jamie’s Food Revolution Day 2015

“Food revolution day is fighting to put compulsory practical food education on the

school curriculum. With diet-related diseases rising at an alarming

rate, it has never been more important to educate children about food, where it comes

from and how it affects their bodies”•

Worldwide there are more than 42 million children under the age of five who are overweight or obese

•Children today are the first generation predicted to live

shorter lives than their parents •

Diet related illnesses are among the world’s biggest killers

Year 7 Home Economics students participated in Jamie Oliver’s food revolution day, 15 May 2015. Students were able to eat their healthy noodle creations for lunch!

Yr 10s visit West Coast Institute

Year 10 Food Production students travelled, by public transport, to the

Joondalup West Coast Institute of Technology (TAFE) and enjoyed a 3 course meal catered by hospitality

students and apprentice chefs. Students then toured the campus kitchens and were amazed with the equipment and food stores

there. This excursion is to explore a possibility of future studies

in hospitality and to see how a commercial kitchen is run.

It was a pleasant day.

Physical Education

Students at Kinross College have a range of interschool sports and extra curricular activities to get involved in throughout the year. The Phys Ed department has had a very hectic Semester One, coordinating the many carnivals, competitions and other events on offer here at Kinross.

Years 8, 9 and 10 Lightning Carnivals

So far, our Year 10, Year 9 and Year 8 students have participated in their North Coastal Sports Association Lightning Carnivals. Our students represented Kinross College in an exceptional manner. Their behaviour, sportsmanship, effort and attitude were to a standard that made us very proud! We are looking forward to having our students participate in the Year 7 carnival early next term. Well done to all and good luck to the Year 7s!

Interschool Sporting Competition – High School Cup Netball

This semester, students tried out for and competed in the School Sport WA High School Cup Netball competition. Girls across all year groups trialled within a tough selection process in Term 1, in order to represent either our Year 7 & 8, or Year 9 & 10 teams. Once selected, the girls commenced training for the first stage of competition which was a day carnival held at Kingsway early in Term 2. The girls competed with outstanding commitment and sportsmanship on the day. We came up against a couple of ‘specialist netball schools’ within our zone, so the competition was very strong. Unfortunately the girls did not progress to the next stage of competition. I’d like to congratulate all students involved for their commitment and motivated approach to representing the college.

Lower Division (Year 7 & 8) – Jordan, Kayla, Nakia, Maddison, Tilarni, Emily, Zoe, Chloe, Tayla, Hayley and Izzah.

Middle Division (Year 9 & 10) – Emily, Emma, Chloe, Nadine, Moana, Breanna, Sophie, Whane, Rachel, Ame and Renae.

Interschool Sporting Competition – Champion Schools Football

During Term 2, two teams from Kinross College participated in the School Sport WA Soccer Competition. The competition involved a round robin played after school against other teams in our pool. Our opposition comprised Butler College, Wanneroo SHS, Clarkson CHS and Quinns BC, Irene McCormack CC and Joseph Banks SC.

The Year 9/10 Intermediate Boys’ team was relatively unchanged from last year bar a few new faces. The team started well with a 7-4 win over Quinns Baptist College and some very pleasing team play set the team up for the remainder of the games. In the next two fixtures against Wanneroo SHS and Clarkson CHS the team proved too strong for their opposition, coming away with two convincing wins and many multiple goal scorers. In our final fixture we came up against a determined Butler College side who proved a much more competitive opponent and the boys held off a late comeback to win 4-3. Winning every game should see the team finish top of their pool and progress into the knock out phase in Term 3.

In their first year in the competition the Year 7/8 Junior Boys team’ have represented the College with pride and achieved some really great results. The team started off with a solid win in their first game against Quinns Baptist College coming out easy winners 7-0. The next games proved to be a different story with Joseph Banks SC and Butler College proving to be much more skilful opponents and despite some early chances the team was easily beaten in both matches. In the other games, the boys played extremely well against Irene McCormack CC and recovered from an early deficit to win 6-5 (in what was probably our best game of the competition) and won convincingly against Clarkson CHS. A big thank you must go to Mr Fitzgerald who has assisted with the coaching of the team and his knowledge and support has been important to the team’s success. We will have to await other results to see whether we progress to the knock out stage next term.

A big thank you must also go to parents/care givers who have assisted with transporting the boys to and from games. Without your assistance extracurricular events like this would not be possible.

Intermediate Boys’ Team List: Cameron, Stefan, Michael, Don, Alex, Aaron, Ross, Ryan, Kieron, Josh, Miklos, Blade, Lewis, Sean, Andy, Lachlan and Werner.

Junior Boys’ Team List: Kyle, Charlie, Damon, Jamie, Riley, Harry, Craig, Saul, Farron, Jack, Mitchell, Daniel, Sam, Kellen and Euan.

KINROSS POLICE RANGERS

Bunnings Community event

The Kinross Police Rangers were requested to assist our local police departments at the Community event days run by Bunnings during the Term 1 holidays. We attended both days (Joondalup and Clarkson) and assisted police officers in the promotion of community security by attaching anti-theft screws to vehicle number plates to prevent them from being stolen. Many people took advantage of this free service and our Rangers received heaps of positive feedback for their help and willingness to be involved in community service events during their school holiday period. Well done to all involved.

Anzac day march in the city Kinross Police Rangers had the amazing privilege again this year to join other Ranger units from across the state to march in the ANZAC Day parade in the Perth CBD. This year marked the 100 year commemoration of service and sacrifice, and we again had the opportunity to march directly behind the WA Police. It was a truly humbling experience to march in honour of all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations and to be part of a community gathering dedicated to remembering the significance of the sacrifice so many people have made for our country. Our Rangers made us proud as always!

Term 1 - Ledge Point to Lancelin CampWe had another awesome start to our year in Rangers with our Term 1 camp to Ledge Point, Moore River and Lancelin. The first camp helps build unit cohesion and teamwork for new Rangers and facilitates student leadership opportunities for Senior Rangers. The probationary rangers participated in bike riding, kayaking and team building activities in Moore River. Rangers got to go surfing, sand boarding and play beach sports in Lancelin. Our senior rangers paddled over to Lancelin Island in our new ocean kayaks to go snorkelling and also had the opportunity to participate in some stand-up paddle board lessons. Our year 12 trainee instructors had their first exposure to running the team building activities for the probies and did an exceptional job!

We camped over-night at Ledge Point Holiday Park enjoying an ‘outdoor movie’ that evening, even other kids from around the park came to watch! The following day, we hosted a welcome BBQ for parents and families and Ozzie Rider kept us entertained with their variety of inflatable activities!

It was another great camp, a big thanks to all of the instructors and Mr Cooper (our parent helper) for making the camp such a success!

KINROSS POLICE RANGERS

Community Surf Rescue Certificate (CSRC)Our Senior Ranger group participated in the Community SRC course again this year. Rangers completed the theory components during parade time and then completed all of their practical assessments at Mullaloo Beach early in Term 2. I’m pleased to say, we had 20 Rangers successfully complete this course. It makes us proud to know that we have so many students who can actively contribute to their community through providing first aid and practical assistance to others.

Try-a-TradeDuring Week 9, a group of our girls visited Trades North to ‘trying-a-trade’. They spent three days bricklaying, tiling and plastering. This was a special girls only program that Trades North offer and we had 13 students take up this opportunity. The three days have been a real success!

MrEdwardsStudent Services

Whether you are a student, a teacher or staff member at Kinross College, we are a community together.

As students we believe that everyone has the right to a positive, happy and engaging educational experience at our College.

Every member of this community should be able to learn, teach, work and belong, free from any negativity that may impact this

time in our lives.

As a collective group of students we would like to voice our opinions and have them heard.

STUDENT CREED

We all believe that students who consistently display acts of aggression, negativity, anti-social behaviour or disrupt the education and enjoyment of others are not, by their own behaviours, part

of our community.

As students here we ask all students to either accept this creed, or find an alternative place to be educated, as our education here is important to us as it affects our

well-being now, and our future opportunities.

The image we wish to portray to the community isn’t decided by the teachers, or our parents, it is created by all of us, the students, who wear our uniform. As a student at Kinross College, we must

all strive to promote a positive image at school and within the community. This means taking pride in your school, your education and within yourself

at all times.

Students who cannot, or will not comply with these basic rights for all, need to be dealt with accordingly by the staff at Kinross College. They have the complete support of the wider student

body. We also ask the school board consisting of teachers, administration and parents to fully support the Creed.

By signing this creed you are agreeing to these ideals and will support this with positive action/s.
