HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Deforest was born Jackson DeForest Kelley (January 20, 1920) in Toccoa, Georgia to Clora and Ernest

David Kelley and died of stomach cancer on June 11, 1999. Ernest Kelley was a Baptist minister. In my

research for Mr. Kelley I found that he was an avid singer and that he was know to sing solos at the morning

church services. This led to him singing for a local radio station in Georgia.

Before Star Trek he was know for playing heavies in western films. He is best known for Morgan Earp in

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (film, 1957) and Curley Burne in Warlock (1959). DeForest actually appeared

inthree recreations of Gunfight at the O.K. Corral: first as Ike Clanton in 1955 (You Are There, TV series), 2

years later as Morgan Earp (film, 1957) and as Tom McLaury (Star Trek: Spectre of the Gun, 1968).

DeForest worked both in films and television. He appeared in episodes of The Donna Reed Show, Perry

Mason, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Boots and Saddles, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, Death Valley Days,

Riverboat, Lawman, Bat Masterson and Laredo. He appeared in the episodes of Route 66, "1800 Days to

Justice" (1962) as Bob Harcourt Jr. and "The Clover Throne" (1961) as H. Norbert Willis. He had a small role

in the movie The View from Pompey's Head. He also appeared in the Bonanza episode titled "The Decision"

(1962), as a doctor sentenced to hang for the murder of a journalist. The judge in this episode was portrayed by

John Hoyt, who later portrayed Dr. Phillip John Boyce, one of Leonard McCoy's predecessors, on the Star Trek

pilot "The Cage"

But we know him best as Dr Leonard McCoy, that beloved southern-bred doctor on the original Start Trek

series. It is fitting that he plays a doctor because medicine was in the actor's family. His uncle, an eminent

physician, delivered him at his parents' home in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1920 and the young Kelley wanted to be a

doctor, but the effects of the Depression meant that his parents could not afford to send him to medical school.

He played Dr. McCoy in all three season of the series. He continued the role in the first six films of Start

Trek.

Shy by his own admission, DeForest was the only cast member

of the original Star Trek series program never to have written or

published an autobiography; however, the authorized biography,

From Sawdust to Stardust (2005), was written posthumously by

Terry Lee Rioux of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

DeForest regarded "The Empath" to be his favorite Star Trek

television episode.

Belgian astronomer Henri Debehogne. The asteroid is roughly six miles across and takes 3.9 years to circle the

sun. If you would like to see it you would need to have a 14 inch telescope or larger. In mid-July, 4864 Nimoy

will brighten to a magnitude 15. There is another asteroid that bears the name 2309 Mr. Spock, which was

named after astronomer James Gibson’s cat who was named after the character Mr. Spock. Mr. Gibson said the

SSttaarr TTrreekk FFiiccttiioonn Star Trek: The New Adventures – A Quick Stop and Thick Plot

By: Donald Arnold

Bill and company had nearly found the end of their

journey for these lost mysteries. Now, they were on

Vulcan, in the Caves of the Mind, looking at an orb

which supposedly held the katra of Sarek. Now, to

catch you up, Sarek was murdered by the weapon-

ization of Bendii Syndrome by the Symmetrists.

Luckily though, someone managed to get hold of his

katra and encase it in an orb similar to those of the

Prophets of Bajor. Now, Ambassador Spock was

speaking Vulcan words to it, trying to gain some of

his father's mindset and consciousness. This however

was the least of our friends' worries…

******

Sela was set to meet her contact in the dead of night

on a planet long forgotten. This figure, name and face

unknown to Sela, was finally going to meet her. The

Empress was getting impatient when a hooded figure

approached her and said, “Welcome, Empress.”

She looked the figure up and down before asking,

“Welcome to where? And who is welcoming me?”

The figure removed his hood, revealing slightly

singed white hair and a face that had been scarred up

the whole right side. The man finally spoke again,

breaking the silence. He replied, “My name is…

Khan. And this is Ceti Alpha V.”

Sela stuttered slightly. She had read the files. Khan

Noonien Singh was presumed dead... twice. She

stammered, “How... are you alive?” Khan grinned,

nearly laughing as he answered, “My dear girl, it

takes more than a minor explosion to kill a

superman…”

******

James Nicks had turned the area beneath Starfleet

into the largest Borg HQ since the destruction of the

home world. Now, he was beginning to attack and

Earth would be none the wiser…

******

The Enterprise J was in the best mode of stealth

they could be as they arrived at Saturn to find

something they never expected. The planet had been

fully assimilated. Starfleet vessels fitted with Borg

hardware sat in a strange dock. Bill, coming out of

his shocked state, said, “So this is STARSHIPS RAIN?

Nicks wants to attack Earth. It doesn't make sense. I

knew he was crooked, but... a Borg? That's...” Spock

III supplied the words Bill couldn't find: “Not

logical.”

Ambassador Spock explained, “It makes sense. My

father did quite a bit of research on Nicks and

STARSHIPS RAIN, but it was all hidden or destroyed

after his death. However, I recall no reference to

Borg involvement. What is our plan of action?” Bill

answered, “Right now? Nothing. We'll go to Jupiter

and plan, if we have time…”

******

Sela and Khan had a whole fleet prepared. They

were headed to Earth. They would cut off Bill and

friends at Earth and capture Spock, especially now

that he had Sarek's katra and knew more about Sela

than she needed him to. She had booked quite a few

illegal and corrupt works on Romulus and Vulcan.

She could go away for the rest of her life if he caught

her. Khan had his own agenda: James T. Kirk. Since

they had both survived their presumed deaths, Khan

decided it was time to face the man who gave him

these scars.

******

It was all set. The Borg-Federation fleet would

attack Earth. Nicks was so proud of himself. That's

when he heard the awful truth: a starship warp trail

was very slightly detected in a high level scan and a

Romulan fleet was on the way…

NEXT TIME – Our three separated stories will

finally meet. However, what will become of our

heroes…and of Earth?

TO BE CONTINUED.. Donald Arnold is a member of the Hephaestus and has written

many Star Trek fan fiction. If you have any fan fiction you

Reviews Tomorrowland by: Captain MarkAdam Miller

(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

Tomorrowland has been given too much a harsh treatment in the reviews. I think the reason is that you have to think

what it truly is about. The movie stars George Clooney, Hugh Laurie (House), Britt Robertson and Raffey Cassidy in a

story that sort of uses Disneyland/ Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland as the back ground. This goes along with other Disney

movies like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean based on rides at Disneyland/Magic Kingdom. But it is using

an entire part of the park as its basis. The only link is the use of Tomoorowland as a special place where great thinkers

come together to make a better world. The story it self is about George Clooney’s character Frank Walker who was

kicked out of Tomorrowland and Britt Robertson character Casey Newton who is sent to get him to come back to help

Tomorrowland.

The reviews come down harsh saying that it is a gloom and doom type of movie because it talks about global

warming, over population and other global problems. I grant that it does this but this is where they missed the point of the

film. (Spoiler) The point of the film is that if you focus on the negative then you are going to get negative results. The

Hugh Laurie character Nix is trying to get people to understand if they don’t change then the world is going to be

destroyed. To do this he broadcasts all this doom and gloom. The result of all the doom and gloom propaganda is that

things are getting worse and not better. People are depressed because they see everything as hopeless so they continue to

go towards destruction.

This gloom and doom is heavy handed through out the film so the positive point gets glossed over—since it is only in

the last part of the film. This is the reason I can not give it five chevrons. It needs to give the positive outlook more

screen time. The message should be of how are you going to change the world more than you need to change the world

because if you don’t we are doomed. This may have been because we are in a society that is too much world-ends-

tomorrow and not enough as the song says “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow.”

One of the things I liked about this movie is that it showed the innovations that Walt Disney dreamed of and his idea

of keep moving forward. Disney icons in the movie includes "It’s a small World Ride” which debuted at the1964 World’s

Fair in New York, scenes of Space mountains and the song “There is a great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” which is part of

the Carousel of Progress another Disney World’s Fair Ride. I wish they had used some parts of the Carousel of Progress

in the movie as this is one of my favorite rides at Disney.

There are several action scenes that make for some thrilling viewing but it is slowed down by some of the dialog that

is trying to move that plot along. I liked the movie a lot but I think if they took a little more time with it; it could have

been a great movie. The point is better made in the movie “Meet the Robinsons

While on an Away Mission Ambassador Burtyk had finished negotiations with the Gorn. Part of the agreement was an ancient Gorn

manuscript that was of interest to our Archeologist/Anthropologist Brigadier Roy Green. The manuscript talked

of a planet that had trilithium & quadlithium crystals that allow a ship to sustain higher warp speeds for longer

durations. It also talked about food that would sustain a Gorn for days. That was not much interest to me as

most Gorn food had given the crew intestinal trouble.

The only one who would eat it without trouble was Ensign Arnold whose only side effect seemed to be

hyper activity. This was good as the ship had two cargo bays that needed to be inventoried. He had it done

within 4 hours.

Giving the manuscript to Roy, I told him, as soon as his team could, to get it dated and translated. Once the

A/A department had the data they were to give it to Admiral Pete Mohney so that he could get the navigation

department to start looking for the mysterious Planet X. A cadet piped up that “wouldn’t planet X be between

Planets W and Y?” I rolled my eyes at the cadet and said, “This is Star Trek not Duck Dodgers in the 24 and

half Century.”G
