Definition of Narrative

A narrative is some kind of retelling, often in words (though it is possible to mime a story), of something that happened (a story). The narrative is not the story itself but rather the telling of the story -- which is why it is so often used in phrases such as "written narrative," "oral

narrative," etc. While a story just is a sequence of events, a narrative recounts those events, perhaps

leaving some occurrences out because they are from some perspective insignificant, and perhaps emphasizing

others. In a series of events, a car crash takes a split second. A narrative account, however, might be almost

entirely about the crash itself and the few seconds leading up to it. Narratives thus shape history (the series

of events, the story of what happened).

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known- Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities (1859)I’m so glad to be at home again

Red: [narrating] I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I

hope.

Reasons students do not like to read, or fall asleep while watching movies in class, or are already tired of powerpoint presentations…..

With all of these exciting stories in all kinds of genres, why do students struggle to make a reservation or commitment for reading and writing in school?

These students are replacing A’s with Zzzzzz’s…

All those literary techniques and devices……………….Forgetaboutem…. No one stopped reading “Harry Potter” because there wasn’t

enough onomatopoeia. I didn’t love the movie “Jaws” because I liked how the shark never

worked and that I believed someone could shove a tank in a shark’s mouth and then shoot it with a rifle as the “orca” was sinking.

“Titanic” was doomed from the start…all she had to do was move over on that gigantic door.

I didn’t watch “Twilight” because it lacked iambic pentameter..I didn’t watch it because VAMPIRES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SPARKLE.

I’m sure you didn’t read your summer book because you disagreed with the inciting incident in the plot.

Oh and that documentary you were supposed to watch for history class, it had so few kennings that your literary heart was trampled.

And oh my gosh, there was so little alliteration in “The Hunger Games” that I was just waiting for Katniss to say “Gullible Gale Glided Gallantly Going to Get Guppies” just to appease my literary appetite.

The real narrator and narrative story is the story of __ __ __.

Page 14: Anti Drunk Driving Commercial. Definition of Narrative A narrative is some kind of retelling, often in words (though it is possible to mime a story),

Since you guys are known as the “me” generation, I am going to tell you to be selfish and that it is all about YOU.

The freedom to choose your attitude….

Page 16: Anti Drunk Driving Commercial. Definition of Narrative A narrative is some kind of retelling, often in words (though it is possible to mime a story),

Say “I” not “You”

Boredom, happiness, disgust, respect, anger, love, is about you and your appraisals. No one can make you happy or angry or….anything unless you perceive it that way…

Ironically, “I” gives you control over YOU. Empowers you to be responsible for your emotions and decisions.

So let me again ask the question…Why do students struggle so much with reading and writing in school?.....

Because to you it is _________________________

Meaning or Meaningless

Make it matter…What is your alternative.Attitude is not everything, but it is a lot.Empower yourself to choose your emotions

and what floats your boat. Make a difference. Ideas have consequences with victories and

victims.Meaning of life is to give life meaning.Push yourself to a different perspective than

what you are used to…an epiphany will change your life.

Meaningful Strategies for reading and writing.Must dedicate yourself to make a commitment

to the book or the writing. This invokes patience, solitude, empowerment,

accomplishment, contemplation, and need to consume content effortlessly with practice.

What if for each page you got a dollar?Or for each written narrative a dog was

saved? What if it mattered? How can you make it matter?Text to text…text to self…text to world.

I predict a future of hearing loss, blurry vision, low energy, brain problems, and caffeine…the good thing is some day it will matter.

I can’t make you care…and that is not my responsibility because I do not choose your appraisals. I can only set an example for the enjoyment, importance, and meaning that is possible.
