Each local authority area in Scotland has a Third Sector Interface to ensure that the third
sector is effectively supported and represented at the local level. Interfaces are funded to
deliver the following four areas of activity across the whole local authority area:
Promote and develop volunteering;
Support Social Enterprise development;
Support and develop a strong third sector;
Connect the third sector to the community planning process.
This document brings together the training opportunities provided by the Midlothian TSI.

Business Continuity
If your premises burned down tonight, could you deliver a service

Business continuity management is all about planning for the unexpected,
understanding the potential for things to go wrong, and working out what you
need to do to survive. It is about increasing organisational resilience and
ensuring a flexible, effective response in uncertain times. For example, we all
learned a lot about emergency planning from the cold winter last year—but have
we all changed our policies and procedures to meet future emergencies?
This session offers an introduction to the principles of business continuity
management and provides some tools and templates for building a business
continuity plan. The sessions will look at the principles of business continuity
management and relevance to the voluntary sector, including:
Identifying what threatens your organisation?
The three stages of business continuity planning:
1. Emergency response;
2. Crisis management;
3. Business recovery.
A suggested approach to developing a business continuity plan.
A template will be provided at the training with key information on sources of
support from Midlothian Council and other statutory agencies.
Learning Outcomes
Learn how business continuity management can strengthen your organisation;
Assess the main threats to your organisation;
Understand the principles of business continuity management;

How Secure is Your Data?
Data security is the process of making sure information you collect or store
electronically is available only to those who need to use it for a legitimate
purpose. The Information Commissioner states that if you hold and process
information about your clients, employees or suppliers, you are legally obliged to
protect that information under the terms of the Data Protection Act.
The risks of getting it wrong include:
• Financial and reputational costs. A data breach can be expensive to put right and will reduce customers’
confidence in your organisation;
• You may receive a monetary penalty of up to £500,000 from the Information Commissioner’s Office
(ICO).
The session will have two parts:
The first part, run by the Information Commisioner’s Office, will look at what data security responsibilities
organisations have, including High Level overview of the DPA; When things go wrong (enforcement);
When things go right (examples of good practice identified in Audits and Advisories); The information and
help available to support the 3rd sector (https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/charity/).
The second part, run by Ian Wragg, Midlothian Council’s Information Security Officer, will focus on
Principle 7 (the security aspect of the DPA) providing practical and easy to follow advice to secure
information, including Securing email; Securing Portable Devices; Securing Paper Records; Secure Data
Destruction; Using Cloud Services.

Support, Supervision and Appraisal
It is well documented that staff work better if they get focused and
constructive feedback. Unfortunately making sure that you give this to
staff is sometimes easier said than done. Too often people’s efforts fall
between two stools. Either they get caught up in an overly
bureaucratic nightmare of forms and endless meetings or they think
that their half-murmured asides will suffice. Another pitfall is confusing
Support and Supervision and carrying out a mishmash that provides
neither.
The aim of this session is to look at the various models and procedures
that are used in different organisations to allow you to choose what
would be most suitable for you. The differences between Support,
Supervision and Appraisal will be explained and demonstrated. The
ways in which they fit together and how one can develop out of the
others will be explored with emphasis on how to use them practically.
At the end of the day you should have a clear idea of how you intend
to proceed and some confidence that you will achieve it.
By the end of the course participants should:
Gain knowledge of the differences between Support, Supervision
& Appraisal;
Know how to use different processes to gain the best outcome
for the organisation and the individual;
Be able to construct an effective appraisal system where this is a
relevant process for their organisation and staff;
Feel more confident about their practical skills in these areas;
Understand best practice on appraisal processes and
administration.

Being an Effective Minute Taker
A carefully planned Agenda will help your meeting run smoothly and is a tool
to make sure all important items are discussed.
The phrase “will you please take the minutes” can cause strong men to
tremble! This training session aims to take some of the fear out of minute
taking. It is aimed at people who have very little, or no, experience at
taking minutes. People who would like to refresh their knowledge are
welcome to come along too.
By the end of the course delegates will have covered the following:
The purpose of minute taking;
Different styles that can be used – how to decide what suits your group
best;
Tips and hints for the minute taker.
The course will be a mixture of presentations and discussion. Bring along a
sample of your minutes and the trainer can give you direct help to improve
your skills. Sample minutes will be available for delegates to look at.
