ILCIllinois Leadership® Center
ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015
Our work at the Illinois Leadership® Center is to continue to study and teach the skills for effective leadership relevant to 21st Century professional and community realities. The Illinois Leadership Coordinating Committee and the Illinois Leadership® Center staff have made tremendous progress this year. After holding Campus Conversations on Leadership Education in the fall, we have revised our “Philosophy of Leadership” and are working to update our “Leadership Skills and Attributes” to an “Illinois Model of Leadership Education” which will include core competencies in the areas of self, team, organization, and society. Over the 2015-2016 academic year we will fine tune our new philosophy and model of leadership, while developing a strategy to introduce this to our campus community. This will guide our work as we strive to integrate leadership education into every component of the Illinois student experience.
Gayle Spencer, Ph.D.Director, Illinois Leadership® Center
Having completed my first full academic year at Illinois, I am continually grateful for the opportunity to engage in leadership education with such bright and engaged students, faculty, staff and alumni. Without the support of all the students, facilitators, coaches, volunteers, donors, corporate partners and campus colleagues, we would not be able to accomplish the important work of the Center.
In the words of James McGregor Burns, “Leadership is the most observed, yet least understood, phenomena on earth.” We will continue to strive towards “seeking to be an internationally acclaimed provider of leadership education, research and practical opportunities for students.” Please stop by to see us if you are ever on campus!

The Illinois Leadership® Initiative was established in 1999 with the belief that everyone can develop leadership skills. In 2002 the Illinois Leadership® Center (ILC) opened its doors to teach Illinois students the skills they would need to be effective leaders. We believe the best way to for students to learn is through education, experience, and reflection. The Illinois Leadership® Center does this by providing the following services at no cost to students:
i-Programs are day-long developmental training sessions where students deepen their understanding and ability to implement a focused area of leadership practice. These i-programs occur multiple times throughout the year, as well as during summer and winter breaks.
The Illinois Leadership® Center offers two types of workshops:
StrengthsQuest™
Students have the ability to assess their specific areas of talent using the StrengthsFinder personal assessment then have instruction from an Illinois Leadership® Center facilitator on how to turn those talents into areas of strength.
Alumni workshops:
Several times each semester, alumni are invited back to campus to share their practical expertise and advice with students on various topics for professional and personal success.

For students interested in making a deeper commitment to their development over the course of several semesters, the Illinois Leadership® Center offers a Leadership Certificate. The Certificate incorporates both academic and co-curricular educational experiences combined with the ability to apply learning in practical settings. Additionally, each student receives a leadership coach to assist them on their journey, and their accomplishment is celebrated during a Leadership Certificate completion ceremony.
Officially offered in the fall semester of 2011, and administered academically by the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, this 17-18 credit interdisciplinary minor is open to all students regardless of their chosen major or academic background. The minor consists of three foundational courses, a capstone course, and two context courses, all in the study of leadership. Students can currently select from 24 context courses, across 12 disciplinary areas.

In the fall of 2014, four sessions of the Illinois Leadership Center’s Campus Conversations on Leadership were held. Over 261 students, faculty, and staff participated. The data collected on over 3000 post-it notes provided themes for competencies and approaches/practices to cultivate leadership on campus. As a result, the ILC Philosophy of Leadership Education was revised and renamed Leadership Philosophy at the University of Illinois. There will also be a new model of leadership featuring core competencies under the categories of self, team, organization and society.
2014-2015 Highlights:
Campus Conversations
Leadership and Diversity Summit
This year the ILC recruited a team of 14 faculty and staff members to serve as facilitators for our StrengthsQuest workshops. This team went through Gallup® training to become versed in StrengthsQuest and combined to help facilitate 97 workshops reaching over 3200 students. The creation of this group has allowed the ILC to reach more students and provide leadership education across campus.
StrengthsQuest
The Illinois Leadership® Center along with University Housing, McKinley Health Center, New Student Programs, Diversity & Social Justice Education, and paid in part by the Student Cultural Programming Fee, co-sponsored its third Leadership and Diversity Summit. The Summit, which had 107 attendees, focused on:
Evaluating the impact of one’s identities on their approach to leadership
Learning to process and digest being challenged to recognize one’s personal bias
Developing strategies to engage in and host conversations about difference

The ILC launched the #illinileaders video campaign this year, where we conducted interviews with students and administrators to discuss the importance of leadership and how it has positively impacted their lives. All of these videos can be seen at www.youtube.com/TheLeadershipCenter. The ILC also conducted focus groups with ILC program participants and non-participants to better understand the brand image of the ILC on campus.
Marketing InitiativesThe ILC hosted two alumni workshops this year. In the fall, former Director of Management Development with IBM, Jack Bowsher, spent an evening with students discussing the importance of leadership in rising to the executive ranks. In the spring, the CEO and Chief Geek of LexTech, Alex Bratton, gave a lecture on the importance of innovation and entrepreneurial leadership.

“I had a really great small group. The people that attend these workshops are always very friendly and willing to share.”
“It was a comprehensive workshop that gave us an opportunity to talk about our beliefs, challenge how we define certain concepts (like integrity and character), and recognize the important role that integrity plays in a leadership role.
“I learned a lot during listening styles. I always know what interests me more when listening to other people, but this time I have all the styles summarized for me and I think the booklet will benefit me a lot.”
“The StrengthsQuest did a great job of outlining my top five strengths, and gives me an impressive description that I can use at a job interview or mention in my resume.”

Rolls Royce has served as a valuable partner for several years. In addition to funding, several Rolls Royce employees have served as facilitators at i-Programs and are current Leadership Certificate Coaches.
Individual and Corporate Partner Support
Gifts from individuals and corporate partners are essential for the Center to sustain the growth of its programs and initiatives. With limited space in existing i-Programs, an expanding Leadership Certificate program, and a growing Leadership Workshop series, there is significant demand from students for opportunities to continue to expand their leadership competencies. To meet this demand, the Center is in need of additional financial support, which may come in the form of endowments and annual gifts. To learn more about the ways you can invest in the Illinois Leadership® Center, please visit our website at www.leadership.illinois.edu.
Rolls-Royce and Caterpillar provided funds which supported the Leadership Center’s programs. Their support allowed us to continue offering high-quality leadership development opportunities at no cost to students.
Corporate Partners
Caterpillar, Inc. began its partnership with the Illinois Leadership® Center in 2008 via the Brilliant Futures Campaign and continues to be a supporter of the Center. Caterpillar, Inc.’s support helps the Center reach a large number of students through the Workshop series, by providing the funding to purchase StrengthsQuest™ access codes.

Anthony ‘Tony’ J. Petullo (Class of 1961, College of Business) has been a long-time advocate and supporter of the Illinois Leadership® Center. While Tony has made many gifts to the Illinois campus at large, his lead gift laid the groundwork for leadership at Illinois as we know it today. To recognize his investment in the leadership development of Illinois students, Tony was honored by having the Insight program renamed to the Petullo Insight program.
Richard Cavenaugh (Class of 1982, College of Engineering) and Timothy R. Cavenaugh (Class of 1979, College of Fine and Applied Arts). The Library contains over 1,000 popular press books, research texts, multimedia resources, and materials. Because of the endowment, the Center is able to provide the most recent leadership resources to the campus community.
John Graf (Class of 1981, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) was influenced by his experience as a working college student. Mr. Graf and his wife Maureen provided funds to endow a pre-professional internship program. The Graf Internship provides valuable leadership and organizational skills in a professional environment.
Tracy Glancy (Class of 1976, Liberal Arts and Sciences). An involved student in her time at Illinois, Tracy understands the benefits of leadership development for college students. Tracy has made a commitment to create the Glancy Leadership Endowment. These funds will ensure leadership development opportunities are available to all Illinoisstudents through the Center.
Jeffrey and LeeAnn Moss endowed the Jeffrey Moss Memorial Fund in order to recognize the work of campus collaborators working with the Leadership Certificate Program as they serve as Leadership Coaches. The Memorial Fund recognizes the legacy of Jeffrey Moss, who was known for his passionate support and mentoring of students.
