Mediate It!

OUR MISSIONEstablished in 1979, the Community Dispute Settlement Center (CDSC) is a private, not-for-profit mediation and training center dedicated to providing an alternative and affordable forum for resolving conflict.

CDSC promotes better ways to understand and deal with conflict through skilled teams of pro bono mediators, training programs in mediation and conflict management, and broad community outreach.

We are committed to making our services accessible to underserved populations and to addressing emerging community needs.

Why CDSC Matters: Leading a Conflict Revolution.

1,545 people benefited from CDSC’s peacemaking activities.

MEDIATION SERVICES: 648 people served.392 referrals screened and 256 disputes mediated. CDSC measures success by progress toward resolution: 60% were resolved by mutual agree-ment, and the other 40% met face to face and heard each other’s points of view; many gained new understanding and/or narrowed their issues.CDSC runs on volunteer power. Our ability to leverage significant people resources makes CDSC both a cost-effective investment and an affordable low-cost option.62 Pro Bono Mediators donated 1,089 hours.6th Annual Mimi Grosser Volunteer Recognition Award went to Barbara Beardslee, Gary Gill-Austern, and Jane Hoffmann for outstanding service.

TRAINING SERVICES: 897 people served.• 469 people participated in Conflict Skills Workshops, increasing their

confidence and competence in handling conflict.• 289 community members attended pro bono Got Conflict? Info Sessions.• 76 mediators enrolled in our Continuing Education Seminars.• 63 mediators launched, successfully completing 33-hour Mediation Training

and/or 22-hour Advanced Training in Divorce Mediation.

Got Conflict? Deal with Conflict Effectively: Tools for Your Toolbox:Customized conflict skills workshops for a diverse array of organizations and businesses:• at-risk youth, teen parents and youth advocates• elder residents in public housing and elder care professionals• staff dealing with human/civil rights issues• professional groups of human services providers • Resident Advisors (RA’s) and Student Leaders on college campuses • Human Resource teams in the workplace.

FACILITATION SERVICES:Responding to an emerging need from groups in conflict, CDSC has expanded our services to include facilitation. Since our launch two years ago, we have facilitated groups such as housing co-ops, social justice activists, and high school administration/faculty.

New initiatives:Juvenile Court in Cambridge: mediating Harassment Prevention Orders involving conflicts between teens. Thanks to leadership from the bench, Hon. Kenneth King and Hon. Gloria Tan endorse the value of mediation as an essential option for youth, providing them an alternative to a criminal record with long-lasting consequences.Prisoner Re-Entry Mediation: Inspired by a program in Maryland, CDSC’s mediators and staff are involved in a pilot project in the Pre-Release Center of the MA Dept. of Correction. Mediation is offered to prisoners at a critical point just prior to their “re-entry” back into the community.Collaboration: Youth & Police: CDSC is working together with the Cambridge Police Department to promote positive conflict engagement for youth, through training workshops and photo-voice. This 2-year grant is funded by JAMS/ACR (Association for Conflict Resolution), in close partnership with MA Office of Public Collaboration. Our initial project focused on BoysIIMen at Moses Youth Center.

Celebrating Community Peacemakers:At our annual Spirit of Mediation Bash in Fall 2017, CDSC presented Community Peacemaker Awards to: • Brian Jerome, Founder and CEO, MA Dispute Resolution Services• Thomas Smith, Founder and Executive Director, Justice at Work• City Peace, Cambridge Youth Leadership

“The mediation was a salvation for us ...We had

a great experience. …You saved my divorce!

Wish you could also have saved my marriage,

but I am glad at least you saved my divorce.”

“CDSC Mediators were very empathic — after years, my voice was finally heard.”
