A. W. Gordon. '
To ifc? Citizens of the Town of Sullivan ;I present herewith the following report of the schools
nndeT my supervision for the year ending in March, 1906.The whole number of scholars in town is three hundred
and thirty-two. The total number registered has been two- hundred and four with an average attendance of one hundred and forty-five. We have had an aggregate of two hundred and nine weeks of school, giving an average of twenty-eight and one-half weeks for e-.ch district. On account of the severe illness of the teachers of several schools the terms have not been?o f eq u a l le n g th in a ll th e districst. .
The attendance at West Sullivan and Sullivan during the winter term was much below the average on account of an epidemic of measles prevailing at that time. Otherwise than this and the illness of teachers we have had a most successful year of school, the teachers in each and every instance doing their work in an able and conscientious manner and the scholars- making very satisfactory progress in their courses of study.
The Centre school was suspended after the winter term in accordance with the School Laws of Maine, Chapter XV, Section 2, which reads as follows, “Any school failing, to maintain
-an average attendance for any school year of at least eight pupils, shall be and is hereby suspended, unless the town In

recommendation to that effect, instruct its school committee to* . . * V v -1 ’ - > 4 * V* 'maintain said school.” As there are very few scholars in this •district and these can attend the schools in th e ‘adjoining distric ts without any great inconvenience it will not be necessaryto maintain this, school at present,
, * «. . The Tunk school comes under the suspended list again
'this spring. In this case the School hoard recommends that ■the school be continued.

crayons and other supplies amount to about $50 each year,. From these facta it is evident that a substantial sum should be raised each year in order to keep our schools supplied with the necessary books, and good text books are certainly one of the first requirements of good schools.
