Can it get any better?

As the calendar year draws to a close, we are pleased to share the Garden’s once yearly accounting of accomplishments for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019. Our achievements reside not only in our extensive collections, educational initiatives, and research endeavors, but in our mission to “inspire understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants and advance a sustainable relationship between people and nature.”

From our role in saving rare plants from extinction, to our educational outreach that brings people and nature closer together, we act in every way to advance the University’s mission of teaching, research, and public service and to enhance the well-being of our broader community.

The Garden received an unprecedented outpouring of support in FY19 leading to the second-best fundraising year in the Garden’s history. This generosity allowed us to launch several new initiatives including the creation of a Native Plant Materials Development Center at Mason Farm, development of a Pollinator Toolkit for North Carolina, and installation of a piedmont habitat display in Washington D.C. at the United States Botanic Garden’s Gardens Across America exhibit.

From launching a new website (ncbg.unc.edu) to publishing an award-winning field guide for the southeast, to being recognized by Botanic Gardens Conservation

International as one of only 12 public gardens in the world accredited as an Advanced Conservation Practitioner, our list of accomplishments in FY19 was impressive. A breakdown of accomplishments by program can be found on pages 4 through 8 or, if you are a numbers person, check out the annual dashboard on the inside front cover.

I hope you enjoy reading about the achievements of our programs and staff as much as we have enjoyed bringing them to fruition. We could not do all the wonderful things we do without the generosity and support of staff, volunteers, and friends like you, and to all who have supported the Garden, we say thank you.

Can it get any better than this? You can bank on it. 2020 is The Year of the Wildflower and it is going to be epic.

Sincerely Yours,

Damon Waitt

Dear Friend of the North Carolina Botanical Garden,

Our conservation program protects and manages land, and conducts applied research in ecological restoration and germplasm storage. In addition to being a founding member of the Center for Plant Conservation and Seeds of Success Program, we are now operating our own native plant development center to provided seeds and plants for both small- and large-scale ecological restoration projects.

Rare and Endangered Plants

We store the germplasm of 90 endangered southeastern species for use in restoration and as a safeguard against extinction in the wild. This year, 65 rare plant populations were monitored, one peer-reviewed journal article was published, and seven presentations were delivered at professional conferences. We contracted with Unique Places and introduced over 500 Harperella nodosa (harperella) to the Rocky River (Chatham Co. NC) as part of the Hoosier Dam removal project, with 500 more yet to plant. Our collection of seeds for restoration in the Uwharrie National Forest with U.S. Forest Service funding continues from last year. Also continuing from last year is the collection of Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap) seeds and tissue for genetic research. Seeds will be used for targeted restoration and long-term conservation, and the tissue will be studied, with funding from the International Carnivorous Plant Society, to help determine the genetic diversity within and between flytrap populations.

Land Conservation and Management

The conservation program oversees 1,125 acres, including seven nature preserves and 23 conservation easements. We used controlled burning on five separate sections to manage 40 acres of Piedmont savanna habitat, prescribed mowing in 25 acres of wet meadows, and invasive plant species removal across hundreds of

acres at the Mason Farm Biological Reserve, Battle Park, and the Coker Pinetum. We accomplished this active management with the help of work study students, student interns, volunteers, and interagency cooperation.

The Green Growth Toolbox project, funded by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission to create a four-county conservation plan, is complete and shows the critical corridors necessary for connections between and among core conservation lands. The final project project was presented at the well-attended four-county Environmental Summit, hosted by the Garden on December 4, 2019. We celebrated the long-sought purchase and conservation of the Cochrane property. This land is now added to the adjacent Laurel Hill Nature Preserve, contiguous with the ecologically exceptional Parker Preserve and Mason Farm Biological Reserve. We have completed much of the recovery work from Hurricanes Florence and Michael at Mason Farm, and anticipate boardwalk replacement by March 2020.

Public Outreach and Professional Activities

Conservation staff gave 30 public presentations at national scientific meetings, local conservation events, public school classes, garden clubs, and others. The department also led workshops and taught classes in the NCBG Native Plant Studies certificate program through the education department by teaching Conservation Biology, Pollination Biology, Local Flora, and Invasive Plant Control.

The education department provides diverse, creative learning experiences that seek to increase environmental and conservation literacy relative to the southeastern United States, strengthen program participants’ connection to the natural world, and improve the well-being of participants, the community, and the planet.

The department supported the NCBG mission through free and fee-based public programs offered throughout the year. Youth and family programs delivered 50 curriculum-aligned school field trips for 1,521 students and ten family workshops and hikes for 132 people. The popular Nature Explorers Summer Camp served more than 94 children through seven, one-week day camp sessions. These programs provide hands-on interactions promoting the importance of nature in child development, inspiring observation, appreciation, and understanding of the natural world, and delivering excellence in natural science education.

Jump stumps, giant butterflies, and native bee houses were added to the Children’s Wonder Garden, enhancing opportunities for outdoor nature play and exploration to visiting families. In the fall of 2018, the new Peacock Discovery Room was opened to the public.

We trained 14 new Garden Guide docents and provided advanced training to all 32 Garden Guides, enhancing their content and interpretive skills to lead school field trips and guided tours.

Adult education program themes included nature studies, nature art, and home gardening. Over 3,300 adults participated in 135 public education programs including classes, workshops, hikes, tours, lectures, and special events. We offered 18 Lunchbox talks, free and open to the public, with attendance reaching a record 100 for the summer talk on fireflies. Three participants in each of our two public certificate programs, Native Plant Studies and Botanical Art & Illustration, received their certificates during a fall celebration of their mastery of subject matter and skills.

Annual Lecture Series

Our two annual lecture series, the Jenny Elder Fitch Memorial Lecture and the Evelyn McNeill Sims Native Plant Lecture, were well attended. The Fitch lecture featured NC Botanical Garden Foundation, Inc. board member, horticulturist, and author, Brie Arthur. Brie eloquently shared her signature design technique of foodscaping. The Sims lecture featured Dwayne Estes, executive director of the Southeastern Grasslands Initiative, who took the audience on a historic tour of North Carolina’s natural landscapes and shared ways we can restore these landscapes that form important components of North Carolina’s natural and cultural heritage.

Outreach Programs

Our outreach programs supported food access and food systems education efforts on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and improved the well-being of off-campus constituents through therapeutic engagement with plants.

With the contribution by more than 425 students and community members of over 2,000 hours of volunteer support, Carolina Campus Community Garden (CCCG) distributed over 5,700 pounds of organic vegetables to UNC’s housekeeping staff. A partnership with Orange County Cooperative Extension was expanded to include periodic delivery of cooking demonstrations in conjunction with the garden’s food distributions. With the volunteer support of 45 UNC staff volunteers, 250 tomato seedlings were transplanted and distributed to housekeeping, grounds, and parking staff. CCCG also partnered with seven UNC classes and five Greek organizations.

Edible Campus UNC promoted interactive food education across the University landscape by creating vibrant public spaces engaging over 1,300 UNC-CH students in more than 1,600 hours of garden programming. The program partnered with over 25 academic classes and student organizations. There is growing interest from campus centers and departments to start new “satellite” edible or pollinator gardens on campus.

With the assistance of a UNC School of Education undergraduate intern, the Horticultural Therapy program provided 176 direct service sessions. Sixteen allied health professionals completed 70 hours of face-to-face education in the Certificate in Therapeutic Horticulture program and started their internships.

Wonder Connection provided 354 educational programs serving 368 chronically-ill children at UNC Children’s Hospital and offered seven outpatient events for 93 children and family members at the Ronald McDonald House. In March, after years of germination here at the Garden, Wonder Connection transitioned to a new sponsor in California, providing a new foundation from which to set seeds nationally and beyond in the future.

Annual Report FY 20196

The UNC Herbarium is the largest collection of plant specimens in the Southeast with over 800,000 specimens dating from the mid-1800s, housed in Coker Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Herbarium documents plants in the state’s 100 counties and across the southeastern United States, serving as the definitive resource for their identification and geographic distribution. The Herbarium strives to increase botanical capacity by bringing botanical knowledge and skills to people at all levels of experience.

The Herbarium accessioned 16,826 new specimens into the collection this year, over twice as many as the previous year. We also loaned out 3,060 specimens to researchers and herbaria around the world, nearly 1,000 more specimens than last year.

The Herbarium is working on several multi-year projects made possible through support from private donors and government grants. These projects include: • Taxonomic work and description of new and rare

species in North Carolina and the vicinity• Seed resources to support restoration of imperiled

savanna, woodland, and grassland ecosystems of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain

• Floras for states (Arkansas, Tennessee, Delaware) and National Parks

• National Park Service data management • Internships and field-based research on plants of the

Southeast• Accession, organization, and digitization of the plant

fossil component of the Herbarium. In addition, Herbarium staff and associates have published about 20 scientific papers, including descriptions of two new species that immediately are of high conservation concern: Physalis macrosperma and Trichostema nesophilium.

The Herbarium was also an integral part of creating the Wildflowers of the Atlantic Southeast field guide published by Timber Press in June 2019. This handy, illustrated guide uses a simple key system to guide users to the identification of over 1,200 species of wildflowers found in the Atlantic Southeast.

NORTH CAROLINA BOTANICAL GARDEN 7

The Garden’s horticulture department is a leading source of information and expertise on the plants of North Carolina and the southeastern United States. This department is responsible for the management and care of 10 acres of thematic gardens at 100 Old Mason Farm Road which include a variety of habitat collections, ornamental displays of native species, an herb garden and plant families garden. The horticulture department also manages five acres at the Coker Arboretum, a more than 100-year-old collection of southeastern trees and their Asian relatives, located in the center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

Staffing

Fiscal Year 2019 began with some reorganization within the department resulting in two new full-time positions: a nursery assistant and a seed program coordinator / collections manager. The nursery assistant has brought much greater continuity to our greenhouse and nursery operations, including a more sustainable model for weekend coverage. The other position represents a renewed commitment to collections management that is already bearing fruit in the form of consistent and current plant labels throughout the gardens, a completed inventory of the trees at the Coker Arboretum, and digitization a 10-year backlog of plant records. Much of this progress has been made possible by changes we made to the member’s seed benefit program, enabling us to fulfill requests much more quickly and efficiently.

Projects

In the past year, we completed an overhaul of the fern collection by the Paul Green Cabin and restoration of the taxonomic order to the beds in the Plant Families Garden, making both collections more legible and

meaningful to the visitor. We made a lot of progress cleaning up vegetation along the Garden’s perimeter, including along the deer fence and sound wall enabling us to perform routine maintenance more easily. We also removed several hazard trees that had succumbed to various pests and diseases, including three massive trees at the Coker Arboretum that had to be extracted in large sections by a 200-ton crane!

We also had an opportunity to take our show on the road by participating in a Gardens Across America exhibit hosted by the United States Botanic Garden next to the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Several staff from the horticulture department (accompanied by volunteer Jim Fickle) drove up in box truck filled with lumber, plants, dried perennial stems for wattle fencing, and vintage farm implements to create a 365 square foot vignette of the North Carolina Botanical Garden. We used a wide variety of piedmont natives to demonstrate how to garden with local plants in a way that nurtures biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife throughout the year. Presentations

The horticulture department has continued to support the Garden’s educational mission by giving talks and teaching classes about plant propagation and gardening with native plants. Two members of our staff gave presentations on gardening for wildlife and our Wildflower of the Year program at the American Public Gardens Association’s annual conference, while another staff member chaired the annual meeting of the Association’s Native Plant Community.

HorticultureHIGHLIGHTS

Hoticulture staff put the finishing touches on our display bed at the United States Botanic Garden in May.

Annual Report FY 20198

DevelopmentThe Garden had a successful fundraising year in FY19, with the retention of membership, accomplishment of the overall fundraising goal, and increases in permanent endowments that will help provide support in future years. In FY19, the Garden received $586,091 (97.6 percent of the $600,000 goal) in unrestricted, general operation gifts, including North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation dues, contributions to the Director’s Fund, event sponsorships, and unrestricted memorial gifts and tributes.

The Garden received $1,957,154, or 150 percent, of the $1.3 million goal in private contributions to all Garden designations.

Planned gifts continue to be a significant source of support. The Garden received distributions from four planned gifts from individuals and families who included the North Carolina Botanical Garden in their will or other estate plans. From these legacy gifts, the Garden was honored to receive $103,943 for general support.

Fundraising

Revenue and commitments, including formal pledges and documented planned gifts, totaled $3,720,593 this year. With $20,306,002 in gifts and commitments recorded from January 1, 2015 through June 30, 2019, the Garden is 67 percent of the way to its $30 million goal for the eight-year UNC capital campaign.

Membership

Garden membership was sustained at the previous year’s level in FY19. Membership appeals, acquisition mailings, improvements in our renewal reminder system, and stewardship focused on donor retention helped the Garden’s membership roster continue at 3,628, essentially unchanged from the previous fiscal year. Membership dues provide more than $150,000 for general support and are tremendously helpful in meeting the Garden’s needs. The Garden continues to find ways to build a base of engaged members who are committed to our work and mission. Healthy membership growth is the best way to ensure future financial support and the continued progress of the North Carolina Botanical Garden.

Endowments

Additions to permanent endowments for specific areas of the Garden totaled $101,175 in FY19. These additions, plus growth of invested assets, brought the total market value of permanent endowments and other large invested funds to $4.9 million and is expected to generate approximately $235,000 next year. These permanent sources of income are critical for ongoing care of campus treasures like Coker Arboretum, Battle Park, and Mason Farm Biological Reserve. Because state allocations provide approximately 37 percent of the Garden’s budget, and because fundraising can vary with the economic climate, having permanent sources of recurring annual income is vital to the Garden’s future.
