Dear NYCPS Member,
The end of 2017 brought with it my five year anniversary working at the New York County Psychiatric
Society. In that time, I have witnessed a lot of growth and change and I am pleased that 2017
continued that trend for NYCPS. It is my honor to once again present to you our Annual Report, which
highlights many of the successful programs and events NYCPS held over the course of the year.
One of the biggest changes at NYCPS over the past five years has been the growth of our Committees,
with long standing Committees taking on new members to host popular events and newly founded
Committees creating important initiatives to benefit our NYC community. Our Forensics Committee
hosted their successful inaugural event in 2017, while simultaneously working on building partnerships
with other groups and drafting letters to influence policy changes. Our Early Career Psychiatrists
Committee co-hosted their most successful social event to date joining with NYCCAP to bring over 60
ECPs together for an evening of networking and socializing. 2017 also saw the re-imagination of our
Psychiatrists for Community Empowerment Committee (P4CE), which dedicated itself to raising money
and collecting supplies and medication to help psychiatric colleagues in Puerto Rico, an initiative that
involved the entire Society and one for which our membership can surely be proud.
In addition to these and other committee events, NYCPS continued to offer a number of annual events.
Our mainstays, the Meet & Greet, Legislative Breakfast, and Annual Meeting, remained popular while
we brought back other celebrated events as regular additions to our yearly calendar. Our Residents’
Committee held their 2nd Annual Fellowship Night bringing together representatives from programs
across NYC as well as their 2nd Annual Holiday Party and 3rd Annual Bowling Night giving the entire
membership more unique opportunities to network and have fun with colleagues. All of the hard work
of our leadership, committees, and staff was rewarded in May of 2017 with the presentation to NYCPS
of the APA Assembly’s 2017 District Branch Best Practice Award. You can read more about some of our
events and annual offerings in this 2017 Annual Report.
Our increased programming would not be possible without the steady commitment of our leadership
and staff to a clear and transparent budgeting process. It would also not be possible without their
vision of dedicating funds saved from the 2015 budget towards the development of NYCPS initiatives
and events. I am happy to report our increased activity has come without an increase in membership
dues! You can view more details in our Financial Outlook (page 13).
I look forward to the continued growth of the Society and I encourage you all to consider becoming
more involved, joining a Committee, running for NYCPS office, or attending even more NYCPS events.
We welcome your feedback and input on how we can best serve you and we are always ready to help
you get even more out of your membership!
Sincerely, Meagan O’Toole, J.D. Executive Director

2017 Committee Highlights:
Forensic Committee
The Forensic Committee held its first event in 2017, a panel event entitled; What’s Hot in NYC
Forensics? Given the increase of people with mental illness within the criminal justice system, NYC has
become one of the front runners in developing innovative public programs and services to help this
underserved population. The panel of six showcased leaders from a variety of forensic psychiatry
services available in NYC, including jail treatment, juvenile detention, court evaluations, diversion
services, and forensic ACT. They discussed developments in the field, their jobs, and career paths. The
event was very successful, with over 40 members in attendance.

Psychiatrists for Community Empowerment (P4CE) Committee
Following the devastating hurricanes that
affected so many in the southern states and
Caribbean in 2017, NYCPS, and its
Psychiatrists for Community Empowerment
(P4CE) Committee, spearheaded a few
initiatives to help our colleagues in Puerto
Rico and raise funds for general Disaster
Relief. The initiatives included arranging for
the collection and shipment of much-needed
supplies to the Department of Psychiatry at
the University of Puerto Rico’s School of
Medicine, partnering with the APA
Foundation to raise money for its Disaster
Relief Fund (which included adding a fundraising component to our annual Bowling Night), and
member contributions to a P4CE member’s WishList for a medical mission trip to Puerto Rico.
United Nations Committee On June 15th, 2017, under the leadership of Dr. Vivian Pender, the UN Committee organized a panel to
present, Integrated Care for Individuals with Mental Disabilities, at the United Nations. The
presentation was a side-event of the 10th Conference of States Parties of the 61st session of the
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The Committee also held their annual
Movie Night on December 6th at the Thalia Theater. The film, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,
was shown and speaker, Daniel Shepard from the UN Department of Public Information, UN
Environment Programme, spoke about the film and answered questions from attendees.

PROGRAMS & GRANTS
A few years ago, the Executive Council made a conscious effort to direct more funding toward
programing each year. As a result, NYCPS has been able to offer a steady increase in both quality and
quantity of events and programs, to the direct benefit of members. The chart below shows our
increase in program expenses over the past five years despite no increase in dues.

NYCPS Website
NYCPS launched our new website, www.nycpsych.org in 2016, and we have continued to expand the
information available based on our members’ needs. The website allows members to view the
organization’s calendar, register for events, get important news and updates, find out about grant and
award opportunities, read and place classified ads, and learn more about what NYCPS membership has
to offer.
E-News Blasts & Social Media
Our monthly E-News blasts contain timely news, event information and registration links, updates, and
classified ads. We highlight the NYCPS calendar of events and include a section on upcoming deadlines
for APA/general psychiatry awards, grants, etc. In addition, we feature the top news stories related to
psychiatry from important media outlets. We have also added a dedicated block, “Member Benefit of
the Month,” that highlights an APA benefit.
In addition to our E-News blasts and website, NYCPS has a Facebook page and Twitter account. Our
Facebook page, www.facebook.com/NYCDB, has nearly 200 likes and followers, while our Twitter
account, @psychiatryNYC, has over 600 followers!
Fellowship Night
Spearheaded by our Residents’ Committee, which is composed of representatives from each of the 10
different programs within our jurisdiction, Fellowship Night continues to grow. In 2017, the night
brought together 27 fellowship programs in the NYC area, including those with fellowships in
Consultation/Liaison, Addiction, Child & Adolescent, Geriatric, Forensic, Integrated Care, and Public
Psychiatry. The event is set up as an informal fair where residents can peruse various tables and learn
more about specific fellowship opportunities as well as the benefits of fellowship in general. In 2018,
the residents plan to add employers to the event, expanding its usefulness to members beyond those
interested in fellowships.
Minority Mentorship Network (MMN) Program
In 2017, the Network hosted two events. The spring event, was a CV 101 & Mentorship Night on March
30th as part of an APA Innovative Grant awarded to NYCPS in 2016. For the first half of the event,
Marguerite Salen from Columbia shared CV tips and tricks. For the second half of the event, residents
and ECPs met one-on-one with experienced psychiatrists who offered career advice after being
matched by staff. This event was available exclusively to our NYCPS members as a brand new member
benefit. The fall event on Global Psychiatry was co-hosted by the Black Psychiatrists Group of New
York. A panel of speakers discussed their experiences working internationally. This event brought out
over 30 attendees, including residents from across NYC. A number of the panelists also emphasized
10
that they had found their first jobs from APA
connections and through activities organized
by NYCPS Committees.
NYCPS members started the Minority
Mentorship Network in 2013 to promote and
support residents and early career psychiatrists
of underrepresented groups by offering them
more opportunities for mentorship. NYCPS
continues to work with a group of residents to
strengthen our Minority Mentorship Network,
which connects MURs, RFMs, and ECPs with
established psychiatrists to foster mentoring
relationships.

Research Grants for Medical Students
In 2015, the NYCPS Research Committee piloted a program to award grant funding to medical students
who submit research proposals. The purpose of these grants is to cover gaps of $1000-$2,000 in
funding for medical students’ psychiatry-related research. This grant makes NYCPS and APA a resource
early in the careers of soon-to-be psychiatrists and strengthens our relationship with potential
members. In 2017, we awarded grants to two medical students in the NYC area, and we continue to
take applications for grants on a rolling basis throughout the year. We expect to expand the program
to include Resident-Fellow Members in 2018.

ANNUAL EVENTS
Legislative Breakfast On January 29, 2017, the New York County Psychiatric Society, the New York County Medical Society
and the New York Council on Child & Adolescent Psychiatry held its third joint Legislative Breakfast at
the New York Academy of Medicine. The Legislative Breakfast is an annual event that brings together
members with elected representatives, directors of state and city agencies, and academic leaders to
discuss important issues affecting the field of psychiatry. Topics of discussion included upcoming
structural changes in the healthcare delivery system, narrowing insurance networks and hospital
mergers, and the opioid crisis. Legislators in attendance included NY Senator Bill Perkins,
Assemblymember Richard Gottfried, and Aides from Assemblymembers Rebecca Seawright’s and
Daniel O’Donnell’s offices.

NYCPS Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner Each year the Society holds an Annual Meeting for members and their guests that includes a formal
dinner and presentations by experts on important and relevant topics in the field of psychiatry. The
2017 Annual Meeting was held at the New York Academy of Medicine and featured the keynote
presentation: The Mind and its Epigenome, Implications for the Neurobiology of Psychiatric Disease
given by Schahram Akbarian, MD, PhD.
The NYCPS Resident Research Awards ceremony is a regular program feature at the Annual Meeting.
The presentation recognizes all resident members who submitted abstracts, and awards the top three
placements with honoraria and plaques. 2017 winners included Dr. George Chahine (1st place), Dr. Lan
Chi Vo (2nd place), and Dr. Nwayieze Ndukwe (3rd place).

The Ivan Goldberg Outstanding Service Award commemorates the unique and novel contributions
made by the late Dr. Goldberg to the field of psychiatry. Each year, the Ivan Goldberg Award
Committee solicits nominations from psychiatrist members who demonstrate the pioneering spirit of
Dr. Goldberg’s work; to make psychiatric knowledge accessible to all. The winner is announced and
presented with an award at the Annual Meeting. The 2017 Ivan Goldberg Award recipient was Dr.
Harvey White.
Meet & Greet Held at the 79th Street Boat Basin, the New
York County Psychiatric Society’s Annual Meet
& Greet is a social event that gives members a
chance to meet the Executive Council as well
as committee chairs, to network and socialize
with each other, and to discuss ideas with
fellow psychiatrists in an enjoyable and casual
setting. The event is among the most popular
events the Society hosts and the 2017 Meet &
Greet had the highest attendance to date!
Members had fun engaging in a friendly
competition and raffle to win prizes such as an
iPad mini, a Freudian Gift Basket (provided by Platinum Partner, PRMS), and gift cards to popular
retailers.
