Coastal Watch – Gavin O’Callaghan queried if we are approaching Coastal Watch for more sponsorship due to their new “Plus” facility. Future of Clubrooms – Andrew O’Callaghan requested an update, we are currently looking at different options in regards to designs and will be obtaining cost estimates in the coming months.
Bar Opening – John Brown queried if the bar will be open after patrols. This depends if we have someone take on the role as bar manager to organise this.

President’s Report -‐ Aaron LewisThe first thing is a bit of nepotism, a big thank you to Lindy Lewis for all her hard work this year taking on even more roles to help keep the club running. Please help out Lindy and your club by standing up and helping out before we burn Lindy out (Happy Wife, Happy Life!).The president’s award this year has gone to Amanda Dean who has stepped up in many areas, picking up the nipper BBQ & fruit supplies for each session, working behind the bar, opening the club for gear inspection, assisting with nippers, helping in the kitchen and now the proud holder of a Bronze Medallion, she also updated her senior first aid qualification and gained the Spinal Management award this season. Keep up the good work Amanda, thanks for your help!We made one big purchase this year, a new IRB with motor at a reduced cost of $14,817, saving the Club around $4000. It was used at Rescue 2012 (World Lifesaving Titles) that were held in Adelaide in November for approximately 10 hours. This was a great opportunity to purchase a virtually new Duck & motor at a lower cost to assist in keeping our rescue equipment modern, allowing our oldest duck to retire after more than 14 years service. Thank you to Kieran Shine for coming on board as a sponsor of the IRB with his business KGM Design & Build. The South Coast Working Group was formed, with a representative from Chiton, Port Elliot & Goolwa meeting with Council to discuss surf lifesaving requirements on the South Coast in regards to building redevelopment and other issues to keep things moving in the right direction. There will be a lot of work required to get new clubrooms off the ground and even more work involved with new clubrooms and increased running costs.

Secretary’s Report -‐ Lindy LewisThanks again to those who have put their hand up for a role this season and assisted with a smoothly run season. Of course the more the merrier! We really do need more people committing a role and spreading the load so we don’t have one person trying to perform multiple roles and burning out. There are many small roles and everyone on the Board is more than happy to assist you.
Working Bee -‐ Saturday 13th October 2012A fantastic turn out saw many jobs completed including fencing the gap along the railway to make it safer, repairing the ceiling/cornice in the bunkhouse, tiling the downstairs toilet wall, oiling of woodwork, gardening, painting and other general cleaning/tidying. Thanks to all who assisted.
Merchandise UpdateWe took orders for our new wetsuit tops & shorts from Toastees Wetsuits which were quite popular and decided to make these an order only item to ensure we are not adding to our stock pile. The good thing is we can order as many or few at a time. The only additional merchandise stock were men’s bather and a new style women’s two piece bathers.
Website UpdateGarry Brown has been working hard on a new and improved website that is now live so please check it out and feedback is appreciated, www.chitonrocks.com
Coastal Garden SchemeA native garden was planted around the club and outside the car park thanks to the Department of Environment, Water & Natural Resources. Not all of it survived our harsh conditions and they have done some re-‐planting and weed killing to help it along.
Members Day/Night -‐ Saturday 27th April 2013Although quite late in the season, the weather conditions were great, starting with the Club Champs, Teams Challenge, followed by Curry for tea from our friends at Hurry Curry. Patrol member’s draw saw Troy Rickard winning first prize ($100 club merchandise voucher) and Andrew Hall 2nd prize ($25 Hotel Victor voucher). Thanks to Port Elliot SLSC for providing bar staff on the night so our members could all enjoy themselves. Of course the highlight was The Deer Johns performing for us. Here are some snaps from the day & night...

Club Captain’s Report -‐ Aaron LindsayAnother season is behind us as we longingly look towards the warmth of summer to draw us all back to our favourite beach. Reflecting on the season past showed that the club is still an important part of our community and that we do provide a significant service to the public.
Looking back on the patrol season shows what a great group of volunteer members we have at our club. With the majority of patrolling days either fine or overcast weather, we were treated to decent days down at the beach. Total numbers on patrol this season were 55 members with the average amount of hours patrolled at 24.5. The season saw a total of three rescues, one using a rescue board, one using a rescue tube and one without any equipment. We also had a total of eight first aid cases. Thank you to those members involved for their efforts. The number of rescues at our club is typically low in number, however if we are performing our duties correctly the prevention statistics should always be of a much higher value. Preventions during the season came in at 746. Remember to always record your preventions on the patrol logs, as these are the types of records State Centre needs to keep the money flowing back to our club. The total patronage to Chiton Rocks beach during the season was 4158, which is down from 4469 from the previous season.
Surf Com (Radio Room duty) was once again on the cards and it was Blue Patrol’s turn to have a go at Surf Com for the day. The day was split up into two shifts. Apart from it being a blustery day and the morning shift having to coordinate a search from police for two young kids on Lake Alexandrina, it was a generally uneventful day and a good experience for those who volunteered their time to work the radios (The young kids eventually made it all the way across the lake on a blow up raft, it was that windy!). A big thanks to goes to Frosty, Ben Pitt and Jono Chinner who had the morning shift and Frank Lindsay and myself who tackled the afternoon shift. The approaching season will see Chiton be rostered onto Surf Com again so be prepared if your patrol group gets the job!
Water Cover was again required and this year we had a few other members helping out with the duty. Thanks goes to Bazz Paynter, Trevor Ferguson, Simon Green, Garry Brown, the Learey family and Lindy Lewis for putting their hands up to provide this important service during carnivals. Well done guys. As this was a big effort in getting volunteers to do this water cover, there may be a need to roster members with their IRB Crew and Drivers onto these carnivals when the club is rostered for a carnival.
On the competition front there was a lot on this year with the World Life Saving Championships, better known as Rescue 2012 being held in Adelaide from 7-‐18 November 2012. The club had 3 individual members enter with Azz and Dan Learey and Ben Lewis donning the Chiton cap. On the team side of things the Chiton Rocks Boat Crews competed with a reserve crew and a masters crew having a go. These teams consisted of Leo O’Callaghan, Trevor Ferguson, Graeme Lee, Troy Rickard, Andron Abdul, Simon Green and Scott Allison. From all reports everyone did the club proud, especially Dan Learey who made it through several stages of the competition in the sprints, Well done!
Other competitions throughout the year were competed by the Boat Crews consisting of the rowers mentioned above in addition to Tibor Szonoki and myself. The crews competed in the Navy Series, had an enjoyable road trip to compete at Robe (in decent surf), came close to going back to back Masters Champs medals only to finish 4th and also competing very competitively in the State Championships, winning one of their heats. Great job everyone. I’m sure Tibor, the Boat Captain, will flesh out the details in more colourful detail. I encourage everyone who is thinking of competing to give it a go as it is a lot of fun and you never know how well you could do.
Club Championships and Team’s Challenge were again held on the same day for this season and this year it was actually held after the official patrolling season had been completed. This was due to timing issues with State and Masters Championships being held around the same time. Next year our Club Championships might be held earlier in the season to avoid these clashes in regards to timing, Regardless of the date it was held, we had a great turn out to both events with the day giving us a nice clean offshore wind with swell around the 4 ft. mark it was destined to be a perfect day.

My thanks go out to the volunteer patrol members who gave up their time to patrol the beach over the season. I’ve said it many times in person during the year, but you are the important people that keep this club performing it’s primary function. Patrolling is the main reason this club is around and I’d like to acknowledge this fact for everyone who has patrolled, whether 1 hour or 100 hours during the season. So to you, the lifesavers, first aiders and other volunteers, thanks and I hope to see you down at Chiton Rocks SLSC again next season.

Chief Instructor’s Report -‐ Leo O’CallaghanWhere did the season go, it just seemed to fly by, but once again it was a season where our members can be proud as they achieved and number of awards. They ranged from Bronze Medallion, SRC. IRB Silver Medallion (Driver), IRB Crew, First Aid, ARTC, Spinal Management to ATV operators...a busy year. Congratulations guys and it was great to see that true Chiton spirit come through as there were a number of our members that took up the challenge and through a lot of hard work, determination and team work, they achieved their goals. It was great to see the range of candidates, they came from our Surf Life Saving Certificate holders, Nipper Parents and new members. What’s more a number of you took on a number of awards and it was encouraging to see the way they supported each other, a great effort guys. I also need to say thank you to the guys at Port Elliott and Henley for supporting to our members in achieving their awards.
Chiton is a small club made up of dedicated members, but it faces the challenge of having enough qualified patrolling members, therefore I can only encourage all of our members and anyone who is interested to put their hand up and have a go at achieving an award. That way we will have enough qualified members to patrol our beach. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to get involved in training, may be become a qualified trainer. So please keep an eye on our website for information on upcoming training courses.
Congratulations go to the following members who achieved awards...

Nipper Report -‐ Lindy LewisSeason Summary:•62 nippers registered for our 8th season •8 sessions plus camp at the club •4 nipper parents gained their bronze •6 new Resus awards gained •11 nippers attended every session •Our first nipper that started as an U7 gained his SRC •9 carnival competitors, 3 at state titlesThe first session again began at the SA Aquatic Centre at Marion to enable our preliminary swims and floats to be assessed. Such a great facility, although hopefully we will have a new pool near us soon!
Themed dinners were again organised after most nipper sessions including a Schnitzel Night, Chicken & Chips, Pizza, Pasta and a Gourmet BBQ.
The club camp was very well attended and involved many team activities, cooking and cleaning up after themselves, everyone was assessed for their Resuscitation Certificate and finished off with a surf training/free session in the morning.
We again participated in the Victor Harbor and Goolwa Christmas Pageants which is great fun for everyone who participates as well as great publicity for the club.
Our final nippers session was followed by 4 hours of climbing the popular 10m rock wall, Wobbles the Clown was also included in the festivities this season, plenty of party food for all, followed by presentations and then finally one of our U8 nippers put on a DJ show, thanks DJ El!
Our first nipper to start as an U7 and continue right through to U14 has gained his Surf Rescue Certificate, well done Harry Conlon. We hope this is the start of many more to come.
Our State Junior Lifesavers of the Year were Lauren Shallow & Edward Jackson, who both attended all but one nipper session, show great surf skills, enthusiasm and leadership.
Carnival participation was brief this season due to a number of factors. We started off well with a massive group of 9 nippers at the local Port Elliot carnival in December. The next carnival attended by Chiton nippers was the State Titles Qualifying and then State Titles with just LeonPhillips, Luka Phillips & Alex Shierlaw participating.
We had some awesome new age group leader tops printed for next season that were presented to our age group leaders at the end of season presentations. Junior Development Camp ReportsThomas Phillips
We went to Victor for the State Surf lifesaving camp at Encounter bay . There were 2 of us from Chiton Rocks. The first day we arrived we set up the dorm and met who was in my dorm with me. There were 10 kids and 1 leader. I met people from Grange, Whyalla and Semaphore. Once we had done that we had lunch and then we went on the amazing race around Victor. We had to find check points and information by following the directions given to us. My team came second, and we had to eat a cream pie as the last thing… it was really only 3 marshmallows and whipped cream on top. After dinner we had fun doing Skits and our theme was the biggest loser, I was Chris. It was really fun.
After breakfast on Thursday I had to call my mum as my braces had broken off my tooth the previous night. But it was ok as I got to stay at camp.
We hopped on a bus and went to Pt Elliot SLSC and learnt to surf, I even managed to stand up and catch a wave for a second. We spent some time boogie boarding but it was so different to doing it at Chiton, as the waves and rips were smaller.
After dinner on Thursday we went to the pool and did rope with each other and Manikin rescues. Doing the rope rescue was good as we had never done this before at nippers.
Friday was our last day at camp we played footy on the oval and walked around the Bluff. It was great to meet new friends and learn new things, it was a really fun and exciting way to spend time in school holidays.

On the 24th of April I went on a junior surf lifesaving development camp. At camp when I got there I knew 4 people from last year there names were Kiara, Sydney, Megan and Paige. When we got there we got told what dorm we were in I got put in dorm 3. We went to the activities room and got told where everything was. They then told us to go to the dining room and have some morning tea. After morning tea we went to the activities room and got split into U11’S/U12’S and U13’S/U14’S. The U11’S/U12’S went to try on a t-‐shirt for the camp. After that we got spilt into 5 groups called Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India and Juliet. I got put in Foxtrot. After we got ready for the amazing race around Victor Harbour. When we were doing the Amazing Race we missed a checkpoint and lost 2 sheets of paper in the water on the way to Granite Island and on the way back but we weren’t the only group who dropped stuff in the water. We came second overall for the Amazing Race when we got back we had to perform a skit we did Biggest Loser. I was Michelle. For Lunch we had Sausages with bread and for Dinner we had Chicken Schnitzel and also for Desert we had Ice-‐Cream with Chocolate Cake. We then went to bed at 10:00pm.
On the 25th of April we went surfing and body-‐boarding down at port Elliot. We also went to the pool at Victor Harbour we did Rope Pulling, Manikin Rescuing and Duck diving for a brick. We also went for a walk around Port Elliot we went to seal rock and got wet. For Breakfast we had Toast and Juice for Lunch we had Wraps and For Dinner we had Spaghetti and also for Desert we had Triffle. Before we went to bed we had a look at some pictures of us while we were surfing we also did some brain teasers. We went to bed at 10:00pm.
On the 26th of April we went for a walk to the bluff. We had to walk to the bluff but took a bus back. The bluff was very hard as we had to climb lots of stairs but it was fun when we got up to the top of the bluff we could see the whole of Victor Harbour it was an Amazing sight. We had a picture up on the bluff. I met lots of new friends form different clubs. If you are looking for something to do in the Holidays and you want to improve your surf lifesaving skills then I suggest you go to this amazing camp. If I was you I would go. I’m definitely looking forward to going next year.

Youth Development Camp Reportsby Jennie & Ross Paynter
Jack & Ross Paynter attended the SLSSA Youth Development for 4 days on the 2nd week of the July 2012 school holidays. They returned on the Friday night singing strange songs, talking about places like they were people (Whyalla said and Whyalla did) and wearing new SLSSA jackets that had been given to each of the attendees. On the drive home I heard about the beautiful scenery, their experiences of cooking meals for a group, an entertaining and hilarious talent night, sitting around the camp fire in the evening sharing stories, playing guitars, singing songs and how they entertained themselves travelling for hours on the bus. Since then Facebook has been busy with chats and plans for catching up and exchanging photos. Below are the boys reports:
Jennie talking to Ross – So where exactly did you go? -‐ We went to Edeowie Station in the Flinders Ranges. We stayed in the shearer’s quarters that were set up as boys and girls dorms and there was a long verandah across the front that we watched a big storm from.
What did you do? -‐ There was a range of activities we did, such as climbing Mt Oshllen Baggae, walks to the old Edeowie Hotel, cooking, drawing and a few other things such as treasure hunts. I played guitar during the talent night and was inspired by James (one of the leaders) with his guitar playing and singing.
What did you think was the best thing about the camp? -‐ Everything was quite enjoyable but the best thing was meeting new people from other clubs including the leaders of the camp. In total I met 17 new people from a variety of different clubs and meeting them is what made this camp so special. Even though it is possible to meet people at carnivals, not everyone goes to carnivals and I imagine that would be a competitive atmosphere and we wouldn’t have gotten to know each other as well. So camps like this are really good for every age group as they can make friendships between clubs that are really amazing.
Youth Development Camp 2012, By Jack Paynter
After getting up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday, we were at Life Saving HQ by 8:30. With 2 guitars, 16 sets of luggage, people and 50,000 Shapes biscuits loaded, the bus rolled off and our journey began. The ice was smashed with the help of our excellent leaders Steve, Bianca, Nicky and James. In Port Augusta the Whyalla kids joined our ranks. Continuing our journey, through some outstanding scenery, we arrived at Edeowie station, Flinders Ranges. On the second day we climbed Mt Everest. Only joking, we climbed Mt Ohlssen-‐Bagge. The hike was great and the views were amazing.
However, some people forgot that there was no race down the mountain and no extra points were given for running down a near vertical rock face. Later that night a lightning storm hit. It was absolutely amazing to watch the whole sky light up as lightning flashed across the horizon.
Day three was supposed to be a hike to Edeowie Gorge, but the storm had made the track inaccessible. However, our time was occupied with team building activities. We did have fun on a smaller walk to the old Edeowie Hotel. The fun mainly caused by the constant slipping and sliding across what had become very muddy ground.
That night we were divided into three groups and tasked with performing a small act of entertainment. Edeowie’s Got Talent gave us entertaining comedic sketches, an amusing news report and a musical game show, led by Ross on guitar.
The journey home was all day 4 consisted of. The sleepy trip was largely uneventful, excluding Will bringing up his lunch.
In general I’ll remember this camp for the fantastic people, James’s guitar, the group singing, epic I spy games, relaxing around the campfire and the great surroundings.

Boat Captain’s Report -‐ Tibor SzolnokiHello again fellow Chitonites, its time for yet another Boat Captains report for the year (how time flys when you are having fun). We have had a good long year on the water with abundant competition, with the World Masters Games, Robe as well as the Senior and Masters state titles. Also we had two crews competing , the “A” crew was Andron Abdul, Simon Green, Scott Allison, Aaron Lindsay and their sweep Troy Rickard also the Masters crew of Trevor Ferguson, Tim Parry, Leo O’Callaghan, Graham Lee and by far the best sweep in the club Moi (the club does not endorse or take responsibility for this comment or does the crew), both crews in the Worlds did ok, as the competition was at a very high standard, as one would expect.
The Masters went on to Robe and experienced some big surf, first race we got out and back ok, in the second race we got smashed going out and rolled on the way, if it wasn’t for my great calls as a sweep I’m sure we would have not survived. Then to the customary refreshments back at the shack which Jungle hired.
We had a good outcome in the State Masters with the “A” crew unluckily finishing fourth in the 140’s and my crew finishing fifth in the 160’s. Senior states was an interesting carnival with Scott having to pull out of the states, but Troy put up his hand to row and Trevor had to sweep. They preformed very well by winning the third round but unfortunately missing out in the semi finals of the Reserve grade. With Trevor sweeping the other crew, it left the Masters having to row A grade, full credit we rowed well only to be outdone by a lot better crews, could be a first with Chiton fielding an A and B crew.
The club also purchased a second hand boat and trailer from North Narrabeen, which hundreds of man hours was put in by Trevor, Andron, Simon and rest of the crews, saving the club thousands of dollars and making the hull like brand new, with the new oars and sweep oar makes this a competitive boat that I’m sure will win races and medals next year, while still keeping the budget for the boat area low.
To finish off I would like to thank Nick and all the members of the North Narrabeen SLSC for making our stay at the North Narrabeen to pick up the boat most enjoyable, our sponsors S-‐One Innovations Builders and Developers, all the Lindsay family, Greg Daw of the Glenelg SLSC, the committee and every one else who helped, gave advice, or supported the boat area. Also congratulations to Jimmy Miller life member of Chiton that the new boat will be named after, if we put in the time and effort like you did, surely we will be champions next year.
PS if you want to row give us a call.
Here’s looking at you kid, Live long and prosper.

Bar Manager Report -‐ Lindy LewisUnfortunately no-‐one was willing to put their hand up for this role, so instead of shutting the bar altogether until someone was willing, Aaron & I did the best we could to keep it running. We started with a full clean up behind the bar and edited the till sheet to make it simple and user friendly. From there we basically just checked the stock levels every time we were at the club and obtained more when needed. Thanks to all those who volunteered behind the bar during the season, most find it quite enjoyable and all you need to do is attend an evening RSA Course (Responsible Service of Alcohol) to be qualified. Of course you cannot drink alcohol or be under the influence while serving behind the bar, but we have enough people qualified that we should all only need to do it 2 or 3 times during the season. We have started to accept more function bookings that has helped to increase our bar profits, including a farewell function for an employee of Southern Fleurieu Health Services, a large wedding ($5000 bar tab) and a CD launch for local band “Littlefish”.Bar sales this year was the highest income stream for the club, and that was with Aaron & myself doing the job “on the side” so I would think there is room for improvement if someone takes on the role as their sole duty.We have reached the third and final level of the Good Sports Program that involved the implementation of an Alcohol Management Policy that is on display at the club and on our Website. We are committed to providing a safe licenced venue that does not promote excessive consumption of alcohol, all servers behind the bar are RSA trained and we have food and non-‐alcoholic drinks available for purchase.New liquor licencing legislation meant that we also had to create a Risk Assessment and Alcohol Management Plan that Jennie Paynter kindly drafted for us. This along with other important documents including incident register, copy of our licence, barring order forms, training record etc. are kept behind the bar in a Liquor Compliance folder kindly provided by Clubs SA.We re-‐signed with Lion Nathan for a further 3 years, providing $500 worth of stock per year. As part of this sponsorship we are required to only stock Lion Nathan brand beer & cider with the exception of Cooper Pale Ale.There are a mountain of issues that arise by having a liquor licence, and we are bound by the laws 24 hours a day, not just when the bar is open, so we have created our own club “Alcohol Rules” that are on display at the club so people are aware of when and where alcohol can be consumed in compliance with liquor licencing laws.Having the bunk house complicates things even further, and when we hire to outside groups we have no control over their actions when it comes to alcohol consumption. We have discovered the best way around this is to suspend our licence when we have an outside booking that does not require the service of our bar facilities. This removes the responsibility from our management committee.

ValeRichard Andrew (DICK) WILKINS, 1937 -‐ 2013
Richard (Dick) Wilkins was the heart and soul of the Chiton Rocks SLSC in its early days.
I first met Dick in 1962 after the club had an article in the Sunday Mail newspaper saying that they needed both new members and financial support if the club was to survive. After talking with him I was persuaded to join the club.
Dick was club captain and led a very small group of members (approximately 10) to patrol the beach every weekend and over Christmas. Friday after work members met for a drink at an Adelaide hotel (Norfolk, Green Dragon or the Newmarket) and then jumped in their cars and drove to Chiton for the weekend. It was a regular occurrence to receive a phone call from Dick late in the week to make sure that there would be enough members to patrol for the weekend. I cannot remember a weekend that Dick missed in those early years and he also spent the Christmas holidays at Chiton as did most members.
Facilities were a bit basic in those days. The clubhouse was two single garages joined end to end and we slept, ate and kept the equipment in it. A toilet and a cold shower added to the luxuries. Work started on the “boat shed” and it was once again Dick who organised both the supplies and also the volunteer tradesmen to do the work. Dick who was an electrician by trade did most of the wiring of the building.
Dick was also the liaison with the late Lindsay LeMessieur for the New Years Eve fund raiser that Lindsay ran for the club for many years. It was a huge night with many of Lindsay’s friends held at his holiday home at Victor. Dick made sure we were all presentable (no easy task) when we acted as waiters for the night.
Dick was the person responsible for keeping the club going in the early sixties. With the help of a small group of members he organised the patrolling, the fund raising and a slow but sure building programme. Dick was also the main person responsible for keeping the very varied social side of the club going. Chiton was well known for its social activities at that time.
I believe it is true to say that without Dick Wilkins, there would not be a Chiton Surf Club today.

Gordon Curls
Gordon was known as Spider, he was a respected club member from the 60s.
He eventually married club member Avril, the sister of club member Brian Evans, Avril gave the most active support to the club at that time.
Regards, Jon Blenkarn
