Year 29: “Pray Until Something Happens!”

Dear Families and Friends of Faith: Our theme for this year was taken from Colossians 4:2: “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” (NKJV) Our hope this year was to demonstrate and practice with our students the concept of earnest and vigilant prayer. There have been many opportunities through our Bible classes, chapel programs, and simply day-to-day interaction with students that prayers “with thanksgiving” have been offered to the Lord. Once again we are pleased to offer this “Annual Report Card” of the various programs and achievements of the students of Faith Christian Academy. This is the fifth year of the “Annual Report Card.” This report will look a little different than the past. We will once again report on the various measures of progress related to enrollment, finances, and development. However, a greater focus will be on specific student accomplishments, including our most recent survey of graduates. God has blessed the school in many ways. As we prepare to celebrate our 30th year next year, we are thankful for our students, past and present and what they are accomplishing for the Lord around the world. It will be very difficult to identify all of those accomplishments and recognize all of our students’ achievements. The school has been conducting an annual survey of our families’ satisfaction for the past five years. This year’s surveys focused in three areas: spiritual formation, language arts, and technology. This is the year in our curriculum cycle that we review language arts, reading, phonics, spelling, etc. We appreciated the feedback from parents as this area of the curriculum is reviewed and various textbook providers have been researched. Because we implemented a technology fee last year for the first time, we wanted to get feedback related to our implementation of a technology plan, including interactive whiteboards, new computers in the lab, and new software. We trust that you will find this feedback helpful just as we did. We are always interested in feedback related to spiritual formation of our students. While this is an area that is difficult to measure, we desire feedback related to chapel services, Bible classes, and interaction of students with teachers and other staff members. This feedback has been tremendously helpful in gauging our spiritual leadership in the classroom and in other programs. Please rejoice with us as we celebrate what God has done at Faith Christian Academy and feel free to provide your feedback to the school on any of the items contained in this report. In Christ’s Service, Eric L. Kerns Administrator PS. My e-mail is [email protected]. Please feel free to contact me about the contents of this report.

Enrollment Patterns As you can see from the chart to the right, our enrollment has increased again this year. Our capacity at this campus is 300 students. With an enrollment of 299, we have very little room left for growth! The board is searching for property and a location for additional space for more students. Re-enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year is strong with over 93% of students re-enrolled. We anticipate an enrollment very close to this year’s number.

Finances

The enrollment increase and the fact that enrollment has remained steady throughout the year has helped the budget. Donations, especially undesignated giving, have also been very strong over the past three years. The chart to the left indicates the projected income for this fiscal year ending June 30, 2012. Our projected income will exceed our budgeted income by approximately $13,000.

The expenses can be categorized as indicated to the right. The Lord has enabled the school to remain within budget in all categories and barring unforeseen expenses, should be able to finish the year approximately $35,000 under budget in expenses. The “bottom line” from the end of the fiscal year 2011 (year ending June 2011) was that the school was $41,000 in the black. That was a tremendous blessing as some previous years had been difficult ones with small balances in the red. With the Lord’s blessing, Faith should be able to have another year in the black as of June 30, 2012. Faith has always been able to pay all of its bills on time.

Fundraisers A chart below indicates the various means of fundraising and donations to Faith Christian Academy. For most school years the amount of money charged in tuition and fees covers approximately 90% of the total income needed to operate the school (see section on finances). It is the desire of the school to increase this number to 95% and rely less heavily on fundraising and giving for the operation of the school. This year we are up to almost 92% of the budget covered by tuition and fees.

The 2011-2012 budget calls for $114,000 in fundraising and giving. All of the income categories (identified in the chart) are year-to-date. The proceeds from the golf tournament are a part of our fundraising, but are divided between financial assistance and the athletic program. The $4,500 in the chart represents one-half of the proceeds, which has been applied to financial assistance. The pie chart totals $120,000 in giving and fundraising with two months (May, June)

remaining in this fiscal year. As the figures indicate, income in these areas has exceeded budget so far this year. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness and blessings!

Academic Achievement Spring, 2012

Each year students in grades kindergarten through eleven are tested with a standardized achievement test. This year the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) began a new relationship with CTB McGraw Hill for the use of the Terra Nova Test. This test has been the most widely used of standardized tests and will be “normed” for ACSI schools this year.

SAT Scores 2011-12 ACT Scores 2011-12

The chart on the previous page shows the scores for all grades when compared to private and public schools nation-wide who took the test this year. Future years will also have a comparative score for all “ACSI schools”. The results of this test must be presented to our state department of education as a means of accountability.

Another area of assessment involves senior students taking college entrance exams. These students choose to take either the ACT or SAT college entrance exams (or both). The charts above indicate the most recent national average and our seniors’ scores for the past three years. The SAT scores were down slightly this year (6.5%), while the students’ ACT scores were up 1.8% from last year. Our students also compete for the Promise Scholarship through the state of West Virginia. Many students do not apply for that scholarship because it has to be used for a college in the state of West Virginia. This year there are 22 graduates and 9 have earned the Promise Scholarship. This scholarship is worth $4,750 toward tuition and fees.

Student Life

Students participate in athletics and other extra-curricular activities throughout the year. The goal of these activities is to strengthen their overall experience and provide opportunities for spiritual, social, and physical growth. Over the summer, Tyler Dotson, Breton Gates, and Philip Thomas participated in Mountaineer Boys’ State, an American Legion program. Boys’ State was founded in 1935.It is a one-week course in the operations of government and the political process. In the program the boys are referred to as citizens. Citizens can choose one of six career paths: legislative, judicial, financial, law enforcement, journalism and National Guard. They are trained in these career paths by choosing jobs from their respective areas of concentration. One of the highlights of the school year for students in the secondary grades is the retreat for the middle and high school. The middle school and high school go separately to Camp Sandy Cove in West Virginia for an overnight retreat. It is always a great time for fun and fellowship as well as spiritual growth of our students and staff.

Technology The new technology fee enabled the school to acquire many new computers, an upgraded computer lab with new furniture, four new interactive whiteboards, and several ceiling-mounted projectors. The goal is for our

Page 7: annual report card 12 - Faith Christian Academy in Martinsburg, WV

teachers to have access to interactive whiteboards in every classroom. The school is in the process of installing a brand new wireless network throughout the school thanks to a donation of Cisco hardware provided by a school family working for Presidio.

Alumni

Class of 2011

Zachary Gates (class of 2011), received a $480,000 scholarship to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. While at FCA, Zach participated in soccer and track, enrolled in AP and honors courses while maintaining a 4.10 grade point average. He also received the Academic Presidential Award and the Herbert Hoover Young Engineer Award. Although accepted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Zach chose the U.S. Naval Academy located in Annapolis, Maryland. During the 2011 FCA graduation, Ms. Julia Haislip a Blue & Gold officer for the U.S. Naval Academy presented a certificate of acceptance to Zach.

Alumni Survey 2011 Tracking Faith’s graduates has also become a major part of assessing where the school is academically as it prepares students for college and the work force. A survey was distributed to graduates last year to determine how prepared they felt for college and life in general. Here are some quick facts from that survey:

35 graduates completed the survey (20% response rate) 14 responded “still in college” 16 responded they had already obtained a Bachelor’s Degree 3 responded they had earned a Master’s Degree 4 are working on a Master’s Degree 1 has an earned Doctorate, and 1 has an earned Doctor of Jurisprudence

Alumni Occupations

The following chart represents how well our graduates felt prepared for various subject areas at the college level. The number one (1) represents “Not at All Prepared” while a five (5) stands for “Extremely Well Prepared”. The average score for each subject area is given.

Well Prepared? Another question on the survey asked how well prepared graduates felt in non-academic areas. The same scale of one through five was used.

Page 9: annual report card 12 - Faith Christian Academy in Martinsburg, WV

We are planning another survey of our graduates next year. Another blessing form the Lord last year was the amount of money that our graduates received in college scholarships. Last year’s graduating class received a total of more than $450,000 for their four years of college. This was an average of $28,125 per graduate.

Staff Picture: August, 2011

Faith is extremely thankful for the blessing of caring and professional teachers and staff members. The goal is to see faculty and staff members continue to learn and grow professionally while they are employed here!

Parent Survey Results 2012 Once again we used a scale of one through five with five representing the highest level of satisfaction. Because the school is evaluating its language arts and reading programs this year, the academic questions focused on this area. The following are questions asked of the elementary parents with the graph representing the average score of the answers. Language Arts Program Questions and Responses: Question #1: What is your level of satisfaction with the spelling and vocabulary words your child receives each week? Question #2: What is your level of satisfaction with the phonics and development of reading ability provided for your child? Question #3: What is your level of satisfaction with the school's emphasis on reading comprehension? Question #4: What is your level of satisfaction with the literature selections available in your child's reading program?

Question #5: What is your level of satisfaction with the emphasis placed on grammar and sentence structure? Question #6: What is your level of satisfaction with the development of your child's ability to write effectively?

Spiritual Formation Questions and Responses: In this part of the survey, question one had three options as indicated below: Question #1: Please choose the answer that best describes your expectation of Faith Christian Academy's responsibility in developing in your child a thoroughly Biblical view of the world. A. Faith is our only resource. B. Faith is one of several resources. C. We do not expect Faith to play any role. The chart indicates the answer that was most often given for question number one. The other five responses were based on the one to five scale described on the previous page. Question #2: What is your level of satisfaction with the Biblical instruction your child receives while in school? Question #3: What is your level of satisfaction with your child's Bible memorization program? Question #4: What is your level of satisfaction with the overall value of chapel services for your child's spiritual growth? Question #5: What is your level of satisfaction with the influence of Godly role models at Faith? Question #6: What is your level of satisfaction with the degree to which your child has developed a Biblical world view while at Faith?

Technology Questions and Responses: Once again, the technology questions were of two basic types. The first question is listed below with the possible answers. The chart identifies the answer most often given at each division for question number one. Questions two through five are based on the scale of one to five as described previously. Question #1: Please choose the answer that best describes your expectation regarding the availability of technology at Faith Christian Academy. 1. Faith should provide enhanced technology resources and training across all areas of the curriculum. 2. Faith should provide exposure to technology in some curricular areas. 3. Faith should provide limited exposure to technology in computer class only. 4. Faith should expose my child to less technology than it currently does. 5. Faith should not use technology at all. Question #2: What is your level of satisfaction with the computers your child has access to at Faith? Question #3: What is your level of satisfaction with the software your child has access to at Faith? Question #4: What is your level of satisfaction with the use of technology for instruction that occurs in your child's classroom? Question #5: What is your level of satisfaction with the Renweb site for homework and grade reports?

Not pictured: Albert Wiggins, Neil McLaughlin Certainly another area of blessing for the school is the faithful volunteers that serve as the school’s board of directors. Board members volunteer their time to serve the school in this manner. Board members come from the FCA Association and are voted into office by members of that Association. The FCA Association is a group of parents, family of students, friends of Faith, and staff members who make application to the board of directors for membership. Two requirements of Association membership are a testimony of salvation and agreement with the school’s doctrinal statement. Parents and friends of Faith who qualify are encouraged to apply to the board for membership in the Association. The board of directors forms a nominating committee each year to nominate Association members for board appointment. If an Association member is nominated and agrees to serve, there is a vote by the full Association at their annual meeting in May. The Association also votes on any recommended changes to the Faith Christian Academy Constitution. There are very strict rules built into the constitution that keep the by-laws from being changed easily. There are currently 72 members of the Association. Parents who believe they qualify for Association membership are encouraged to contact the school office for an application.

INDEPENDENT ACCOUNTANTS’ REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEM ENTS Each year Faith Christian Academy conducts a “Review” of the school’s financial statement. The school has voluntarily done this for more than 15 years, even though there is a much lower level of accountability required through the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). As a not-for-profit, 501(C) 3 organization for tax purposes, registered with the Internal Revenue Service, Faith encourages outside accountability regarding its finances and all of its programs and services. To the Board of Directors and Members of Faith Christian Academy, Inc.: We have reviewed the accompanying statement of assets, liabilities, and net assets-modified cash basis of Faith Christian Academy, Inc. (a non-profit corporation) as of June 30, 2010 and the related statements of revenue, expenses and changes in net assets-modified cash basis and cash flows-modified cash basis for the year then ended, in accordance with Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. All information included in these financial statements is the representation of the management of Faith Christian Academy, Inc. (“Academy”). A review consists principally of inquiries of Academy personnel and analytical procedures applied to financial data. It is substantially less in scope than an audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards, the objective of which is the expression of an opinion regarding the financial statements taken as a whole. Accordingly, we do not express such an opinion. Based on our review, we are not aware of any material modifications that should be made to the accompanying financial statements in order for them to be in conformity with the modified cash basis of accounting, as described in the accompanying notes.
