ANNUALREPORT
— 2013 —
Pulaski CountyCommunity
Foundation, Inc.
The Pulaski County Community Foundation encourages the growth of endowed funds to serve and enrich our community today and tomorrow.
The Board of Directors updated the Community Foundation’s mission statement this year, summarizing what PCCF does and for whom. How well are we accomplishing this mission?
…encourages growth - Total assets grew nearly 10% over 2012, topping $7.8 million by year-end. This was the result of conservative investment strategies combined with a renewed market, careful stewardship, community support, and an operating budget that has not increased in 5 years.
…endowed funds - Foundation funds now total nearly 100. While PCCF may accept temporary funds, 90% are permanently endowed. Such funds are the key for future benefit.
…to serve and enrich our community - With our intended long term investment return being met, the Board approved an increased payout percentage in the fall. This translated into an additional $96,000 in distributions over 2012.
…today and tomorrow – Endowed funds make distributions each year for local charitable purposes. 25, 50, and 100 years from now they will provide continued and greater support. Finally, many children have recently become “fans of philanthropy,” and their understanding is growing through youth grants, service projects, and scholarship awards. These youth are the leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you to everyone who has helped carry out this mission for our community! Wendy G. Rose Executive Director
For Today and Tomorrow
Paul Baker loved and served his community throughout his life. He was an educator, farmer, civic leader, mentor and encourager. Members of numerous community service programs and church organizations will recall his always willing and enthusiastic attitude.
After Paul lost his battle with cancer in 2011, wife Sue found a way to honor his memory, preserve his legacy, and benefit the community he loved all at the same time.
The Paul Baker Memorial Scholarship will assist Winamac graduates majoring in science or education and will be renewable throughout the recipient’s college years, making a lasting impact on the student’s future. The middle school science teacher, principal of three Winamac schools, and Caston superintendent will continue to support and educate others forever.
New FundsPulaski County’s first-ever Animal Center was officially created in 2013 with a group of passionate volunteers. Following much discussion, research, and planning, the group formalized with the creation of a board of directors, name and logo, and filing for charitable non-profit status.
Hard-working helpers walked in parades, held fundraisers, and were featured on TV and in news releases and social media to help spread the word.
The Community Foundation assumed a fiscal sponsorship role for the group and established the Pulaski Animal Center Start-Up Fund. This non-permanent fund accepts tax-deductible donations that will benefit the development of a local facility for abandoned and stray animals.
Youth Philanthropy
23 elementary students took part in a “Fans of Philanthropy Club” camp with the guidance of PCCF staff and volunteers. The after-school camp included stories, crafts, and activities to help children learn what philanthropy means and how they can take part. The week-long camp concluded with the completion of a project to help others. Students assembled and wrapped boxes of birthday party supplies for families in need.
Students learned that volunteering is one way to be a philanthropist.
West Central Fans of Philanthropy express excitement about Camp!
Eastern Pulaski Fans proudly display club t-shirts and birthday boxes.

Farmers Breakfast15 Years of Lilly ScholarsThe second annual Farmers Breakfast hosted by the Community Foundation brought the return of Dr. Chris Hurt, agricultural economist from Purdue University. His presentation addressed the question, “Will the U.S. Agricultural Prosperity Continue?”
Over 50 farmers came out for the early morning breakfast at the 4-H Fairgrounds.
The breakfast and program is made possible through partnership with the local Purdue Extension and area agri-business support.
Dr. Chris Hurt was introduced by Chad Rushing, Purdue County Extension Agent.
Good food, conversation, and information were enjoyed by all.
Sue Peppers, CPA, also spoke about the impact of new tax laws on basis vs. market value for farmers.
Representatives of 9 organizations described their grant projects at the annual celebration.
The Community Foundation offered $25,000 from its unrestricted resources for community grants in the fall. Grants were awarded for projects supporting the arts and community development to education, health, and social services.
