4 ALS Society of BC 2013 Annual Report
It has been an honour to serve as President of the ALS Society of BC for the past year. Being halfway through a two-year term, it is both exciting and inspiring to look back at what has been accomplished, and ahead to what can still be achieved through the efforts of an amazing group of very committed people who are dedicated to our mission of im-proving care and services for those living with ALS.
Our Society has continued to strengthen financially, allowing the programs we offer to not only be sustained but also to be continuously improved. Our strength has had the added ben-efit of allowing us to increase our strategic focus, and build a foundation to support continued success moving forward. This allows us build on our accomplishments to date in improving services available to patients and their families living with ALS, driving advocacy and awareness, and supporting research.
Our management team and staff, our volunteers and our Board and Committees have all played a significant role in the progress we have made. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in making TEAM ALS BC & Yukon the driving force behind the changes that have taken place. It has been a great team effort, but without Wendy and her awe-some team, we would not have made the progress we have on so many fronts.
Not only has the Society of BC has evolved, but so too our national organization as the 10 ALS Societies across Canada have strengthened their connection through the creation of the Federation of ALS Societies of Canada. Though still in its infancy, I believe the Federation has the collaborative potential to make a significant impact on national fund development, and positively drive unified awareness and advocacy. Our Society has played a key role in its creation, and over the next year will continue to nurture as it matures into a powerful coalition.
Again, it has been an honour to serve as your President and I look forward to the year ahead. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the many individuals who have served on our Board of Directors and on our Board committees over the past year. They have not only made my job fulfilling but have contributed greatly to our health as a vibrant Society fully engaged in improving the quality of care for those living with ALS in our province.

Message from the President of the Board

During 2013, the Society provided direct support to 423 people living with ALS. This is an increase of 28%/91 more clients compared to the previous year. This can be attributed to an increased awareness about the services provided by the Society. With our team of dedicated staff and volunteers, we were able to meet the needs of all.
In the fall of 2011, we set a goal to raise an additional $2 mil-lion over the next five years to increase our support for ALS research as we believe we are on the cusp of a major break-through. The increased efforts with our major gifts program have made headway towards this goal. A new strategic plan is being developed to ensure we meet or exceed our target.
ALS BC, along with other ALS Societies across Canada, participated in Hill Day at parliament hill in Ottawa, meeting with members of parliament to advocate for funding for ALS research and changes to the compassionate care program. Meetings with MPs in BC at constituency offices and an ex-tensive letter writing campaign followed. The outcome is still unknown at the time this document is written. Provincially, we are developing a similar program to keep provincial issues in the forefront of MLAs. This will be an annual event.
In 2013, we added more names to our growing team of volun-teers – TEAM ALS BC & Yukon. These dedicated people sup-port staff in all aspects of our organization. It is because of this support administration costs can be kept low. The funds raised can go directly to our programs and goal to increase support for ALS research.
Our relationship with the ALS Centre at GF Strong Rehab Hospital is solid. Two members of the team attended the International Motor Neuron Conference and presented posters alongside their colleagues from around the world. In partner-ship with the Centre, we are able to offer mobile clinics and in-service training to ensure the best quality of care can be provided throughout BC.
Moving forward we are committed to provide and improve our core services, increase support for ALS research and improve the quality of life for those affected by ALS.

6 ALS Society of BC 2013 Annual Report
The Support Group meets quarterly in Nanaimo. This coming year we are working to have meetings at least every second month. Following a guest speaker there is a discussion
period so people living with ALS and caretakers can speak on new ideas and things that have helped them in their journey that they wish to share with the group.
The annual Walk for ALS takes please in Parksville the second Sunday of June each year. Over $30,000 was raised in 2013. Our chapter transferred $15,000 to the Jean and Gord
Pearmain Endowment Fund for equipment and patient care in 2013. We continue to work to increase ALS awareness and increased fund raising.
We host and attend the Mobile Clinic in Nanaimo which is held each year. The team of professionals from the ALS Centre at GF Strong hold appointments with people living with ALS in our area on that day.
We are available to provide information on ALS and support those living with ALS in our region.
This Chapter averages about 30 to 35 people, people living with ALS at any given time.
Glenda Reynolds president, north Central island Chapter
I am proud to report the activities of the Victoria Chapter Living with ALS Support Group. Our monthly meetings from September to June keep our members connected and able to access our services.
The support group program each month features either a guest speaker or a discussion topic to engage our members.
The major fund raising efforts during the year included:
• TheWalkforALSinSeptemberledbyRasoolRayaniand Adele Fraser which raised over $57,000;

George“Sonny”WilliamsdiedonTuesday,January30,1996 at 12:20 am. The game of golf, and the entire province, lost a true friend.
Mr. Williams, the well-respected owner of Williams Moving & Storage, dealt with the debilitating effects of ALS for over 6 years before succumbing to it. Mr. Williams left his mark on many aspects of BC golf and business. He had been adamant in his pursuit of integrity for the moving industry. He was one of the first principal patrons for the BC Golf Museum. To add to his other contributions Mr. Williams was credited to the single handed saving the BC Open from a sure demise in 1982. In 1988 George Williams was named a CPGA honorary director for his contributions.
TheGeorge“Sonny”WilliamsEndowmentFundwascreated in 2003 to support caregivers of people living with ALS in B.C. In 2005 his son, Jim Williams requested that 30% of the ALS Golf Tournament proceeds be allocated to the Endowment Fund. The balance of the funds raised was donated to the ALS Society of BC. As well, 100% of the funds raised from individual donations and from the Williams Moving & Storage employees go to the fund. Disbursements go toward hosting Caregiver Day events to support the caregivers of people living with ALS.
peARmAin endowment fund Prior to retirement, Jean Pearmain was a Neurological Nurse. She worked with Neurologists that specialize in ALS including Dr. Andrew Eisen. Since that time, she served as director on the ALS Society Board of Directors and volunteered with her
husband Gord tirelessly for over 9 years supporting people living with ALS on Vancouver Island. At any given time Jean provided support to up to 30 ALS patients living in the North Central Vancouver Island region. She maintained an equipment storage locker and in many cases she and her husband Gord delivered the equipment themselves. Jean conducted home visits and coordinated the Nanaimo monthly ALS Support Group. The Pearmain’s participated in the Walk for ALS and Jean has acted as an escort for the On a Roll for ALS. Gord drove the support vehicle and Jean rode her bike next to the ALS roller. The Executive of the North Central Island Chapter established this endowment to honour the dedication of the Pearmain’s by establishing an Endowment Fund in their name. The disbursements go towards the ALS BC Equipment Loan Program.

Dr. Eisen is a founding director of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Society of British Columbia. He has been an active volunteer on the board since 1981, and has been named as a honourary life director.
Dr. Eisen is a brilliant and compassionate physician and neurologist, and a pioneer in the field of clinical neurophysiology. The University of British Columbia, Neuromuscular Diseases Unit (NDU) and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic was a coveted location for trainee physicians, technicians and other researchers to learn from one of the best clinician-researchers in the world.
His teaching legacy can be traced through his many books, hundreds of scientific papers and international lectures. Andrew’s influence and legacy as a teacher and mentor in the practice of neurology, clinical neurophysiology, and neuromuscular disease research can be traced all over the world.
Andy met Kathy in Montreal in 1963, when she was a Neurological Nurse and he was starting his Residency in Neurology at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Kathy then went on to work at the Allergy Clinic, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal until they moved to Vancouver in 1980. That year Kathy together with Dr. Donald Paty started the

AlS AdVentuRe ChAllenGe fund Lena Nilsson was born in Sweden. She married Nils and had two children, Peter and Lisa. The Nilsson’s made their home in North Vancouver, BC. Lena worked as a land developer and in property management until she was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in 2003. Prior to ALS, Lena was very active running, hiking, biking, boating, gourmet cooking, entertaining, restoring old homes, furniture and artifacts, and milling lumber. After her diagnosis, she focused her energy on travel, fundraising, reading, playing with her grandchild, learning American Sign language and raising awareness about ALS.
With the family’s encouragement, her daughter Lisa and her husband Dave Richardson came up with the idea of the ALS Adventure Challenge to raise money for patient care and research into the cause of, and cure for ALS. As Lena and her family had always been outdoor adventurers, the Challenge focused on trail running, kayaking and mountain biking. In the weeks leading up to the Challenge, participants are provided training in return for raising a minimum amount of donations which towards the Nilsson Foundation which funded this endowment. Revenue held in this fund support improved research technology and services for ALS Patients that will improve their quality of life, and new initiatives proposed by the ALS Society of BC.
These funds have been allocated for the purpose of supporting the Society’s activities in the event of a cash flow decline.
ViCtoRiA endowed fund The Victoria Chapter of the ALS Society of BC was founded in 1984. It has served to support local ALS patients and families through equipment loan plus financial and emotional support. The Chapter raises funds through many events, endowments, memorials, bequests, cash donations and also donations of medical equipment. The Fund’s purpose is to financially assist people living with ALS.

“I am writing this note to express my gratitude for the ALS summer camp opportunity offered to my daughter. Her grandmother has had extensive support from the ALS Society over the years. ALS BC sent out an email offering kids in families with a person diagnosed with ALS the chance to attend a four night retreat on the Coast. As a single mom with a limited income, this was so welcomed by myself, as without the financial assistance she would not have been given this opportunity. We do not ever go on any vacations outside of town so this retreat has been the highlight of her summer every year. The staff was so organized and helpful in making this retreat happen. They arranged transportation, and were so kind to my daughter. My daughter loved all of the staff and the activities and has made new ongoing friends from the retreat. I cannot express my appreciation enough.”

17ALS Society of BC 2013 Annual Report
-
“After long and valiant battles with ALS, Fire Fighter Ranny MacDonald passed away in 2003, and Battalion Chief Jim MacLeod passed away in 2009. Not only did the Vancouver Fire Department lose two good men, I lost two good friends. Ranny and Jim were avid outdoorsmen and would loved the idea of a fundraiser that introduces people to sporting clay events. So every year, we host Shoot for a Cure, both to raise money for the ALS Society of BC and to keep the memory of Ranny and Jim alive.”

“When we saw how much help ALSBC was giving our son before he died with ALS, we felt we just had to help the society as much as we could and that donating on a monthly basis not only made it easier for us but we’re sure helps the society manage their finances.”
Monthly GivingThrough the monthly giving program you are able to budget and spread your donation throughout the year and support the programs of the society.
For inquiries or other donation options, please contact: Rena Mendoza E: [email protected] P: 1-800-708-3228 ext. 225
Whether large or small, your gift is much needed and appre-ciated – every dollar makes a difference.
“This program has meant so much to us. To be able to access the necessary equipment, quickly, as this disease progresses has meant a lot to the quality of our life together.”
