Dear Friends – We’ve finished another wonderful year of empowering women through education thanks to your ongoing support. Due to your generosity, we were able to help 133 women fulfill their dreams of an education this year. They, along with their families, are moving towards self-sufficiency and a better life.

We continued implementing our Strategic Plan consisting of Three Pillars:

Create a SuStainable OrganizatiOn We further invested in our human capital by upgrading our Retirement Program from an IRA to a 401K. We launched the Planned Giving Advisory Board and they presented the Jeannette Rankin Legacy Lecture in November, a program created to celebrate our namesake, Jeannette Rankin. The second year of It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race engaged the Athens community that supports us.

grOw the SChOlarShip prOgram Our long term goal has been to provide more scholarships while maintaining sustainability. In 2017 we increased the number of scholarships from 108 to 133, a 23% increase. We were able to do that because of your support as well as a generous grant from Coca-Cola. Additionally, a bequest from Alexandra Kilpatrick via her cousin Donna Zenor provided long term support for Scholars from Arizona and Montana.

DevelOp a natiOnal preSenCe anD iDentity We expanded awareness of Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund through a robust social media campaign that reached far and wide. We continued our partnership with Bay Path Women’s University in Longmeadow, MA, a woman’s college that specializes in working with the nontraditional student. We held our first fundraising event in Missoula, MT, Jeannette Rankin’s home, as well as holding one in Hilo, HI. We added board members from New York City, Columbus, OH, and South Carolina.

Our continuing goal is to expand our reach and deepen our impact by providing more support to more women. We continue that journey with you as our partners.

Thank you for all you do to move our mission of empowering women through education forward.

5th annual running FOr rankin 5kIn August 2017, we hosted our 5th Annual Running for Rankin 5K, presented by Caterpillar! This event has been a fun way to engage our community over the years. We had participants of all ages, and had a blast running to empower women through education. This year, the 5K had more than 150 participants and raised $7,800 for JRF.

Jeannette rankin legaCy leCtureIn November 2017, JRF hosted the first annual Jeannette Rankin Legacy Lecture. The purpose of this event was to celebrate the legacy of Jeannette Rankin. Dr. Sara Hayden, a Jeannette Rankin rhetoric expert, was the keynote speaker and shared about the ways Jeannette Rankin used speech and word choice to influence her listeners during her political career. We also held a panel of the Founding Mothers of Jeannette Rankin Foundation. These five amazing women conceived Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund and worked hard to create opportunities that would benefit “mature, unemployed women workers,” fulfilling the wishes Jeannette Rankin stated in her bequest.

it’S time tO talk: FOrumS On raCeIn March 2018, JRF hosted the second annual It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race program, presented by the University of Georgia Student Government Association and Piedmont Athens Regional. This program allows JRF to carry forward the spirit of Jeannette Rankin, the woman, by working to advance equity in the Athens community. We partnered with J.W. Fanning Institute for

Leadership Development to train more than 30 Volunteer Racial Justice Facilitators who led table dialogues utilizing Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD.) Dr. Anna M. Scheyett, Dean of the UGA School of Social Work, provided the keynote address. Over 300 community stakeholders from both Athens and UGA participated. Our hope is that It’s Time to Talk creates a positive ripple effect in the Athens community.

athenS Smart party 1.0In October 2017, JRF hosted the first annual SMART Party in Athens, GA! This new event took the place of the Annual Dinner. We held the Athens SMART Party at Hotel Indigo and were able to engage many new friends for Jeannette Rankin Foundation. This fun, technology based, fundraising cocktail hour boasted more than 130 guests, and raised $35,000 for JRF! We heard from JRF Alumnae LaTrena Stokes and honored SMART Women Kim Arnold, Mokah Jasmine Johnson, Joni Taylor, and Katherine Wolf. This new event allowed us to leverage technology and social media in the Athens community, and connected us to new JRF friends and supporters.

Smart party atlantaIn November 2017, JRF hosted the third annual SMART Party in Atlanta, GA at The Gathering Spot. This event was generously presented by Assurant. Over 200 people attended the event, and we raised $78,000 for JRF! SMART Party Atlanta was incredibly fun for our guests - with a photobooth, amazing raffle prizes, and grand prizes to compete for to encourage fundraising. We heard JRF Scholar Marcie Andrews’ inspiring story and honored SMART Women Terrell Dinkins, Angelou Ezelio, Wanda Gamble, Sally Mundell, Monica Nixon, and Jennifer Riis-Poulsen. The SMART Party in Atlanta has been an outstanding fundraising success for Jeannette Rankin Foundation, and has allowed JRF to develop deeper roots in the Atlanta community.

barbara DixOn, the first woman to ever receive the Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholarship got her first check 40 years ago, in 1978. At the time, her husband had just passed away due to cancer, and she was figuring out how to raise her two teenage daughters and support her family on her own. She had become interested in nursing while spending time with her husband in the hospital during his treatment, and a friend encouraged her to pursue it. In 1978, Barbara enrolled in Athens Tech and one of her professors told her about the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, suggesting that she apply for the scholarship, so she did. As a result, Barbara became the first recipient of the scholarship and said “It was great! We all needed the money, but even more valuable was the confidence I received from the women who were the founders of the Jeannette Rankin Foundation.” Barbara went on to graduate in 1979, and worked as a nurse for more than 20 years, and ten years ago, after moving back to Athens, she became a volunteer at JRF! She says the moment of reconnection was a wonderful chance to come full circle, celebrate the foundation and women making the decision to go back to school, and give back to the community.

Adrian Spencer

Madelyn Sheaffer

aDrian SpenCer is a Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholar and a Coca-Cola Foundation Scholar from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She gave birth to two children during high school, but remained in school and graduated in four years. She was offered a full scholarship to play softball in college, but declined when she learned that it meant leaving her children behind. Adrian had to work after high school to make enough money to support her kids, which left little time for much else, including trying to go back to college, though that was always a goal for her. Her roles at work helped her develop dreams about what she wanted to do career-wise and kept her engaged in her community. When she lost her job in 2013, Adrian decided to pursue her bachelor’s degree and enrolled in college in 2014. She received the Jeannette Rankin scholarship in 2017, which has given her the opportunity to focus more on her studies and excel in school. Her dream is to use her degree to change her community and help it grow. She says “Often times the catalyst for change comes when someone takes the time to make a small investment in a person in need and empower them to do it for themselves.”

maDelyn SheaFFer is a Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholar from Hawaii, working toward her bachelor’s in gender and women’s studies. Her goal is to pursue her master’s in social work and become a clinical social worker, using her degree to help the homeless and to help empower women in marginalized situations. Madelyn has a heart for the homeless, as she herself became homeless after a sudden divorce left her alone with no resources and no job skills. She says “the scholarship quite literally keeps me alive in the day to day struggle to keep my head above water.” She knows the heartache and despair that being without shelter can bring, and she knows that her mission is to show those who feel they’ve hit rock bottom that they can indeed bring themselves out of the darkness and into a new life. “Through the educational process, I will gather up the tools I need to carve and create a better life for both myself and the people that I encounter, both professionally and personally.”

Aziza McGill

Cheila Garcia

aziza mCgill, a Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholar Alumnae, graduated in May 2018 from William Paterson University with a Bachelor’s in broadcast journalism and media production. Aziza’s goal is to use her degree to raise awareness about child abuse, domestic violence, and other issues that affect women and children through the media. Her dream is to eventually become a news anchor or journalist focused on investigating these issues. Aziza, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence, has used her story of survival to counsel and empower other women going through the same things she experienced. She says “For over 15 years I suffered at the hands of the one person that was supposed to protect me. I was homeschooled and raised with little education. My first school experience was not until I was 35 years old. Now I am an accomplished scholar with my name on the dean’s list.”

Cheila garCia, a Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholar and Coca-Cola Foundation Scholar at Bay Path University, is pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration. Cheila wants to pursue a career that will allow her to serve and help others around her, including co-workers and patients. Her confidence and determination have given her the drive she needs to focus on doing work that will make healthcare and treatment as affordable and high quality as it can be for patients. Cheila’s passion for the people around her has led her to pursuing this type of career. She says “A leader isn’t someone who tries to find the temporary solutions to problems, but wants to be a part of a long lasting solution.” Jeannette Rankin Foundation’s partnership with Bay Path University has made a way for women from all walks of life to grow and be empowered through their education, with the support they need to achieve their dreams.

Alix Kilpatrick

Donor StorieshOnOring the legaCy OF a liFe well liveDAlexandra Kilpatrick, better known as Alix, lived a life in which she focused on pursuing her dreams, from working at a theater in Paris, France, to opening a yoga studio in New Zealand, to flying for American Airlines. She was passionate about having a full life, and as she got older, she realized that she wanted to leave a legacy that helped to empower others to live a full life. She asked her cousin and childhood best friend, Donna Zenor, to research organizations that “enhance the lives of women through education,” leading to the discovery of Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund. Unfortunately, Alix died suddenly and was unable to leave the funds directly to JRF, but that didn’t stop Donna from doing everything she could to make sure Alix’s wish was honored.

“Alix is one of the most generous spirits to have ever inhabited this earth and the scholarship fund which the donor is establishing upon her death should be counted as one of the many gifts which are her legacy,” says Donna. This gift has been transformative, allowing us to empower more women. We are so grateful that Alix cared so deeply about the women we serve and that Donna found us. This gift will transform the lives of JRF Scholars and their families for years to come.

Thank you Alix and Donna.

the COCa-COla FOunDatiOnFor the second year in a row, the Coca-Cola Foundation has given JRF a transformative grant to clear Scholars off the waiting list. We received $150,000 this year from the Coca-Cola Foundation. That allowed us to award life-changing scholarships to 60 women across the U.S. We alerted these women that they were receiving scholarships in December, and awarded them their full $2,000 JRF Scholarship for the Spring 2018 semester.

We are so grateful that the Coca-Cola Foundation has continued to support the JRF mission of empowering women through education, and feel honored to be one of the many fantastic organizations that the Coca-Cola Foundation supports under their focus area of women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Dr. eliSSa perryDr. Elissa Perry volunteered as a JRF Application Reader this year, and helped us select the newest class of Jeannette Rankin Scholars! She dedicated her time and energy into ensuring that every application was read thoughtfully. Elissa is a new friend to JRF, and has very quickly cemented her relationship with us! After reading applications, Elissa felt inspired to fund two scholarships this year and took two women off our waiting list with her generous donation!

She says, “Education and educational opportunities are core values for me and so it is gratifying to hear how this donation can be used to hopefully make a real difference in peoples’ lives!” Thank you, Elissa, for your outstanding work as a volunteer and as a supporter of women in education.

in lOving memOry OF geOrge S. kOCh, Jr. – OCtOber 30, 1926 – July 25, 2018We mourn the passing of George Koch on July 25, 2018. We also celebrate his life and the legacy of hope he provided for Jeannette Rankin Scholars. George Koch, along with his late wife Ruth Koch, were generous and dedicated supporters of Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund. Over the years, they helped more than 100 women finish their education. On September 11, 2001, American Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. Ruth’s daughter and George’s stepdaughter Leslie Whittington, her husband Charles Falkenberg, and their small children Zoe and Dana Falkenberg were on that plane. Zoe and Dana were the youngest victims of 9/11.

In memory of the Whittington - Falkenberg Family, George and Ruth turned this tragedy intro triumph through scholarships provided to Jeannette Rankin Foundation. George and Ruth generously helped more than 100 Scholars through JRF. Through these scholarships, Leslie, Charles, Zoe and Dana continue to make an impact on women working to make a better life for themselves and their families. We mourn the loss of this wonderful family, and are so grateful for the legacy they’ve left and the impact they continue to make on our JRF Scholars.

In October, we were surprised with a visit from Ann’s daughter, Alice, where she presented us with a generous check on Ann’s behalf. We are committed to honoring Ann’s legacy by continuing on with the good work she supported throughout her life. We are so grateful for the Woodruff family’s love and support.Ann Woodruff
