Our Mission Opportunities for Inclusion’s mission is to serve

children, adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in the community, utilizing a person-centered planning

approach. We provide quality, flexible programs, services and

supports which maximize independence, foster inclusion, promote self-advocacy and build

community connections. Our programs are based upon self-determination, sound teaching practices and the

latest technology. We are committed to advocacy and legislation to

influence attitudes and perceptions so individuals may choose and achieve life goals.

Opportunities for Inclusion programs are funded by the Division of Medical Assistance (MassHealth), the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and private fees.

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits the Day Habilitation, Community Based Day Supports (CBDS) and Adult Family Care (AFC) Programs. Day Habilitation and CBDS programs are licensed by the Department of Developmental Services Survey and Certification process.

Referrals are received through the Department of Developmental Services, Department of Medicaid Assistance, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. Opportunities for Inclusion also accepts private pay.

 

From the Opportunities for Inclusion Leadership

Greetings and welcome to the Opportunities for Inclusion Annual Report. Inside you will see many highlights from a year well spent.

We were proud to again serve over 300 people in our programs—Day Habilitation; Employment, Community Based Day Supports & Transitions (ECB); Adult Family Care (AFC); and Recreation. In this, the agency’s 62nd year of services to the greater Waltham community, our mission is strong and the need for support to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities is vital.

Two big changes this year, and we believe for the better, were the agency’s name change and the outsourcing of financial and business transactions. Both went smoothly and many are to be thanked for the administrative and community outreach needed to get the jobs done.

Our new name, Opportunities for Inclusion, reflects our mission to be part of the community for employment, recreation and socialization. This includes forming new relationships outside of our two facilities—perfect examples are the recent hire of two participants into competitive employment and the friendships formed as we volunteered in five food pantries and for Meals on Wheels. Stakeholder feedback has been positive during the name selection and going forward since the change.

We welcomed Non Profit Capital Management, LLC as our new offsite administrator of financials—payroll, contracts and accounts payable and, of course, the annual audit. This company has made us more knowledgeable, more efficient and paper free in only a few short months.

We look to the coming year for more changes, led by the Board of Directors who are welcoming four new members. We urge you to consider learning more about our agency and consider joining the Board of Directors to lead us forward with quality and sustainable programming.

Activities and Accomplishments: Arts programming with artist-in-residence CC King and our

direct care staff resulted in beautiful art work displayed in the community and in our annual calendar (Day Hab and CBDS)

Music therapy sessions, drumming/singing sessions with Mace Miller and Friday afternoon music continued to support communication and connections through music (Day Hab and CBDS)

Through grant funding, visited BINA Farm for equine therapy activities (brushing, feeding, making friends with horses)

Bentley Service-Learning students volunteered three days a week

Planted, tended and harvested our raised bed gardens Shopped and delivered supplies to local food pantries as part of

the Rotary-Opportunities for Inclusion Food Pantry Project (Day Hab and CBDS)

Day Habilitation

Employment, CBDS & Transitions

Activities and Accomplishments: Community Based Day Supports (CBDS): Art and sharing circles with artist CC King and music with James

Jones held in the community at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club Weekly delivery of Meals on Wheels to Waltham residents Bentley Service-Learning students volunteered one day a week Gardened at Woodland Road and Waltham Community Garden Enjoyed our annual picnic at Lake Cochituate

Employment Group Supported Employment sites at Brandeis, Bentley and

Babson continued to thrive Two individuals were hired by Chartwells at Lasell College and

Adult Family Care

Activities and Accomplishments: Ongoing support and training for 46 families in Middlesex,

Norfolk and Essex counties Prepared for and awarded our first AFC CARF accreditation Communicated with state legislators to help advocate for

restoration of AFC provider rates Significant AFC program marketing, including: attendance at

seven high school events, including five transition fairs; participation at events at Councils on Aging; a public service announcement on CCTV; various Waltham community events; participation at numerous conferences and networking events; outreach to faith-based communities

Recreation

Activities and Accomplishments: We continued to grow with many new trips and activities along

with all the old favorites Dances at the French American Club continue to be very

popular and attract persons from the community Recreation activities have been both fast and slow paced with

popular destinations including the Boston Swan Boats and NASCAR at Seekonk Speedway

Watch City Self Advocates hosted an MSPCA supply drive with the support of the Jones Partnership Fund. Self Advocates meet monthly with continued support for Operation American Soldier and joint meetings with the agency’s Program Advisory Committee

Workforce/Administration

Activities and Accomplishments: Conducted staff trainings in behavioral consultation, autism

spectrum disorder, clinical skills, health maintenance, intellectual and developmental disabilities (incidence, diagnosis and best practices)

Successfully completed our once-every-three-years accreditation process with the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)

Celebrated Direct Support Professional Recognition Week with lunch for all staff

Completed all federal, state and financial activities needed and transitioned to our new agency name

Outsourced agency accounting and financial activities to Non Profit Capital Management

Marketing & Development

Activities and Accomplishments: Rebranded to our new name and created a new agency video

entitled “Inclusion in Action!” All participants and staff received an Opportunities for Inclusion t-shirt funded by 9 local businesses and individuals

Year 2 of “Spring for GWArc!,” our WCAC-TV Live Auction, was a successful fundraiser and created community awareness of our new name and logo

The Artists of Opportunities for Inclusion displayed artwork at the Waltham Mills Open Studios and at the Waltham Public Library. We also created a calendar with art and photography

Annual Harvest Breakfast fall fundraiser was a great success! Grants received for arts programming, community service,

equipment, healthy cooking and exercise, School to Work Transitions Program, Employment Services and Equine Activities/Therapies

Opportunities for Inclusion is governed by a Corporate Membership of 51 volunteers who elect a 15-member Board of Directors to oversee corporate operations. These volunteers represent the Greater Waltham community, including participants in Opportunities for Inclusion programs, family members, the professions, local businesses and local service organizations. They provide valuable expertise, linkages and support to the organization.
