Brief Introduction of CDS
Community Development Society (CDS) is a
non-government organization with registered
number F/602/Anand working for the needy
and poor people residing in the slum and
backward areas of Gujarat. CDS aims at
empowering the needy and poor people by
equipping them with skills and education.
CDS also strives to bring awareness among
people so that they can see what their rights
are and how their lives could be parallel to life
of the any citizen of India as prescribed in
Indian constitution. Throughout the year
2017-18, regular courses and various
activities were carried out at regular basis for
bringing difference in the lives of the target
group. The regular courses run by CDS are
indicated in the figure.
In each course, the target group is from slum
or the backward areas having backward social
and economical conditions. These courses are
carried out all throughout the years in
different batches. In each course, education or
skill development is targeted which ultimately
leads to the beneficiaries to have the
possibility of becoming educated or having
employability or income generation.
Throughout the year, apart from the studies,
different co-curricular activities and some
short term programmes are held for the
overall development of the trainees and
students.

In the year 2018-2019, 6 units of kinder-
garten in different slum areas were run by CDS. The
kinder gartens are located in slum areas only. The
children of the age group 3 to 5 were admitted in
these kinder gartens. These kinder gartens are the
entry point in education for the children who are
mainly engaged in rag picking. So the opportunity is
created for them to avail education in their own
area. The details of the kinder gartens are given in
the table.
Community Development Society (CDS) Annual Report: 2018-19
As per the above table, the total numbers of
students studying in total were 180 (30 in each).
Ashaben Patel, Kleraben Chauhan, Meenaben
Parmar, Hansaben, Madhuben and Kusumben
Vhora worked as teachers in these kinder garten
units respectively. The children get education in
the kinder gartens free of charge. These
kindergartens divert the path of their life from
child labour to education. The teachers who
teach in the kinder garten focus more on
preparing the children for life by play way
method.
Local teacher having the knowledge of socio
cultural background of the slum people acts as a
teacher in each kinder garten. Activity oriented
learning, teaching through self made low cost
learning materials, focus on awareness regarding
manners, cleanliness, self, rights, health and
hygiene and values, teaching of alphabets and
number, action songs, reading & writing are
some of the striking features of these kinder
gartens. Atmosphere of love & care is provided to
the students. Health check up is done once in a
year of all the students. They are taken to Picnic
too.
Community Development Society (CDS) Annual Report: 2018-19
Preventing children from rag-picking and
diverting them to education is the prime
intension of running these kinder garten.
These kinder gartens are the gate-ways to
education for slum children. And continuation to
their entry in education is ensured by providing
motivation for joining Shubham Primary school
after completing study in kinder gartens. The
teachers were trained in teaching learning
processes to offer better education.
These 6 kinder gartens are unique in terms of
having all first generation learners in them. The
parents, being illiterate, do not provide any
learning environment at home. Moe over, when
they go for work during the day, the students
stay at the kinder garten. To make the parents
aware about the importance of Education, we
organize parents’ meetings too and seek support
from them to make the students avail education,
rather than going for the rag picking.
The kinder gartens are the places where each
slum children is treated with human dignity and
they are made to feel that they are human beings
who would grow by getting education. It is also
made sure that the children enjoy their
childhood in variety of ways and at the same
time, they learn and get ready for schooling.
Community Development Society (CDS) Annual Report: 2018-19
The students of all the Flory kinder gratens
were taken to one day Picnic in a village named
Vadtal which is just 10 kilometers away from
Anand. The kinder gartens are situated in slum
areas. Moreover , when children move around
city for collecting plastic or rubbish, they go
into dirty areas only. So, These students hardly
get chance to enter into nice, well maintained
gardens and sightseeing places. So this one day
picnic was a very valuable and enjoyable time
for all the students away from slum areas.
All the students were taken to “Gyaan Baug”
( Meaning : Garden of Knowledge where
various types of flora and fauna are present) in
Vadtal by Bus. On the way to the place of
picnic, students sang songs and enjoyed a lot.
In the garden, they were made to take a round
of the garden first. The teachers showed them
various plants, flowers and trees and made
them memorise the names. They were also
made to touch, smell and feel different things
and thus, training of senses were given in
natural surroundings. The students also played
on slipperies, small merry go round, sea-saw
and other playing apparatus. This was very very
enjoyable because most of students played on
such things for the very first time in their lives.
It was very difficult for all the teachers to make
the students go further away from playing
apparatus. The students enjoyed food in the
natural surroundings. And after the lunch, they
visited a famous lake situated in the village.
The beauty and the cleanliness maintained in
that area was noticed by the students.
They also visited a temple and learnt about
various mythological stories related to that
temple. The exhibition, there, was also
enjoyed by the students.
They were again brought bake to their
respective slum houses at the end of the day.
It was like a living a dream for all the students.
The mixed feeling of having enjoyed the day
fully and arriving at the end of the day was
clearly visible on the faces of the students.
Next day, in each kinder gartens, they were
asked to recall what they saw and shared their
experiences with their fellow students. They
also talked about another students from Flory
Kinder garten but from a different slum area
whom they met in the picnic It was really a
fun-filled and learning generative experience
for the students.

Community Development Society (CDS) Annual Report: 2018-19
Concluding Note by the President
Community Development Society (CDS) over the last two decades has established itself as
an organization committed towards welfare and empowerment of slum children and
needy and poor women. The organization has worked with multiple stakeholders:
governmental bodies, media, private sector, international and national NGOs and
multilateral organizations to create a platform and an understanding towards this
marginalized and voiceless section of the society.
The year 2018-19 has been the year of achievements for CDS. Collaborative approaches
once again paid the desired result. During the year we effectively implemented our
regular projects, reaching out to over many children and young girls and women directly
through education, skill building and various services and activities.
It is equally satisfying to see CDS’s increasing ability to handle multiple projects through
the skilled and dedicated team it has been able to build. I Thank, Each and Every staff
member of CDs who have put on untiring efforts to accomplish the vision of the
organization.
Equally grateful I am to all the donors, supporters and well- wishers for putting in trust in
CDS and contribute in every way possible to build a society where there are no
deprivation and no discrimination. We are grateful to have such a dynamic team,
generous donors and our collaborating partners. We heartedly laud their valuable
support.
Quality, credibility and transparency are not just the technical jargons for us. We, at CDS,
make sure that they are observed in our day-to-day practices. In the coming year, we look
forward to expand our work and services to new potential locations with the same values
and spirit.
Manoj Macwan, President, CDS
