The Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap went into overdrive in 2017. One minute we were cruising along at the free store, helping teach-ers shop and accepting donations here and there. Then spring came, and our donation shelves were overflowing with donations from teachers, individuals, and businesses doing spring cleaning. Over the summer, a flutter of media attention led to a tremendous volume of people interested in donating, receiving supplies, and volunteering. In the fall, the Swap was featured on the Facebook series “Returning the Favor,” which brought on a whole new round of activity.
Most importantly, the Swap gave away more supplies than ever: $127,102 worth. Underfunded schools are unable to provide sufficient materials for classrooms, which puts the burden on teachers to spend their own money. This is costly and frustrating to teachers, and harmful to students who don’t have the tools they need to be successful. Teachers and students de-serve better, and we worked hard in 2017 to give them something better. We can’t wait to make an even bigger difference in 2018.

Value of Supplies
I am so grateful for the Teacher Supply Swap. I’ve been teaching for over 10 years in Baltimore City, and each year we are told that the budget is frozen but are still expected to provide materials for literacy, science and math. The Teacher Supply Swap saves me so much time and money, and I find treasures every time. It’s a bright spot to teachers like me!

Value of Supplies
The average teacher spends over $500 on classroom supplies with their own money
every year. The Swap helped teachers keep that money in their pockets by giving
them supplies at no cost.
Value of Supplies Received by Teachers
2017 $127,102
2016 $49,320
2015 $20,660
Value of Supplies
Members receive free supplies by visiting the Swap as often as they need to.
We believe that anyone who needs educational materials deserves access to them,
no matter where, who, or what they teach.

Towson University has been the largest preparer of teachers in the state for over 150 years. It’s fitting for us to support this organization that helps so many teachers. We were proud to donate multiple carloads of surplus office supplies, including paper trays, book ends, and picture frames, to this worthy cause.

Donation Pickups
6
We collect donations from anyone who has supplies they no longer need.
Donors have the option to deliver donations to the Swap or schedule a pickup.
This service is invaluable for those who wish to redistribute supplies they no longer need,
but don’t have a way to get them to the Swap.

Volunteers
Volunteers keep the Swap up and running. They sort donations, take inventory, organize the
free store, assist guests, pick up donations, and so much more. We share fun experiences
together as we support teachers. Our team includes members who want to give back,
individuals earning service hours, and folks who want to make a difference.

As a teacher, the Swap has granted me support from shoppers and other volunteers. Many have shared their own experiences or, just as importantly, a listening ear. Regardless of how my week has been, it is so wonderful to be surrounded by altruistic and compassionate people who want to help teachers and each other.

Supply Mobile
In June, the Swap was gifted a box truck by Len the Plumber to be used as a
Supply Mobile to deliver free materials to Baltimore City schools. A group of art
teachers spent hours designing and painting the exterior into a work of art.
A committee of volunteers drafted plans to retrofit the truck interior into a free store
on wheels, and also did the installation. Their collaboration and dedication will benefit
schools across the city.

Business Volunteers
Business Volunteers Maryland’s GIVE program engages rising leaders to
support local nonprofit organizations. The Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap was
selected to receive nine months of pro bono services from a GIVE team of fellows.
The team developed a marketing strategy to increase awareness of our services.
They facilitated focus groups, created flyers, revamped the website, ran a supply drive,
and cultivated relationships with stakeholders. We could not have reached
so many donors and beneficiaries without their hard work.
