President’s Letter

The past year has brought us many challenges and opportunities as the numbers of families in need remains

high. During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, we continued to serve an average of 101,000 people each month. We

are experiencing a new normal, where many people may be back to work but at a reduced level of earning –

they are still unable to meet the basic needs of their families. With your help, we have been able to continue

bridging the gap to help ease the stress of putting food on the table.

We are proud that more than 15 million meals were distributed to those in-need throughout our 90,000

square mile service area through emergency food pantries, shelters, child care programs and senior centers.

The children and youth of our communities received more than 393,000 meals through Kids Cafe through

the after school and summer programs, and another 23,000 meals through school pantries. There were

147,600 meals distributed to chronically hungry and homeless children through the Back Pack Kids

program providing weekend food. More than one million meals were distributed to seniors in our area

through the senior monthly box program (CSFP) and 3.3 million meals were leveraged through SNAP

Outreach. Mobile Pantry brought 1.9 million meals of perishable foods to families, the majority of which

were fresh produce.

The 2014 Hunger In America Study was released, providing insights into the struggles our clients face on a

daily basis. We know that more than 70% of client households live at or below the poverty level, which is

$19,530 or less for a family of three. We learned 53% of client households have a member with high blood

pressure and 32% of client household have members with diabetes, nutrition-related diseases common in

poor families. At the same time 85% of client households have reported purchasing inexpensive poor-

quality food because they didn't have the resources to buy healthier options. We found that 69% of client

households reported having to choose between food and medical care and 58% of client households chose

between food and housing.

These stark realities help us understand where our focus needs to be and remind us that the answer to the

health of the family is only partially about food. We know that we must strengthen and deepen our

involvement with agencies working in other sectors of human services (affordable housing, workforce

development/income, financial stability) in order to make our community healthier and give our children

the best chance for a bright future. With your help, we have been able to continue this important work and

we are full of gratitude and hope for the future. Together we can solve hunger.

olunteers are truly the heart of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Their selfless giving of their time and talent is so very important to the work of helping our hungry neighbors. Without volunteers it would be impossible to sort, pack and distribute the millions of pounds of food that pass through the doors of the facility. Thank you so much to these committed heroes. On behalf of the clients we serve, we are so grateful!

Programs and InitiativesFood Distribution through Partner Agencies The majority of food distributed each year through the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is through our partner agencies. There are more than 135 organizations throughout our 90,000 square mile service area that distribute food to those in need. Partner Agencies are emergency food pantries, shelters, family resource centers and more.

Mobile PantryThe Mobile Pantry program distributes fresh

produce and other perishable food directly to clients in the neighborhoods where they live. Mobile Pantry is a

direct service program of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada developed to increase the

amount of fresh produce delivered to families who are enable to afford it.

School Food Pantries The School pantry program is a type of neighborhood pantry that is designed to target children and their families who are missing meals. School pantries are only possible with the support of the school districts, counselors, teachers and administrators who make food available to families in their neighborhoods.

Back-Pack KidsThe Back-Pack Kids program offers weekend food to chronically hungry or homeless children distributed through the school districts. Without these weekend meals, children return to school on Mondays unable to focus on school. The Back-Pack Kids program is supported entirely by donations from our community.

Kids CafeKids Cafe is a program that offers free meals to children and youth when they are out of school. This can be an after school meal or a meal during the school breaks or during the summer time. Kids Cafe meals are available to all children between the ages of 1 and 18 and are always free. * This vital program aims to fill the outside-of-school nutrition gap for children who rely on free meals at school. Kids Cafe meal programs operated at 38 after school sites and 68 summer meal sites during the year.

*In accordance with federal law and USDA policy, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Adjudication, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call toll free (866) 632-9992 (voice). Individuals who are hearing impaired or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339; or (800) 845-6136 (Spanish). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Nutrition EducationHelping people gain access to important nutrition information is the goal of the Nutrition Education program at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Information is provided on nutritious food choices, simple food preparation, safe food handling, getting the most nutrition with a limited food budget, and increasing physical activity for healthy living. The Food Bank offers Smart Shopper, a class for adults on making the most from their food budget, and Nutrition on Wheels, which offers nutrition tips, recipes, and even samples right at Mobile Pantry sites.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)This is a program that distributes monthly boxes of food to seniors in need. Boxes are distributed at many sites around northern Nevada and may include cheese, cereals, beans, rice or pasta and canned fruits and vegetables. CSFP is also supplemented by the Mobile Pantry program to offer fresh produce to hungry seniors.

SNAP OutreachSNAP (formerly food stamps) Outreach is a program that helps people get connected with federal nutrition benefits. Outreach workers assist clients with paperwork and also conduct the in-person interview required to qualify for benefits.

Bridges to a Thriving NevadaThe Bridges to a Thriving Nevada initiative uses the Bridges Out of Poverty framework and community collaboration to combat generational poverty with a multi-pronged approach. Bridges provides tools that show how the lack of understanding of economic class affects the goal of having a sustainable community. The initiative also includes Getting Ahead, a sixteen week program for people from generational poverty that helps them to uncover the resources necessary to permanently exit poverty.

Collaboration for Clients People who experience food insecurity are dealing with many additional issues that affect their lives and their ability to meet their basic needs. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is collaborating with experts in many other sectors in our community to begin addressing other issues facing our clients. Working closely with entities focused on jobs, housing, health and other factors will help us build healthier, more food secure neighborhoods in a comprehensive way.

Service StatisticsDuring the fiscal year of 2014-2015, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada distributed more than 13.9 million pounds of food providing 15,150,560 meals to those who need them in the region.
