On behalf of all of us at Methodist Sports Medicine Research and Education Foundation, we wish to thank you for your continual support. Your commitment makes it possible for us to carry out our mission of helping people of all ages maintain an active lifestyle. In this annual report you will read about the important work and achievements which were made possible by our dedicated physicians, staff and board members.

The Indiana Sports Concussion Network initiative is dedicated to educating athletes, parents, coaches and members of the healthcare community about concussions and the serious consequences they present, especially if the brain is not allowed to fully heal before returning to play. We utilize ImPACT, a computer-based neurocognitive test to assist with safe return-to-play decision. In 2014, due to a generous gift from the Indianapolis Colts, we were able to provide 15,011 baseline ImPACT tests to Indiana high school student athletes at no cost. We also have trained 238 health care professionals from around the state on how to use the ImPACT test and improve the care of

concussion treatment in their community. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics appropriate concussion management is essential for reducing the risk of long term symptoms and complications.

Research is an integral component of our mission. This past year we had 16 active research projects and four research studies in the development stage. Our physicians produced six articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals and gave over 50 presentations at medical conferences.

The education of orthopedic surgeons is a critically important mission of the Foundation. We are recognized as having one of the preeminent sports medicine fellowship programs. Our most recent graduate of this program is Ryan Jaggers, MD who joined our physicians

at Methodist Sports Medicine and Kirk Cleland, MD who is doing a Hand Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Joining the program this year was Bart Eastwood, DO who has been practicing since 2010 at Regional Orthopedics in Spearfish, SD and Amar Mutnal, MD who completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Through our fellowship program, the foundation has now built a network of 49 fellows worldwide who share the advanced ideas and concepts they learned at Methodist Sports Medicine to their patient base. All of these noteworthy achievements would not be possible without

considerable support. As I look back at the accomplishments over the past 10 years and look to the future, I feel a deep sense of gratitude toward those friends who make our research and educational efforts possible. On behalf of the Board of Directors and physicians we wish to express our heartfelt and sincere appreciation to the many individuals and corporations for their valued support.

The Laddie Golf Tourney

We had 25 foursomes who enjoyed at great day of golf and fellowship. Special thank you to our Laddie Golf Chairperson, David Mazanowski.

The Laddie is named in the honor of Thomas A. Brady, MD, who is the father of sports medi-cine in central Indiana. Dr. Brady established a walk-in clinic in the basement of Methodist Hospital in the late 1960’s. This clinic endured until it became the Methodist Sports Medicine Center. Being a good Irishman, Dr. Brady would call many of those he worked with “Laddie.” Therefore, in recognition of Dr. Brady and his medical legacy we call Methodist Sports Medicine Research & Education Foundation golf tournament, “The LADDIE.”

The Laddie Golf Tourney was held on June 6, 2014 at the Prairie View Golf Club.

FELLOWSHIP

A “fellow” is a person appointed to a position granting a stipend and allowing for advanced study or research. I believe those two definitions sum up my experience as a fellow at Methodist Sports Medicine. From the day I rotated as a fourth year medical school student with the group, I knew they were a friendly, caring group that shared my interests

and values. My one-year orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship afforded me a well-rounded advanced study in sports medicine. I learned a tremendous amount of clinical and research knowledge, as well as practice management skills. More than that, I was thrilled to model expert, compassionate doctors that take superb care of their patients. There is not another sports medicine fellowship program in the country that offers such expertise/subspecialized sports care in all areas of the body. I worked side by side with the surgeons in the clinic, as we managed patients nonoperatively. I then was able to assist in the operating room honing my operative skills and developed postoperative protocols including physical rehabilitation. I was even able to work one on one with the physical therapists learning about the recovery phase as we rehabbed the patients back to full function.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “fellowship” as a friendly relationship among people who share interests or feelings.

Brian Webb, MD16

He is the team physician for Hanover College and Eastern Handcock High School. “My training with Methodist Sports Medicine was vital in preparing me for practice. I was taught how to care for athletes at all skill levels. I was given the opportunity to participate in care at the professional level and hone my own skills at the collegiate and high school levels. Not only did my mentors teach me surgical and clinical skills, but they also served as role models for how treat patients and how to run a practice. My fellowship training is an asset to me every day as I move forward with my own career. “

I also learned a tremendous amount caring for athletes in the training room and on the field from my vast experiences taking care of high school, college, and professional teams. It was a dream come true to work with Dr. Rettig and colleagues as they cared for my favorite childhood team, the Indianapolis Colts. With the assistance of the physicians and research staff, we wrote 3 manuscripts and a book chapter, and we presented a case study poster. As the business of medicine becomes more complicated, it is critical to be economically efficient. Some of the business aspects I was able to learn from the practice included patient flow through the clinic, marketing strategies, and ancillary income avenues. I have taken all these many skills with me that I learned at Methodist Sports Medicine.

There is no doubt in my mind these skills have helped me advance in my career as the interim Chairman, the Director of Sports Medicine, and the Director of Medical School Musculoskeletal Education of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. I look back extremely fond of my time with Methodist Sports Medicine. Often when I am challenged with a difficult problem, I ask myself what would they do back at Methodist Sports Medicine. I am appreciative of all the folks who helped make it such a wonderful experience. Brian Webb, MD

Ryan R. Jaggers, MD has joined the Methodist Sports Medicine team.

These fellowships are made possible through the generous support of friends of the Methodist Sports Medicine Research and Education Foundation and a special thanks to the following Fellowship Sponsors.

Concussions continue as a hot topic in the news media as it pertains to reporting on injuries related to sports. Concussions remain a great concern for parents, coaches and others associated with sports. Permanent injury to the brain and even death have occurred in almost every state and were often the dominant factor that insured passage of concussion legislation in each state. The increased publicity and awareness of permanent injuries and early dementia in veteran NFL players has tempered the enthusiasm of some parents and young athletes to decide not to play football. New developments in helmet design and protective gear have been unable to reduce the risk or the incidence of concussion. What is the solution to this dilemma?

Multiple types of motivation come into play when a young person decides to play sports. A competitive nature, the motivation to win, an association with other players and the comradarie that it creates are a few. Sometimes, however negative elements occur when one becomes so driven to win that it takes precedence over playing the game fairly. Playing the game to be hurtful to other opponents or unsportsmanlike play can be undisciplined motivation. The mindset of the player is dependent on many variables including coaching, encouragement by the parents, peer pressure and publicity by the media. Glorifying unhealthy plays and heavy hits create the wrong motivational goals. The real goals should be having fun, winning, being part of a team effort and

learning how to win and lose and to still exhibit good sportsmanship. These positive aspects of sports performance prepare the athlete for the rest of their life and the ups and downs of getting along with people with a positive attitude.

Some solutions to the dilemma include changing the sport to allow safer participation. Current rule changes happening particularly in football seem to be making a difference. The NFL is leading the way. Coaching regulations instituted in changes to the Indiana concussion law have been implemented. These require football coaches who coach players from age 20 and younger to take an approved educational course which covers concussion awareness, heat acclimatization, proper equipment fitting and proper coaching technique to pass the course and be certified before they can coach football. Some success has been experienced in toning down the glorification of hard hits and other aggressive questionable plays by the media. The mindset of the player, coaches and parents must be changed to meet the goals of meaningful and safe participation.

Research must continue to develop new techniques, better equipment, better diagnostic skills and better prognostic ability to look for ways to prevent return to play if the brain is still at risk for further injury. Safety first has to be the new mantra for sports participation. This can only be accomplished for everyone works together as a team for the same win.

For the sixth year in a row, two physicians from Methodist Sports Medicine (MSM) gave nearly 100 homeless men free foot exams, shoes and socks. Drs. David Porter and Jonathan Smerek continued the practice’s commitment to serving others through their work at the annual “Our Hearts to Your Soles” event at Wheeler Mission Ministries in downtown Indianapolis.

“It’s really an honor for us to be part of what Wheeler Mission is doing, I’m so impressed with the different programs they have for these men and to play a small role in that,” said Porter.

In addition, Indianapolis Colts’ corner back Darius Butler and nearly 20 MSM volunteers were on hand to distribute the new socks and shoes and serve meals to the men.

“Antoine Bethea has been here in previous years, I came along with him a couple of years ago and decided the carry the torch since he’s moved on,” said Butler “People should do things like this more often, not just during the holidays but all year long.”

Our Hearts to Your Soles is part of a national event to distribute new and gently worn shoes to needy men, women and children.Since 2004, the organization has expanded and partnered with Soles4Souls and Red Wing Shoes to provide thousands of new shoes across the country.

Additional partners DJ Orthopedics and Finish Line donated shoes and socks for this year’s event in Indianapolis.

“At Dr. Comfort, we believe everyone should have access to comfortable, stylish footwear, and we’re honored to be able to provide our shoes to those in need at the Our Hearts to Your Soles event,” said Joe McClung, general manager at Dr. Comfort.

“We try to treat people here as a whole and the feet are a really a part of it,” said Rick Alvis, CEO of Wheeler Mission. “And the people that come to this facility that are homeless often have feet in bad condition so to have this group here taking care of them is just phenomenal.” Nationwide, there are about 50 sites, and the program provides shoes to close to 5,000 people each year.
