chair’s reportAs Burnaby’s premier business association, the Burnaby Board of Trade has continued to build on our past successes to grow as a member organization, expand and improve our program and event offerings, introduce new benefits and place a larger focus on advocacy efforts. As you will see in the Treasurer’s report, we have once again posted healthy financial numbers, and we continue to operate in a manner that is consistent with our commitment to a triple bottom line.

This year, the Burnaby Board of Trade has revitalized and simplified our Mission and Vision to better reflect our membership and our commitment to serve the business community. Our Mission is to improve business by providing our membership with insightful leadership, advocacy, education and a platform for collaboration. Our Vision is to be the recognized leader in championing an innovative, sustainable, socially responsible and robust business community in Burnaby.

A key component in realizing our new mission and vision is to continue to grow our membership, which we are achieving through the introduction of new Future Member Orientation Sessions. These new sessions allow us to introduce a whole new range of Burnaby businesses to the benefits of membership, from cost-saving opportunities like the Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan, to the multitude of networking events we offer – an important aspect in building and maintaining any successful business. We also continue to offer New Member Orientation Sessions to formally welcome new members and ensure they know how to take full advantage of everything the Burnaby Board of Trade has to offer.

A second key component in achieving our goals is to continue to collaborate with our many community partners and build upon those important relationships. Our partnership with the City of Burnaby remains paramount to our mutual success, and all of us at the Board of Trade and on our Board of Directors appreciate everything the City does to support us and our business community.

We also owe much of our success to the hard work of the BBOT staff, our many volunteers who provide time and expertise on our various committees and at events throughout the year, and of course to our whole membership who together provide a formidable united voice on issues that matter to businesses in Burnaby. Thank you all for your continued support of the Burnaby Board of Trade.

Page 2: annual report 2014 - Burnaby Board of Tradebbot.ca/wp-content/uploads/AnnualReport2014_D1.pdf · Leza Muir, Chair, BBOT chair’s report As Burnaby’s premier business association,

As Treasurer for the Burnaby Board of Trade, I am pleased to present the Audited Financial Statements, as prepared by Kanester Johal, Chartered Accountants, for the year ended December 31, 2013.

The Burnaby Board of Trade experienced strong financial performance and cash management in 2013. Net Revenues grew by 9.7%, in part due to a 6% growth in Membership revenue. Membership revenues continue to be the greatest source of net revenue for the Burnaby Board of Trade, accounting for 50% of its overall net revenues. We thank the membership for your ongoing support and we continue to strive to provide the highest level of value to our business community.

Functions such as the Burnaby Business Excellence Award Gala and the Christmas Luncheon represent 22% (2012 -20%) of net revenue collected and we would also like to thank all the attendees and corporate sponsors for their generous contributions and support in making these events such a success. The Burnaby Board of Trade continues to work closely with the City of Burnaby on the Economic Development Strategy and we thank the City for their financial support.

Due to the prudent management of both direct costs and expenses, in combination with the increase in revenue streams, the

Burnaby Board of Trade reported a bottom line excess of revenue over said costs of $56,044. This has allowed the Board to build its cash position as at December 31, 2013 to $396,954 (2012 - $358,838).

The Audit and Finance Committee continues to assist the Executive in managing and developing administrative and financial controls and policies to ensure financial information is relevant, reliable and accurate, the Board’s assets are safeguarded and recorded, and the risks of today’s business environment are prudently managed.

In closing, I would like to thank the Executive and staff for their hard work throughout the year, and, as well, I thank the members of the Audit and Finance Committee for their time and contributions to the Board.

Sincerely,

Dirk Odenwald, CPA, CGATreasurer

chief executive officer’s reportAs noted in the Chair’s Report, this past year has been a busy one for the Burnaby Board of Trade. We have seen strong growth and expansion in most of what we do, from the services and benefits we provide, to the sixty plus events we offer annually. Our advocacy efforts have increased, our signature programs are developing rapidly, and as a result our membership is growing and becoming more engaged.

A great source of pride for us at the BBOT has been the development of our Pledge for a Sustainable Community program. Last year we transformed this modest sustainability resource into a robust and dynamic environmental platform which organizations from all across the Lower Mainland – including ourselves – can use for guidance, inspiration, and an opportunity to showcase their commitment to a more environmentally sustainable community. We have great plans for continuing to expand and roll out this program for the benefit of businesses everywhere.

We are also very proud of our Access Student Career Development Program, which is just wrapping up its second year. While still in its infancy in many ways, Access has been an extremely valuable tool for senior level post-secondary students to build professional relationships and prepare themselves to enter the workforce as Burnaby’s next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs. We have tremendous support for this program through SFU and the Beedie School of Business, the BCIT School of Business, and Douglas College, who have all shown great foresight in recognizing that the future of Burnaby depends on growing strong local talent with a connection to this community.

Of course, beyond the future we must also live in the present,

which is why the Burnaby Board of Trade has been advocating strongly on issues that are affecting businesses now. From our concern over the Multi-Materials BC regulations, to our support for the local film and television industry, we are doing our part to ensure sensible solutions for the benefit of everyone in this community.

We have also made a point of rewarding our loyal BBOT members for continuing to support the work we do. Members now receive a free subscription to Business in Vancouver as part of their membership, plus we are offering new and improved services like the First Call HR hotline and First Data merchant services. Members can also take advantage of our online directory enhancement package, and our new business resources tab on bbot.ca offers invaluable advice on starting and financing a business, and on engaging in international business.

To ensure our members are better informed of the work we are doing, we are now sending out regular “on your behalf” reports highlighting recent activities, plus we have completely redesigned our newspaper; Burnaby Business News (BBN) is circulated at least five times per year with the Burnaby Now.

While we will always strive to perform better, these highlights amount to just some of our achievements this year, a fact which I hope makes our members proud. I would like to thank our Board of Directors – current and outgoing – for all their guidance and hard work over the past year, and thank you to the entire membership for providing us with our mandate to serve.

Sincerely,

Paul Holden, CEO & PresidentBurnaby Board of Trade
