THE 2013 BOOK WEEK THEME WAS CHAMPIONS READ Ms Chan was inspired by a book titled Millie's Marvellous Hat by Satoshi Kitamura, Together with with years 1-3 she made Champion Hats. Years 1-3 then showed off their marvellous hats at the culminating Reading Wave activity. Years 4 & 5 designed their own Champion Reader avatars and Year 6’s created book trailers of their

favourite picture books. Years 1 and 2 then brought their IPads to the library and scanned QR codes to view the book trailers. The trailer books became very popular!

Other Book Week activities included Book Quiz competitions, Author visits and Read Across the College where secondary students were paired with primary students to read together. The culminating activity saw the whole primary school out on the basketball court, dancing to “Gotta Keep Reading”. Year 12 students, organized by Jacklyn Chan, choreographed and led the wave.

Author Visits Sarah Brennan visited on 11th April 2013 to read her latest book "The tale of Sybil Snake". Yr 2-6 participated in 4 sessions. Sarah also met with one of the Year 2 classes and performed a little drama with the students.

Susan Eaddy, a clay artist and illustrator visited on 15th April 2013. She also conducted a mini clay art workshop with our Year 1 students in studio time which was a direct connection with their Unit of Inquiry.

Ronny Mintjens, author of More Than Just a Game, shared his love of professional sports and exotic cultures by presenting his experiences playing and coaching professional football in Africa during a March visit to RCHK.

An Author for Young adults, Michael Pryor spoke to Years 9 & 10 about his

series which are popular in Australia. The steampunk genre mixes historical setting with magic for something new.

Achievements

by Shirley, Heather & Andrea Teacher Librarians

Online Resource Access Thanks to Azadi Saryev @azawaza, and Dianne McKenzie, previously from Discovery College for sharing their online library resources management application with us. We have been able to place all our paid online resources in one location, along with the best of those freely available. Resources are organised into 3 categories, PYP, MYP/DP and Staff. Usernames, passwords and descriptions of each resource are available after logging into the site. We are thrilled with how easy this has made access to our online resources.   Wheelers/Dawson e-books The Library  is beginning to develop an e-book collection

with two distinct purposes. With the addition of Dawsonera we hope to satisfy

needs of our DP students, while Wheelers e-books target the more recreational needs of our younger and middle year students. iPads

Year 1 and 2 students were introduced to iPads and taught how to search the Olly library catalogue. E-Books were downloaded to provide another reading experience for students.

AROUND THE LIBRARY

Year 2 students love searching for favourite book titles via the iPad

What a comfy spot to curl up with a good book

RESEARCH MODEL: TO SUPPORT INQUIRY

Initiative Our Teacher Librarians are working towards creating a research model that can be

Years 1-13. This is a work in progress and needs discussion and agreement between the Primary and Secondary faculties. Expect to

hear more about this in 2013-14.

Professional resources relocation

The teacher professional collection was moved to the

with catalogues for teacher planning. This has provided meeting and planning space for Teachers and more space for students in the Primary Library.

Self-checkout Thanks to the support of RAPT we were able to purchase a self-checkout machine to allow for increased borrowing access for classes in Years 4 to 6.  Students are excited about using the self-checkout machine. Its use helps students to development their self-management skills in the library and allows more classes to borrow. RAPT continues to support the LIRC by donating proceeds from its second-

hand uniform sales. This year we received over $20,000 which will be used for acrylic display shelves, and expansion of our e-book collection. Secondary Logo

audience and colour scheme

with the help of parent and eco-artist Teresa Guttensohn and graphic designer Jason Dufty. It was installed on acrylic and hangs in the entrance to the secondary library.

SENIOR STUDENTS

Reading in all shapes and formats, what great roll models!

Making good use of their space and staying “connected”.

SELF-CHECKOUT: I CAN DO IT MYSELF!

Students enjoy learning how to check-out their own books and being independent in the library.

Playing the Dewey game.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

12 students in Year 5 & 6 participated in the Battle of the Books competition this year. In May, the team travelled to Kellett School and competed against Kellett School, International School Foundation and Kennedy School in

Although we did not win, every member enjoyed the experience, engaged in reading and worked as a team.

Secondary Library Space Thanks to advice from @Kevinnah_Hennah (Library consultant),  we lowered the height of Library shelves and added full-length slatwall to Bayends for increased Display area. Signage was added to the external door and windows to highlight the Secondary Library presence from outside. As a backdrop to the circulation counter we hung a print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, taken from the woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. To complement the look we added two large photographs of a Hong Kong Banyan Tree, taken by Yr 12 student, Tia Guttensohn to the Library columns. Tables and chairs were updated with new ergonomically designed chairs that move with the user and provide a pressure free

creating large or small group spaces.

EasyBib The LIRC introduced this new information literacy tool to support students in becoming more effective and organized researchers.  With EasyBib students can take notes, create in-text citations, build a bibliography and much more.

Collaboration, Teaching, Inquiry, Learning

Collaboration with year levels has been really successful this year due to the highly valued and well utilised collaborative planning time.

PYP Year 1-2 iPads have been widely used in the lower primary this year.

Year 1 & 2 learned to search the Olly library catalogue. Lower primary students enjoyed reading e-books and accessing extra resources.

Year 1 - students worked together to create a book about their class, they were proud to be authors and illustrators. The fun Dewey Game was widely played in the primary to familiarise with the Dewey

Year 1-3 enjoyed their library visits as they experienced different ways of storytelling and story reading. Year 3 - Research skills & ICT lessons were integrated in classrooms to support the unit of inquiry of Who We Are. Topics included using Britannica, Oliver advance search, keyword search

strategies and viewing

Year 4 - Building on Yr 3 foundation skills, students in Year 4 extended their practice of previous knowledge and skills to become more advanced researchers. In addition, they also learnt information evaluation skills. Year 5 - learnt the concepts of academic honesty, copyright and referencing in How We Express Ourselves. These are important essence for preparing their PYP exhibition in Year 6. Year 6 - were introduced to

reliable articles on Child Welfare.  We covered non-

and note-taking and then moved into inquiry skills such as quoting, paraphrasing and citing sources properly.  We created puzzles using economic vocabulary, before plunging into books, websites, newspapers and databases to

exhibition topics.  the year by writing a short Transition story - from our

old selves.

MYP English classes in Years 7-10 visited the library regularly this year.   Students practiced public speaking by giving Book Talks - sharing a plot synopsis, relating the story to an Area Of Interaction and discussing which Learner

represent.   Research skills were taught during humanities, science or English classes.  Students practiced evaluating web sources for reliability and bias, using EasyBib for creating bibliographies and

way around our new database page and paraphrasing or summarising their research using their own words.   Year 7 and 9 classes participated in Literature

6 students choose to read the same book and have discussions about the characters, plot, author’s motivation and the stories’ relevance to their own lives.   Year 8 classes participated in Genre Literature Circles where groups read from the same Genre (e.g. historical

discuss similarities and differences.

Year 10 classes began the year with orientation, learning what the library has to offer, returned every few weeks to exchange books and also researched the Russian Revolution while reading Animal Farm.   Yr 11 classes accessed the Library during English classes when they could. Due to the curriculum demands of the MYP access was irregular. They used Goodreads to keep an online reading log and monitor current and future reads.

DP Yr 12 students received an introduction to the Extended Essay, learning how to access databases and citation tools such as EasyBib. The new online resources page was promoted at every opportunity. Many teachers used the Turnitin anti-plagiarism tool to monitor and teach students how to avoid plagiarism. The EasyBib note taking tool was also promoted to assist students in managing research, note taking and outlining of assignments.

VOLUNTEERS

Parent Volunteers, Library Monitors, Community & Service

Community and service is an integral part of

student’s and parent’s lives at RCHK. Students

develop greater awareness and concern for the

needs of their community while developing new

and worthwhile skills. The library monitor

programme was extended to Year 4 this year

as requested by students. There were over 50

library monitors from Year 4 to 6 who

frequently helped out in the library. They

contributed 300 service hours. 31 students

Service. In addition, 26 Yr 10 & 11 students

contributed over 200  hours of service in the

Library. From processing books, to the creation

of movies and book trailers to be run on the

LCD

 LCD screens, Yr 10 & 11

contributed in many ways.

Parent volunteers also

contributed 150 hours in the

library. This is a

phenomenal effort and we

really appreciate and value

the volunteer hours that

contribute to making our

Library one of the best in

Hong Kong.

Secondary loans include English texts, literature circle titles and personal loans. There is a dramatic drop in borrowing from Yr 9 - 13. Perhaps as the demands of the IB curriculum

Yrs 7 & 8 who are bought to the Library by their English teachers to participate in Literature Circles, have much higher borrowing levels. This is something to be improved on next year, can we extend loan numbers for Yr 9?

Looking back, looking forward It’s been a super year with so

many achievements that have

made student and staff access to

resources even more easily

accessible. We have carefully

considered the redevelopment of

the secondary library space to

better meet the needs of our

expanding school population. Red

Door will be relocating to their own

purpose built space by Christmas

2013. As the Library has been

allocated their vacated space,

planning has begun on how best to

provide for Diploma and MYP

students. We are looking forward

to putting these plans into action

next year. Furniture will need to

be sourced and ordered.

We continue to develop our e-

book resource collections and

this will be an ongoing focus

for development in the future.

We farewell Mrs Heather

Norman who heads back to the

US with her family and to

another Library position. We

look forward to welcoming Mrs

Dianne McKenzie current

Head of Library at Discovery

College. Dianne brings a

wealth of knowledge and

expertise and we are excited

at the prospect of her joining

our dynamic team.
