HistoryThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania has a long history in Scran-ton. Our Club was founded in 1899 as the Boy’s Industrial Association (BIA). The BIA was located in the basement of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. From its inception, the organization was non-sectarian and inter-racial in membership and administration. In 1906, we joined a growing federation of youth organizations, which later went on to become the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In 1926, the organization moved into larger facilities at the corner of Mulberry Street and Adams Avenue, and was dedicated with a new corporate title, “Boys’ Club of Scran-ton”. The organization continued to grow and thrive in the city. In response to social developments and recognizing a strong local need for services

offered to girls, the Club opened its doors to girls in a pilot program in 1981. That first year, 225 girls became members, and the program was a huge success. In October of 1985, we changed our name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Scranton. In 2000, the organization once again expanded services, adding extension sites throughout Luzerne County. In response to this regionalized approach, we changed names again to be more reflective our new service area. We became the Boys & Girls Clubs of North-eastern Pennsylvania. In 2006, our organi-zation was honored at the National Centen-nial celebration of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for being one of the fifty founding members in the Country. Since 1899, many things have changed, but many more have remained the same.

Today, some 1,000 boys and girls, ages six to eighteen years old, take advantage of the programs, activities, and services provided by our agency at our full-service central unit in Scranton and our extension sites throughout Luzerne County. Our Core Promise to Our Members:To provide a safe, positive, and nurturing place and to have a significant impact on their lives. Our Core Promise to Our Donors and the Community:To uphold high ethical standards in all ar-eas, especially in overseeing our finances, reporting data on our membership, being good stewards of the donor dollar and rep-resenting ourselves to the public.

We are proud to announce our 2011 Youth of the Year… Joseph Evans! In the Youth of the Year Competition, four teen members participated and com-peted against each other for scholar-ship monies to an institute of higher education. All the participants were judged on family, school, community, Boys & Girls Club involvement, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. After writing a stellar essay and being interviewed by a panel of volunteer judges in our community, Joseph was awarded a scholarship to an institute of higher education of his choice. The judges included (l-r) Elizabeth Balduino Nagy, Pennstar Bank; Peter Danchak, PNC Bank; and Bridget Orue, Wayne Bank. “If nothing else, I took away from the experience how much the Club has been an important part of the students’ adoles-cence. It was moving to hear how having a safe place to go after school and having a strong mentor has shaped who they are as young adults. It was obvious that the Club has given them self confidence which was apparent in the way they all answered their questions, and it was a delight to hear them describe what goals they were interested in pursuing after high school,” explained Bridget Orue, Wayne Bank com-mercial loan assistant. After the judging,

guest speaker Maureen McGuigan, deputy director of arts and culture, Lackawanna County, shared with the group why higher education is a wise choice to make after high school graduation. A major benefit of being named a Youth of the Year is having the opportunity to compete against other Pennsylvania Youth of the Year winners in another state-wide competition held in Harrisburg. A few weeks later Joseph visited Harrisburg for the state competition with his family, Board President John Kramer Jr. and Club Execu-tive Director Tricia DiBiasi Thomas After spending a few hours preparing, Jo-seph was interviewed by another panel of volunteer judges and representatives from

the state of Pennsylvania. These judges spent time getting to know Joseph and asked what winning the Northeastern Pennsylvania Youth of the Year meant to him. Tricia DiBiasi recalled, “Joe did a wonderful job representing our Club. I was very impressed at how well mannered he was when rubbing elbows with our local government officials. We are all very proud of Joe!” After the competition, all of Penn-sylvania Youth of the Year nominees

from the various Clubs throughout the state got to know each other in a casual setting. Having to get up early the next day, the teens called it an early night so they were fresh for the legislative breakfast the next morning where they would meet with their state government officials. Joseph had the opportunity to spend some time chatting with Senator John Blake and Stephanie Dicks, a representative from PA Representative Kevin Murphy’s office. Joseph enjoyed the face time with his local government officials. Currently Joseph is a senior at West Scran-ton High School where he hopes to attend East Stroudsburg University in the fall. He is planning on majoring in Communica-tions, focusing on journalism.

Letter from the OfficialsDear Friends of the Club, When we develop our Annual Report, we are given the opportunity to reflect back over the past year and review all that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania has done for this great community. We have con-ducted programs, raised funds and so much

more. But, what is really the most important thing we have done? We think it is basic… we have been here! We have kept our “LIGHTS ON AFTER SCHOOL” to a group of local children and teenagers who really need us. In many communities, boys and girls are left to their own de-vices and to find recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. That is not the case in Northeastern Pennsyl-vania. In our community, young people know someone cares about them. The Club shows them this everyday by keeping our “LIGHTS ON AFTER SCHOOL”. The Club offers that and more. We are not only just a place to be, but also a place to participate in a plethora of programs

and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Our Club is a safe place to learn and grow, all while having fun. It is a place where great futures are started each and every day. Please allow us to say THANK YOU! So many people just like you have made it possible for us to do our important work and keep our “LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL”. Whether a volunteer, a donor, or a community partner, rest assured that you have done your part. Whatever piece you may have played in working with us, it is all significant. We appreciate your dedication to the chil-dren we serve, and your investment in our community. Going forward, no matter how you participate, you can assist us in helping young people reach their full potential. We ask that you join us in helping kids find their path to a great future. Please remain our partners in this important work as you con-tinue to help us keep our “LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL”!

Ups and Downs of the Fiscal Year Many great programs and activities took place throughout 2010 and 2011. Our usual After School and Summer Day Pro-grams served hundreds of disadvantaged children during the out of school time keeping them safe and out of trouble. Here is a quick overview:

• Over 1,000 children were served through our After School and Summer Day Camp Programs • An average of 250 members dropped in daily and took advantage of the programs and activities

• Kids visited our sites approximately 61,250 times throughout the year in both Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties

• Club members spent over 40,000 hours doing homework, receiving tutoring and learning computer skills during the course of the school year • The Club served almost 34,000 meals and snacks to our Club members through-out the year

• Our Fine Arts Program, which includes digital photography and visual arts, provided hands-on art experience to 262 Club members • A new program offered, the Dance Program, instructed 50 Club members in Salsa, Ballroom, Meringue, and a variety of other dance genres

• Our Teen members, ages 13-18, spent a total of 840 hours in the Teen Room

• 1,543 Club members attended our spe-cial events, including Thanksgiving, Holi-day Celebration, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July and Halloween As one can see many great things took place at the Club in 2010-2011. We did, however, experience deep sad-ness. We are sad to report that we lost two of our beloved board members this year: Hank Belin IV & Jerry Klein. Both Hank and Jerry were long standing board members who put in countless hours of hard work and enthusiasm to help spread the word about our organization. They also both helped raise thousands of dollars for the Club. They will be greatly missed by our entire Boys & Girls Club Fam-ily, but most especially, by our staff and board who had the honor and privilege of learning from them and working with them the most. For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Hank, he was born in Scranton, grew up in the Abington’s and served in the U.S. Army. He joined the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Com-pany in 1959 and worked as a financial representative for 47 years until his retire-ment. Hank was a proud, enthusiastic and

involved member of the Board of Direc-tors since 1962, serving on many commit-tees. He was the founding Co-Chair of the ONE Campaign. In 2007, Hank was named as one of the Club’s 2007 “Champions of Youth”.

For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Jerry, he was a proud and active member of the Board of Directors, served with Hank as Founding Co-Chair of the ONE Cam-paign, and was also hon-ored as one of the Club’s 2007 “Champions of Youth”. Jerry spent two years in the Pacific theatre as a medical

corpsman in the Navy.

After graduating from college, he and his father operated K & K Auto Parts for many years. At the time of his passing, Jerry was a financial advisor

at 1st Financial Services Inc. in Dunmore. Even though Hank and Jerry don’t have a physical presence at the Club anymore, their memories, efforts and love for children will be re-membered for many years to come.
