Dear Friends,
First and foremost, we want to express our sincere gratitude for your commitment to the students we serve. Although there is little doubt that the current economic climate is challenging for any organization, Supplies for Dreams made great strides forward in capital improvements last year thanks to your generosity.
In 2009, Supplies for Dreams made progress in several key areas. We: •SuccessfullyenactedtheDreamDriveprogram,bringing necessary school supplies into the hands of 457 students— exceeding our initial projections by over 400 percent. •InauguratedtheDreamMentorsprogramanditssupporting programs in four schools across the CPS. •Establishedpartnershipswith29corporationsand organizations, nationally and locally. •LaunchedtheBooksBenefitprogram,whichinonemonth donated over 650 books to the Chicago Youth Centers. •Greatlyexpandedthescopeandcapacityofourorganization and programs by increasing staff size to 25. This annual report includes details about these and other accomplishments,financialstatementsofouroperations,andshowshow your investment in Supplies for Dreams’ students has a lasting impact on them, their families, and their communities.

Public Speaking Workshop Builds Skills and Confidence
TheDreamMentorscommitteesponsoredapublicspeakingseminaratKenwoodAcademyHighSchool.NealSales-Griffin,formerpresidentofNorthwesternUniversityAssociatedStudentGovernmentandformerChicago Public School student, was on hand to give a presentation to about30students.Mentorsledsmallgroupsofstudentsthroughworkshops to help them express their thoughts and engage an audience.
Books Benefit Program Donates Hundreds of Books
SuppliesforDreams’newestprogram,BooksBenefit,donatedover650bookstoChicagoYouthCenters,markingasuccessfulfirstyear.BooksBenefitstrivestobringliteracydirectlytothestudentsandschools by providing needed children’s books and resource books. BooksBenefitwillcontinuetocollectanddistributebookstotheCPS.

Field Trip to the Field Brings Two Schools Together
The Supplies for Dreams chapter at New Trier High School inWinnetka,IL,andstudentsatEnricoTontiMiddleSchoolparticipatedinanacademicfieldtriptotheFieldMuseum.Students engaged in activities ranging from name-games to full scavenger hunts within the museum, and while learning all about what the museum has to offer, they quickly becamenewfoundfriends.Afterthefieldtrip,theNewTrierstudentsdecidedtoinvitetheEnricostudentsuptoWinnetka, for a day of fun activities and a tour of the school.

Program Highlights
TheDreamMentorsprogramtookagiantstepforward with the inauguration of a brand new program at Kenwood Academy High School on the city’s south-side. Through a partnershipwithForMembersOnly,astudentgroup based at Northwestern University, and withPAECEfromtheUniversityofChicago,mentors have been going down biweekly to supporttheKenwoodBrotherhood--apeer-basedmentoringprogram.Mentorsandstudents have been participating in discussions, workshops, and in the near future, academic tutoring.
Current Initiatives
Fiscalyear2010isofftoagreatstartwiththeinauguration of a new mentoring program at Von Steuben Academy. The program will match a Supplies for Dreams mentor with a Von Steuben student.10studentswillreceiveweeklyacademictutoring and mentoring as well as college preparation.DreamMentorsDirectorMeganMcPhilimybelievesthattheVonSteubenprogram will serve as the model for other Supplies for Dream mentoring programs. McPhilimysays,“It’sessentialtostartwithfreshman and pair them up with a mentor who can guide them and motivate them to graduate high school and attend college. At Von Steuben the mentoring and tutoring components will engage students in both academic and social focuses to better prepare them for the challenges ahead.”

Thanks to our donors and friends we were able to provide supply packages to 445 Chicago Public School students and provide 25 classrooms with classroom supplypackages.100studentsatVonHumboldtElementarySchooleachreceived individualized backpack packages with school supplies while 345 students being served by the Chicago Youth Centers received enough supplies to last the whole school year.

For Megan, Helping Others is a Duty
MeganMcPhilimybeganatSuppliesforDreamsinthefallofherfreshman year at Northwestern University. Having volunteered with anothernonprofitorganization,RoomtoRead,sheisnostrangertotheimportance of providing educational opportunities to underpriviledged youth.
WithinherfirstyearatSuppliesforDreams,MeganhasaccomplishedasignficantamountforanyindividualhavingservedonboththePublicRelationsCommitteeandtheDreamMentorsCommittee.Shehashelped establish a partnership with various schools within the Chicago PublicSchoolsystemandbenefitednumerouschildrenwiththecreationand implementation of a Supplies for Dreams curriculum. Recognizing herhardworkanddedication,theboardwelcomedMeganasthenewDreamMentorsDirectorandwillcontinuetodevelopmentoringandexchange programs within the Chicago Public Schools.
For David, Supplies Allows Him To Explore
InfallofDavidDeJong’ssophmoreyearatNorthwesternUniversity,hebegan his work as a Public Relations Committee member for Supplies for Dreams. David believes in the importance of Supplies for Dreams’ mission to improve educational achievements in the Chicago Public Schoolsandjoinedtheteamwithaspecificgoalinmind.
Withinthelastyear,Davidhassucceededincreatingtwoshortfilmsthatdemonstrate the importance of education and how Supplies for Dreams intends to alleviate problems within the Chicago Public School system. Asanavidlongboarder,hecreatedandcoordinatedBoardingforEducation,aneventwhichbroughttogethervariousstudentswholongboard from around the Chicagoland area to raise awareness about Supplies for Dreams while boarding around downtown Chicago. Further down the road, David hopes to create a longer documentary that provides a more in-depth look at the Chicago Public School system and its students.
