President·s Message This past year¶s achievements serve as another great example of the benefit the Foundation is in the community. Engaging the business community and other community organizations while serving parents, students, teachers, and schools across the Edgewood area school district is a true reflection of how we are fulfilling our motto ± Building Partnerships ~ Achieving Dreams. None of the programs that we have implemented to support the growth of our youngsters, engage parents into learning and help student¶s achieve their educational best would be possible without the partnerships we have developed. You will find several examples of exceptional programs in this annual report for which we are proud and excited. They represent a few of the opportunities the Foundation has provided to support student achievement and postsecondary success. Parent Academy¶s at each of the Edgewood area schools engaged students and parents into learning opportunities to improve homework skills, set goals for increased learning and take ownership in their education. The SMILE Youth Leadership Academy builds upon those skills in addition to facilitating a behavior of self respect and respect for the people around them. Strong leaders in the community begin with an understanding of how one¶s personal actions and beliefs can have a positive or negative impact on their own personal achievements and the success of the community in which they live. Building a community of learners occurs by embracing all the assets that exist in a community. We believe we have made great strides toward that goal. Deb Merlock ANNUAL REPORT 2008 MISSION The Greater Edgewood Education Foundation is a partnership of diverse community members who will build community partnerships that will raise public awareness, pride, and support for the quality of education in the Greater Edgewood Area Schools and enhance educational opportunities for its students. SMILE – YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The 3rd annual youth leadership academy was held at Harford Glen as a three day overnight retreat. Forty students from Edgewood Middle and Edgewood High School participated in leadership workshops facilitated by Maryland Leadership Workshop. The students learned about diversity, self awareness, communication and presentation skills, and they set personal goals. They planned and presented a program at the end of the retreat for their parents, giving them an overview of what they learned for these three days. And for an extra bit of fun the students had a campfire, roasted marshmallows and performed skits and sing-a-longs. It was a great way to spend three days in the summer. Once the students participate in the youth leadership academy, they become SMILE Alumni and take part in additional leadership retreats throughout their school career. There are 150 alumni. The students had a wonderful experience at Harford Community College. They had an opportunity to tour the campus, sit in on classes, have lunch in the Globe Café and play “I’m Smarter than a College Student.” In January, they visited the Maryland State Legislature, sponsored by Senator Nancy Jacobs. They had a great experience sitting in seats where Senators vote on legislation.

PARENT ACADEMY’S Parent’s involved in their child’s education is the number one factor in their child’s educational achievement. GEEF provided parent workshops at each of the Edgewood area schools focusing on strategies and resources to assist students in learning how to set goals at home and at school. Parent’s and children created goal charts to teach them how to structure their home activities and homework completion. Teaching student’s goal setting strategies in elementary school teaches students to take ownership of their education and recognize their path toward postsecondary opportunities. The workshops were planned in partnership with Harford County Public schools. The second parent workshop was on Financial Planning for College to assist parents and students in beginning in their early educational years the importance of taking rigorous courses and working at their best for optimal grades in order to secure scholarship dollars for their college education. Attendees received free homework tool kits and variety of other tools for learning. The workshop was provided by APG Federal Credit Union.

BUSINESS AFTER HOUR STUDENT ART EXHIBITION SHOW AND SALE The Student Art Exhibition is an annual event that highlights the artistic talents of the students in Edgewood Area Schools. All types, forms and shapes of artwork are contributed from students in each of the Edgewood Area Schools. The artwork is enjoyed in a business networking environment and bids are placed on each piece throughout the evening. The person with the winning bid takes home an outstanding piece of artwork which they can display in their home or their business. Attendees enjoyed a light meal with wine and a variety of hors’doeurves. The proceeds from this event benefit scholarships for Edgewood High School students.

FRANKLIN L. TULL MEMORIAL 5K RUN AND 1 MILE WALK Building community and raising scholarship dollars for Edgewood High School students is a wonderful way to celebrate the life of Mr. Frank Tull, a 30 – year educator and principal of William Paca/Old Post Road, who unexpectedly passed away while opening for another school year. Over 200 people attended the event and raised $7000 scholarships. Trophies were awarded to top runners and William Paca/Old Post Road took home the team trophy. Congrats!

COLLEGE PATHWAYS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS One of the goals of the Greater Edgewood Education Foundation is to award every student graduating from Edgewood High School a scholarship to a postsecondary institution of learning. This year, GEEF is proud to award scholarships to eight graduating seniors. They attended a variety of colleges: Salisbury University, Harford Community College, and Towson University to name a few. The total scholarship award was $5500 thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters.

Honoring Our Everyday Heroes 4th Annual Gala and Silent Auction Over 150 people representing teachers, principals, business, community, government, parents and students filled the Richlin Ballroom to honor outstanding teachers and applaud our business partners for their dedication to the students in the Edgewood area schools. The event featured open bar, hor d’oeurves, sit down dinner and a silent auction. Guests were entertained by the musical talents of the Edgewood High School Chamber Orchestra led by Ms. Anne Pape. Business Partners were recognized during the event with a plaque presentation commending them for their service to children. After all the guests enjoyed their dinner, Dr. Jackie Haas, Superintendent of Harford County Public Schools, addressed the audience and added her own commendation and admiration for the work teachers do everyday in the classroom. Teachers from each of the Edgewood area schools were nominated as Everyday Heroes in their schools and one teacher from each Edgewood area school was recognized as an Everyday Hero. They were presented plaques honoring their commitment to our children and a check for $100 to use in their classrooms. Mr. Dion Guthrie, Harford County Council, presented each Everyday Hero a Proclamation from the County Executive and the County Council.
