OUTCOME OF THE SUB COMMITTEES PLAN AT END OF THE YEAR 2010 - 2011

I. RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

Objectives: To encourage teaching faculty to undertake research projects (minor and major)

To disseminate information to the staff about the various schemes for fellowships / scholarships

available.

To initiate a research journal at college level.

A. RESEARCH RELATED PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY STUDENTS UNDER STAFF GUIDANCE

Department of Mass Communication and Extension:-

In the subject of “Research Methodology”, 2 undergraduate researches which were done in 2 groups of 5 students each were guided by Dr. Jennifer Alexander. The topics of research were as follows:

Health hazards of Junk food on adolescence. Problems faced by married working women in the organized sector in Mumbai.

Department of Food and Nutrition:-

A certificate course (15 hour duration) on “Research Methodology and Statistics” was conducted for S.Y. Food and Nutrition students during December 2010 to February 2011.

B. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF STAFF:-

Department of Human Development:-

Dr. Suja Koshy had undertaken research on the topic of “Patterns of Sharing of Emotions of Children and Adolescents”. She also presented a paper on the preliminary findings on the aspect of implications of this knowledge for the counselors” during a conference on “Mental Health and Well being” organized by CMR Bangalore.

Dr. Suja Koshy was invited to be the external referee to assess one MSC. Dissertation in Human Development at PGSR, SNDT University, Mumbai

Department of Food and Nutrition:- Research Guidance Completed for the following areas: • Ms. Parmi Vora and Ms. Neha Gosavi (2010-2011) Body fat percentage in school going

children from high and low socioeconomic strata and its correlation with physical activity and dietary pattern (PGCND-2010).

• Ongoing research of 6 students both from MSC and PGCND.

Dr. Mistry, Dr. Godhia , Dr. Battalwar and Ms. Nigudkar were actively involved in

guiding PGCND students for their research projects.

Dr. Mistry was a member on the Panel of External referees to asses three M.Sc. Dissertation in Food and Nutrition at Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science, Mumbai University, 29th March 2011.

Dr. Mistry and Dr. Meena Godhia were the external referees to assess MSC. Dissertations in Food and Nutrition at PGSR, SNDT University, Mumbai

Dr. Godhia is an expert member for the academic Journal “Research Horizons” by National Institute of Science, Communication and Information Resources.

Dr. Godhia was appointed as a Panelist for students pursuing PhD in Food and Nutrition at Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science, Mumbai University, 26th April 2011.

Dr. Godhia contributed a chapter “Dietary Intake Assessment” in “Methodologies for Fitness Assessment (Eds.) K. Sen Ray, G. Subbulazxmi and M Shubadra, November, 2010, Publishers Ane Books Pvt. Ltd.

Recommendations for 2010 -2011 of activities there in

1. Training for Proposal writing / Publication:

a) Tips for writing a paper for Publication by. Dr. Rekha Singhal, Department of Food Technology, UICT, Mumbai 20th June 2011 (was scheduled for April 2011 ) 3-4 pm organized for staff members.

b) “Writing a term paper by Dr. J Changirani Visiting faculty, New York medical university 17th September 2010 – organized for PGCND Students.

II. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE

Activities of the IQAC (Publicity Committee) 2010-2011

Modified the college Brochure. The college brochure was modified following the changes in the nomenclature and credits of subjects of the departments and reprinted.

The story on home science- was an article written for Education Times the peg of the story was the pros and cons of a home science degree/ diploma. What are the prospects such a degree can offer. Who should do the course and when? The article aims to present a clear picture of why should one pursue this course and what one can expect at the end of it.

Website is a most important medium to reach out to plenty impressively. The exiting website had become redundant and was described as not interesting as per the feedback of the students.

The website also lacked innovative elements like attachment to ‘Facebook’, ‘Twitter’ and ‘Youtube’. Therefore the work of revamping the website began in August 2010 and got completed in June 2011.

Disha, College Exhibition- 8th January 2011 Manager ( Marketing ) of Young Buzz, a educational counselling agency, Mrs. Prabhu, was invited to be the chief guest.

Collaboration with (Young Buzz - educational counselors helped in admission at F.Y) for admission, career fair.

Education counselor – Ms Shaheena Shaikh (May 15th 2011 to July 2011) She counseled

the prospective students and their parents who visited college for inquiries for degree and junior college.

Academic Presentations were held at LILAVATIBAI PODAR SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL (ISC) Santacruz (West) Mumbai. The management of Lilavatibai Podar Senior Secondary School, ISC organized a one day seminar titled ‘Career Opportunities after School’ for Std. X and Std. XI students and parents. The details were as follows:

Day / Date: Saturday, 18 December, 2010 Time: 08:30 am to 01:00 pm Venue: St. Andrews Auditorium, Bandra (West), Next to St. Andrews College.

"Career Fair", for the children of LandTites, was held on 26th May, 2011 between 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, at Multi Purpose Hall, North Block II, Gate No. 1, Powai.

ANY OTHER:

A session on “Tips for Writing a Paper for Publication” by Dr. Rekha Singhal, Department of Food Technology, UICT, Mumbai was planned for April 2011 was conducted on 20th June 2011 for all the teaching faculty of SVT College. This was organized by the Staff Development Committee with guidance from the IQAC Research Committee.

III. SELF FINANCING COURSES

Goals Achieved During the Year 2010-2011:

Detail evaluation and examination pattern for all the courses was prepared.

Guidelines were prepared for uniformity in credits.

Guidelines were prepared for rate of payments to different faculties, refund of fees to drop- outs.

Post graduate diploma in fashion designing and retail Management was started by TAD

dept. in June 2011.

TAQ form was prepared for regular and visiting faculty.

Part B:

1. Activities of your department reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution

Department of Family Resource Management : Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution.

Discussion at the classroom level, regarding responsibilities and rights of being an alert citizen and awareness of actions that should be taken in order to seek redressal in case of any malpractice.

NIRMITEE, the annual exhibition of the Department helps to meet certain goals of the institute by :- • Providing an entrepreneurial opportunity to the final year students by guiding and

encouraging them to conceive entrepreneurial ideas and venture into manufacturing and trading of various items.

• Exhibiting the artistic skills of first year students in creating various decorative room accessories and promoting sales of these accessories.

• Providing a platform to the Interior design students to showcase their talent in

representing residential and commercial interior design schemes.

Department of Food and Nutrition:

To sensitize students to social issues • Community / Extension Services / Activities

Consultancy services offered to Tribal women for the development of ragi based products for sale during Diwali Oct. 2010. It was a part of the rural development programme organised by an NGO – KARH. Staff involved – Ms. Nigudkar, Ms. Mane, T.Y Applied Nutrition Students were activity involved in the project.

Survey on Breast Feeding Practices conducted at ICDS Center, Mangalwadi under the

supervision of Mrs. Madhuri Nigudkar.

Survey on: • Immunization coverage

• Growth trends in children aged 2-6 years at ICDS Centre Mangalwadi and Indiranayar

(Santacruz) under the supervision of Dr. Mistry and Mrs. Nigudkar.

TY Applied Nutrition students were exposed to an Internal, OPD ward of Sion Hospital to observe the antenatal care given to pregnant mothers.

TY Applied Nutrition students were taken to ICDS Centre at Dharavi to observe/ evaluate the ICDC activities.

a) Strengthen Industry : Academic Collaboration

Industry Academic Interface:

A cooking competition on the theme – “ Healthy Sunday Brunch” was conducted on 18th September

2010 in collaboration with Nestle Indian Ltd. and AFSTI.

Cooking competition- Nestle

A “Promotional advertisement pamphlet” competition was conducted on 9th Sept. 2010 which was sponsored by Hexagon Nutrition.

Two workshops entitled:

(a) “Management of Dietetics in Hospitalized Patients”

(b) “Enteral Feeds” were organised by the Department on 11th Feb 2011 and 17th March 2011. The workshops were organised by SVT College in collaboration with Ms. Solly James, Chief dietician, S. L. Raheja and Fortis Hospital.

Activities Related To Research and Publications:

1. Dr Jagmeet Madan is the Principal Investigator of PROJECT MARG (Phase II ) which is a Multicentric School Health Initiative for Medical Education for children/Adolescent for Realistic Prevention of Obesity and Diabetes and for Healthy Ageing, a collaboration of Department of Food and Nutrition, SVT College of Home Science, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai and Almond Board of California, USA. Presently we are in a state of wrapping up Phase I and the pilot project of Phase II is ongoing in 3 private schools of Mumbai.

2. Dr Jagmeet Madan presented a paper on behalf of the MARG team entitled “Dual burden of malnutrition in school going children of different socioeconomic strata of Mumbai city “ in OBESITY-2010 ,the 28th Annual scientific meeting of International Obesity Society USA held on 8-12th of October, 2010 at Sandiego, California, USA. The paper was selected under the track of population studies. She was awarded the UGC Travel grant for registration and travel.

3. Dr. Jagmeet Madan’s contribution in publications related activities: • “Dual Burden of Malnutrition in school going children of different socioeconomic

Department of Human Development: (a) To evolve atmosphere conducive for generating scientific attitude and all round growth

and development: • The Department of HD invited professionals from the field to widen the students’

awareness on various issues related to practical application of knowledge when working with people through sharing of case studies.

(b) To sensitize the students with respect to social issues such as population, illiteracy, status of women, malnutrition, needs of special children etc. • Students of Human Development are taken for visits to old age homes, special schools

to sensitize them to their needs. The talk on Human Rights by Dr. Theodore was also another way to sensitize them to social issues.

(c) To inculcate values related to environment, social harmony, national integration and peace. • Students of Human Development conducted workshops on social issues such as

Rights of Children for the disadvantaged children in the community. This in turn helped them to first get sensitized to these issues and make the community sensitized.

• (d) To provide education which will prepare students professionally and develop

entrepreneurship. • The students of HD department are placed at various renowned centers for their field

work and internship under the guidance of Departmental faculty and professionals from the community

V) Community Outreach: Extension activities: Department organized Non formal education field activities for S.YD III. Students, from the month of June- September 2010, in Y.M.C.A Juhu beach street children project. Field activities were conducted on various topics like:

Celebration of World Literacy Day The World Literacy Day was celebrated in collaboration with Y.M.C.A Juhu, Mumbai, Street Children project, this activity is a part of the subject Non Formal Education. The following activities were conducted.

1. Drawing completion for children. 2. Film 3. Puppet show 4. Exhibition 5. Prize distribution and Hospitality.

The Chief Guest for the programme was Dr. Sunanda Chande former principal of SVT college and our sponsors for the programme was Kaushal Caterers Mr. Vijay Jalan.

Practical of Rural and Urban Community Development Program was conducted for the TY BHSC DIII Students under the guidance of Mrs. Vipra Banerjee and Ms. Aasia Radiowala, From 12/1.2011 to 27/3/2011. Urban Program: Mangelawadi Community, Santacruz (west): The students conducted a survey on 12th January 2011in Mangalwadi Community, Santacruz (west), to identify the felt needs and based on that the extension program was planned. The Urban Community Program began on 12th January 2011 in Mangalwadi Community, Santacruz (west),by mobilizing people by putting up posters for the activities. A street play and a Puppet show was put up by the students on health and hygiene issues for the women. It was highly appreciated. The students conducted four different activities for women and children of Mangelawadi which were useful for them in their day to day life. The activities were conducted every Wednesday for which posters were put up prior to the activity to give an idea to the audience about the activity to be conducted that week. Half activities were conducted in Dutt Mandir and the remaining activities were conducted in

Jivdani Mandir, in the mangelawadi. These activities were conducted under the guidance of experts from various fields.

The first activity was conducted 19th January 2011 under the expert Dr. Kirandeep Pruthi (counsellor) from SNDT University with group members Nikita Narvekar, Nikita Padate, Upasana Patel. She conducted body relaxation and stress relief activity where she made the audience perform some exercises and she also had an interactive session where in the audience discussed about their problems. The second activity was conducted on 19th February under the expert Mrs. Jayeshree from Stree Shakti Kendra NGO with group members Palak Pandey, Apurva Pednekar and Pooja Tanna. She spoke about Bachat Yojana Schemes and entrepreneurship. The third activity was conducted on 23rd February 2011 under the expert Ms. Bhavika Shah from post graduation department of SNDT University with group members Upaasana Aggarwal, Mehzabin Haju, Dhanada Kavle and Zeba Zamindar. She spoke on the causes, effects and the ways and means to prevent diseases like malnutrition and anaemia. She also gave some nutritional recipes and tips on making nutritional food available in their homes. She also distributed the nutritional recipe handouts to the audience. The fourth activity was conducted on 9th march 2011 under the expert Dr. Chitra Nayak (skin specialist) with group members Pooja Shah, Gayatri Mohanty, Alka Soni. She spoke about how to keep your skin good and glowing, reasons for different skin diseases and how get over those skin diseases. After all the four sessions there was a feedback taken through a feedback form. The feedback was good and positive from the audience.

YMCA Centre: Students conducted Intervention Programs at YMCA Centre, Juhu, for the street children in the age group 5years to 16years. The students explored the need of the street children bty speaking to the person –in-charge Mr. Manoj Sonawne and the feedback from the target group. Experts were invited and the following sessions were conducted, Importance of Healthy Diet, Exercise and Fitness, also flower making was taught to them under vocational training. The programmes were highly appreciated by all. Students conducted Intervention Programs at YMCA Centre, Juhu, for the street children. Experts were invited and the following sessions were conducted:

The first session was conducted on 23rd February under the expert Mr. Francis Mcwan, a Medical Representative. He gave information to the children about their dietary intake. The second session was conducted under the expert Dr. Manjeet Kaur Chauhan and Mrs. Himani Malhotra from FRM Department, SVT College. The program was coordinated by the following students, Upaasna Aggarwal, Mehzabin Haju, Dhanada Kavle and Apurva Pednekar. The experts performed exercises with children to keep them stress relief and to keep their body fit and healthy. Their weights were measured. They also distributed biscuits and banana to the children.

The third session was conducted under the expert Ms. Sabina Khan and Ms. Safina Khan from Balkanjibari coordinated by the following students, Zeba Zamindar, Palak Pandey, Pooja Shah and Gayatri Mohanty. They taught the boys to make flowers out of stockings. Every boy made his own flower and this activity would help them in self employment. Rural Program: Students along with the teachers went together for the first rural visit at Ramkrishna Mission Math’s, Sakwar Centre on 2nd February 2011. Students performed Puppet show and street play there. They also visited the agricultural land, studied the biogas plant located at the centre. i. The Department organized a Local seminar on 24th Jan. 2011. The topic was “Colour Blind or Blind to Colour in Marketing” the chief speaker was Mr. Kashyap Nansi. The seminar was organized by the department along with along with Society of Dyers and Colourists ( UK), India wing. It was well attended by corporate members, SDC.

ii. Members, Staff and students of Various colleges, and Staff and students of the college. iii. The department invites a number of industrial representatives for a number of subjects. iv. A number of field visits are organized to orient the students towards the current textile

industry scenario.

National Level Workshop: The College conducted a workshop on “Restructuring of syllabus of Home Science for an Autonomous College” on 6th and 7th of April, 2011. National faculty - Dr Kumud Khanna, Principal, Institute of Home Economics New Delhi. Dr Neelam Grewal, Registrar, Punjab Agricultural University and Dr Bhaskaran, Principal, Ayya Nadar Janki Ammal College (Autonomous),Tamil Nadu were invited. All the staff of different departments of the college and external subject experts participated. The workshop helped to develop a template to work on, for the proposed restructuring of courses to be undertaken in next 2 years in the College

Department of Food and Nutrition: The syllabus of Geriatric Nutrition (Th), was revised to make it practical oriented. Topics such as Functional assessment, services for the elderly, visits to old age homes, scope of gerontology and elder care were included. Department of Mass Communication and Extension: • Subject - Communication Technology (offered in the IV Semester) Major changes were

introduced such as:- Students made a short (2-3 minutes) film shot on handy cam in place of

photographic slides. The experience of Reality show production was given to the students. Making of Jingles (social messages was omitted from the curriculum) Visit to radio stations to understand various technologies involved in radio

Q.18. Community services:

Department of Family Resource Management :

The Dept. of Family Resource Management does not offer courses which are community oriented. We therefore encourage the students to participate in the NSS activities. This year the total enrollment from the department was 92 students (FY,SY,TY)

Department of Food and Nutrition: • Refer Encl.: 1 Department of Human Development: On 6th August' 2010 the T.Y.BSc.(ECCE) students planned and conducted a puppet show named "Chintu, the caterpillar" for the Senior K.G. children of Ramabai Paranjpe Balmandir.

In collaboration with Inner Wheel Midwest, the department of Human Development planned an entertainment programme for the inmates of the “Little Sisters of the Poor, Old age Home”, Mahakali, Andheri on 9th September, 2010. The students interacted with a group of around 60-80 elderly women. This entertainment programme consisted of games, art activities, skits, dance, songs, riddles and jokes planned by the second year students of the department which was specially planned keeping in mind the elderly population, residing in old age homes.

Entertainment programme for the inmates of “Little Sisters of the Poor, Old age Home”Andheri on 9th September, 2010 as part of Elder’s Day celebrations

On 20th September 2010 the T.Y.BSc.(ECCE) planned and conducted a drama on the theme of "Eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi" for the Senior K.G. children of Ramabai Paranjpe Balmandir. The final year students of E.C.C.E. specialisation, Department of Human Development, conducted two sensitization workshops for the Std.V students ( approximately 120 students) of Jasudben M.L. School, Gujarat Research Society, Khar on 1st,3rd and 4th March’11 under

the guidance of Ms. Jasmeet Anand and Ms. Riddhi Savla. The theme for these workshops was: a) Rights of Children: along with the duties accompanying each right.

b) Disadvantaged Children: focussing on orphans and destitutes.

The students of S.Y.BSc.(HD) under the guidance of Mrs. Jain performed two street plays on “Sensitization towards Learning Disabled” and “Sensitization towards Cerebral Palsy” for the VII std.students of “Pupils’s High School” on 17th March ’11.

The T.Y.BSc students specializing in Developmental Counseling under the guidance of Mrs. Jain and Dr. Koshy conducted four intensive workshops on Handling Exam Anxiety, Secrets to good relationships with family and friends, Developing social skills for better interaction and Creative and Critical thinking

This year too, the TY (ECCE) students specially planned a special event called “Buzzers and Flutters” for 45 children of the community in the month of April. The program had developmentally appropriate games for the children along with a puppet show

The department helped organize a fashion show with its NSS Volunteers for the “ Hi- Tech family enrichment foundation for mentally challenged adults. The show was held on 12thjanuary 2011, in Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall, Mumbai.

• Feed back from stakeholders: The stakeholders are students, parents, Board of Studies (BOS) members, Visiting Faculty/Guest Speakers. The following feedback was obtained:-

From Students: In the subject Lighting and Digital Photography for the A. V. Production students at

S.Y. the students expressed their views on the visiting faculty’s teaching methods and wanted more involvement from the faculty to train them in lighting as a feature of photography.

From Parents:

In the Parent –Teacher Association (PTA) meeting held in March 2011, the parents were on the whole satisfied, with an exception of a parent who felt that the department could give more time to their daughter’s tutorials in extra time.

From the Board of Studies Members: (Particularly the student members):

The members attend the BOS twice a year. Its during the discussion they give opinion

and suggestion in designing curriculum. Ms. Sufia made a special mention that more communication / Media Courses should be included in the specialization ‘Social Communication and Media’. She felt that there are more Extension Education course in the 66 credits that have to be completed in the specialization.

our college staff is easily communicates with each other through the Receptionist.

3. All the Senior College Administration work procedure is computerized like : 1. Admission:

a) The details of students enrolled into the F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. we get a proper details of enrolled students.

b) We sort students as per the categories of the enrolled students. c) We sort listed the list of students as per the percentage wise, category wise and

also we can give the details of the students whether it is SVT students or Outsides students.

2. In so many years the college done the Freeships and Scholarships procedure in manually but this year the Government of Maharashtra Law introduced a “Freeship /Scholarship” On Line.

4. Administrative:

All the Inward and Outward procedure is followed through the Office Superintendent through proper protocol.

5. Staff’s filled the request form of the requirement of stationery for the approval of HOD/OS/Principal.

6. In Accounts Department: 1. The college has “Salary Excel” and “Fox fro” Package for salary on line Package for

submitting the salary to Joint Director’s Office. 2. New Accounts Package, Tally 9.2 Version and it is implemented in accounts

department w.e.f. April 2011 till March 2011. Integrated Quick FA Account package was there.

3. Filling systems in accounts department are numbered and coloured so that they can find the file easily.

7. College Excel: a) It is a one programe which is included all the details of admitted student’s in our

college. b) In that the entries is made from the Admission Form. c) This package is easy to send sms to all the students as well as all Teaching and Non-

Teaching staff members in our college. d) In this package we get attendance report of the students. e) The main important feature In this package is that when we enters the students details

in the programme and we will get the all details of the students automatically and also print the Leaving Certificate of the students.

f) In this programme we gave a one USER ID for all the students. In basis of User ID they can allowed to use an “Objective Online Test” .

g) We also provide a USER ID for Teachers in Senior College. They can use it for Time Table. Secondly the teachers get all information about students like attendance, exams marks or personal details: like contact no., address and email.id etc.

h) All the staff members BIRTHDAY WISHES are sent from this package.

Q.32. Activities and support from the Parent-Teachers association all Departments conduct one parents teaching association meeting in per semester:

Department of Food and Nutrition: PTA (TY Students) was clubbed with Career Guidance Seminar on 2nd Feb. 2011. It gave an opportunity for parents to interact not only with teachers but also experts from Academics, Food Industry, NGO’s, Fitness Centers and Hospitals. Department of Human Development: During the year 2010-2011, during the parent-teacher meeting organised for all the students, many of the students of the first year and second year students came for the meeting and discussed the progress of their child with the departmental teachers.

The Disha exhibition and display time was also an opportunity for the parents of T.Y. BSc and S.Y. BSc. students to come and have an informal interaction with the teachers of the department. On this occasion, most of the parental queries were related to further educational and career prospects for the students.

Department of Textiles and Apparel Designing:

We encourage the students to visit a number of Textile and Fashion Trade exhibitions as this helps orient them to current market trends in fabrics, fashion and color.

We also take the students to a number of field visits to show the use of textile and finishing machinery.

We try to provide a hands on teaching experience to the students as almost 70% of our lectures are complemented with practical work.

The department hosts an Annual Exhibition “Kalash”.

The students creative efforts are displayed to industry visitors. Along with the exhibition the department also organizes a sale, where the students are taught to source, manufacture, advertise and sell various fashion products and accessories.

Student Development Activities

Guest speakers were invited for various topics like REBT case studies by Mrs. Sadhana Deshmukh, Elder Abuse by Mrs Anju Jani, Concessions and special provisions for LD students by Rukshana Sholapurwala, Disadvantaged children- Present scenario, concerns and services by Mrs. Anjali Gokarn.

A career orientation programme was organized by the Department of Human Development for the final year students. The first part of this programme took place on 18th December’10 between 1:00 to 3:30pm. Speakers from different fields oriented the students about the prospects of further studies and careers in Human Development. The following fields were discussed:

1. Special Education: Ms. Zainab Azad 2. Counselling Psychology: Mrs. Sravanti Adhikari 3. Career Counselling and School Psychology: Ms. Rachana Tuli 4. Social Work: Ms. Shrushti Bangera

Each of these speakers explained their respective area of study in detail and this was followed by a question-answer session which involved student participation. It proved to be a very rich and informative session for the students. The second part of this programme entailed a lecture by Mrs. Chitra Vadke, faculty, Department of Educational Technology on 25th March’11 between 2:15 and 3:15pm. She enlightened the students about the field educational technology and its prospects.
