Kicking the habit

Ann Smith shares how she quit smoking after six years to protect her unborn baby’s health.

1 I started smoking when I was 23 years old. I was careless, irresponsible and thoughtless.

2 Then I met my husband. We got married a year later. We smoked like a house on fire,

especially at night.

3 I always knew I never wanted to be a mom who smoked. That’s when it began - the

‘weaning period’. I knew I had to start changing my lifestyle.

4 I was scared to stop smoking because I wasn’t sure whether I had the willpower. After getting married, my husband and I began with small lifestyle changes.

5 The first important change was switching to a much lighter brand. It took some time to get

used to smoking what felt like ‘air sticks’, but we soon felt the same satisfaction.

6 Normally, when eating out, we would go for the restaurant’s smoking section. However,

by opting for the non-smoking areas, we immediately kick-started our smoke-free life.

7 Luckily, my new work did not allow smoking on the premises. I worked with high school

children and it was important to present a correct image.

8 My husband and I began trying to conceive in January, so I stopped smoking during the

day. I also stopped smoking in the car. One day when I got home, I took a pregnancy

test, and it came out positive. Until I realised that I was pregnant, I had no reason to quit

smoking.

9 When I look back I’m glad I stopped when I did. Overcoming my nicotine addiction has

reminded me of the faith I have in myself and has given me the strength to challenge

anything that might come my way. [Adapted from Living and Loving magazine (December 2013)]

SPARE A CIGGY, SAVE A LIFE

It is a fact that 90% of smokers began smoking before the age of 21. (Everyday/Every day) almost 3 900 smokers under 18 years of age try their first cigarette. More than

950 of them will become daily smokers. About half of teen smokers will continue

smoking and (dye/die/died/dies) early from a smoking-related disease. Teen

smokers are more likely to have panic attacks, anxiety disorders and depression. One

out of five teens who _____ addicted to cigarettes, smokes 13-15 times a day.

Unfortunately for these teens, smoking can age skin faster. In addition their lungs will not develop fully. This puts them at a higher risk (of/for/on/with) contracting lung diseases. So, next time you come across people smoking, care to share the facts
