Lord’s Acre Sunday

ANNUAL LORD’S ACRE SERVICE IS NOVEMBER 19

For over fifty years the family of Madison United Methodist Church has

celebrated God’s goodness with a service known as The Lord’s Acre.

Starting in the days when Madison was an agricultural community, our

congregation began taking up a special offering at harvest time to be

used for facility needs of our church, such as building expansion, major

repairs, and debt reduction. This has enabled us to focus our regular

budget on our ministry programs. The Lord’s Acre collection will be

used primarily for debt reduction on the new Education Building .

We are blessed this year to have a very special Lord’s Acre Day planned for SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19th. We will

receive a special offering during the morning worship services. That afternoon we will gather for a SERVICE OF

THANKSGIVING at 5:30 P.M. in the Sanctuary. This will be followed by a COVERED DISH DINNER. The

church will provide turkey, dressing, and beverages, and you bring a side dish and/or dessert of your choice. We

invite you all to join us on this special day as we remember the past and anticipate the future.

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity

will result in thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 9:11).

2018 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN UPDATE

We are very thankful for our church’s response this year. Our church fami-

ly has already committed almost as much as we did last year ($1,115,310),

and we have not yet received Commitment Cards from many people who

normally turn one in. With growing ministries and a growing congregation

comes a growing budget, so all commitments are important and needed. If

you haven’t done so, please turn in your card as soon as possible in the of-

fering plate or to the church office. We will update our church through the newsletter in December about the final

numbers for our campaign sometime and then we will also list our 2018 budget and MUMC committee member-

ship in a January newsletter. Thank you again for your faithful response to this year’s campaign so we can contin-

ue to build disciples who serve Jesus Christ.

YOU CAN BE A PART OF CHRIST’S MISSION THRU MUMC IN 2018!

Recently, Bro. Barry challenged us to consider the 5 commitments of discipleship which we make in response to

the love and grace of Christ: Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, & Witness. We invite you to find ways in 2018 to

live these commitments INSIDE the church through Connection Ministry and OUTSIDE the church through Mis-

sions. To let us know how you are interested in living out your commitment to SERVICE and WITNESS, you

are invited to share those interests with your pastors & lay leadership.

If you desire a PAPER FORM, please contact Ben Butler (601-856-6058, or [email protected]). You can also

conveniently submit ONLINE: Connection Ministry (www.madisonumc.org/connection2018) and Missions

(www.madisonumc.org/missions2018). Please do not hesitate to contact Bro. Ben if you want to discuss where

you might best get involved.

WOMEN OF MADISON UMC SERVE IN KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY

The mission of the Kairos Prison Ministry is to “share the transforming love

and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men,

women, youth and their families” to become loving and productive citizens.

Kairos encourages believers in many Christian traditions to be volunteers in this

Christ-filled ministry.

Recently, four of us entered the women’s prison spending several days demonstrating Jesus’ love and for-

giveness. The incarcerated women participated in a variety of activities designed to help them forgive others and

accept Jesus’ love and forgiveness. Through shared meals, prayer, singing, movement activities, talks–including

the witness of team members–group discussions, art and spiritual experiences, the women began to realize their

worth in the eyes of Jesus. By the end of the retreat most were able to admit they had experienced Jesus’ love and

his forgiveness and had developed a feeling of worth not apparent when they arrived at Kairos. During four days

they learned to forgive others and themselves. The Holy Spirit is alive and well at CMCF!

A strength of the Kairos ministry is the continued involvement of volunteers. We work with the women to de-

velop Prayer and Share groups. When they meet, we return to the prison providing a spiritual presence. Our goal

is to help them build a supportive Christian community preparing them to continue on their spiritual journey inside

or outside the prison.

The volunteers also explain Kairos Outside--a ministry for female family members

and friends outside the prison. Outside is similar to Inside Ministry but held in a camp

setting. KO hopes to spiritually strengthen women impacted by incarceration. They

learn they are not alone in the experience, and they support each other. They also learn

how to prepare for the release of their loved one and support her while incarcerated.

Please consider your role in building a Christian community in or outside of prison.

You can volunteer in one of the ministries in a variety of ways: ministries need prayers

and monetary gifts. You may contact Dianna Boring, Harriet Brown, Terry Smith, Patricia Stanfield or Connie

Starkey for information on how to be the hands and feet of God for the women at CMCF and their loved ones.

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENT

Our Staff Parish Relations Committee is delighted to announce that they have hired

Chris Filippou to be our new Director of Technology and Communications. Chris

joined our church family in 2016. Since 2009 he has worked as a graphic designer and

as a website developer. For the last four years, Chris has also run an Internet news/

media website.

Chris will be working in many areas (Audio/Visual needs, church website maintenance,

media presentations, graphic design, etc.). You will soon begin to see him posting most

of our church's announcements on our social media. We are very glad to have church

members posting pictures and videos on our church’s social media; however, we do not

want to flood those feeds with too many posts at one time. We are asking ministry area

leaders to email Chris ([email protected]) with your pictures, video and announce-

ments so that he can space them out so that your posts will get proper and sole attention

from the church. Let’s all welcome Chris to our staff!
