DEBBIE’S DARING ADVENTURE IN NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR In October, several of us took a walk-about into the neighborhood around our church. We just wanted to meet people and be neighborly. We also wanted to see what God would show us. We followed Jesus’ in-structions in Matt. 10:9-10 when he sent the disciples out. We didn’t take anything extra to give out nor did we take an agenda to invite, nudge, or coerce someone to come to our church. We weren’t trying to follow an all-too-familiar way of church outreach in engaging in long, in

-the-home visits with tracts. We wanted to just meet peo-ple where they were in their lives. Walking the journey of

faith together starts with a step out-of-our-comfort zone and a “hello”. My partner and I had a long talk with an elderly lady get-ting her porch fixed and several moms watching children play nearby. Anyone can do a walk-about in a grocery store, down the street, or at a ball game. All

of us can be neighbors. Just say “hi”, really listen to what comes forth, and trust God to take it from there.

What a week it has been. Thank you for allowing me to participate in the Clergy Retreat and the Walk to Emmaus. Both events were inspiring and worth the time.

The Clergy Retreat started off with a review of the Birkman evaluation that I took several months ago. It didn't point out anything I didn't already know but it was a good "refresher" for me. Believe it or not it revealed that I like to be around people - go figure. It also revealed that I like to be outside more than inside - see you on the golf course (I'm supposed to spend more time outside). It also revealed some other attributes that you already know - like I am not a detailed ori-ented person. I get impatient at stop lights and in long lines. Just little stuff like that.

Dana Robert was the featured speaker. Her specialty is the mission field. It was refreshing to find out that while United Methodism may be losing members in the States, it is gaining big time in other places around the world. Did you know that we (the US) are considered a mission field! We need to do something about that. I will be addressing that in the future through sermons and mission opportunities.

Emmaus was awesome. We had several people attend: T.C. Hamilton, Jerry Voss, Chad Bronson, Mike Gilmer, Benny Johnson, Odice Jenkins, and Ace Hamner. David Larkin, Craig Roberts and I represented the church as team members - Dan Hoke was on the team as an unofficial representative of the church. Please take time to talk to these men about their experience. They all have a story to tell. What a great story they have too. The Holy Spirit was truly present and active with and in all of the men on the walk.

Thank you for your support of the Emmaus community and thank you for allowing me the time to do this sort of thing. It is refreshing to spend 72 hours away from the phone and the internet surrounded by the Holy Spirit and 36 unsus-pecting men worshipping God, and searching for a meaningful relationship with Jesus and people in their communities.

When is the 32nd Annual Harvest Festival?

Saturday, November 12, 2011. Stew and chili will be served from 4:30-7:00 in the Fellowship Hall. The Silent and Live Auctions will begin at 7:00 in the Family Life Center.

What is the purpose of the Harvest Festi-val?

Each year the Harvest Festival unites members of our con-gregation and the community for fellowship and to raise money for First UMC by enjoying good food and partici-pating in live and silent auctions. This is the largest fund-raiser that our church has during the year, and money is raised through stew ticket sales, auctions, raffles, and do-nations.

Where can I donate an item for the silent or live auction?

Beginning Sunday, October 30th, we will be accepting items at the church in the Family Life Center. Sign your name and auction item on one of the lists located by the Fellowship Hall. In order for all items to be included in the auction program, we MUST have the item in the church by Wednesday, November 9th. Please don’t think an item is too small to donate. All proceeds from the auctions go directly towards fulfilling needs in our church.

How can I help with Harvest Festival?

Donate your time! Volunteers are always needed, and it’s very exciting to be a part of such a great event. Please consider giving 30 minutes of your time. If you are not able to give your time, please make sure to attend. Even better, do BOTH! Please be sure to sign the volunteer sheets near Fellowship Hall so we know where you would prefer to help.

Where can I buy my $5 ticket?

Members of the Sunday School classes have tickets as well as the church office. Please invite family and friends to join you for this night of fellowship.

How do I bid on an item?

In order to bid on an item in the silent or live auction you must have a bidder number. A table will be stationed in-side the gym and you may pick up your bidder number any time after 5 pm. You will be able to pay for your items by cash, check or credit/debit card. (Visa and Mas-tercard only)

Who can come?

Anyone! This is a great opportunity to visit with members of the congregation as well as inviting friends, family mem-bers and coworkers to experience FUMC. This is a night that many look forward to all year. If you haven’t attended a Harvest Festival before, we encourage you to come and see what all the fuss is about.

Is Childcare Available?

Childcare is available during the Harvest Festival. Chil-dren ages 0-36 months will be cared for in the church nursery starting at 4:30 pm. Children 4 years old through 5th grade will be treated to a movie night in the basement starting at 6:30 pm. Childcare will end at the close of auction (no later than 10 pm). Children will not be able to leave the basement area without a parent or guardian.

Reservations are required for childcare services. You may

either call the church office (903-885-8125) or stop by

the registration table outside the Fellowship Hall. Reser-

vations must be made by Sunday, November 6th.

DON’T MISS THE HAMILTON BIBLE CLASS BAKE SALE

Friday, November 11th 8:00 am in Fellowship Hall

Whether you’re a baker or an eater (or both!) you are needed to make the

Hamilton Bible Class Bake Sale a rousing success! If you would like to con-

tribute baked goods to the sale please plan to have them in the Fellowship Hall

before 8:00 am on November 11th. There will be someone in Fellowship Hall

on Thursday, November 10th from 4:00-6:00 to accept baked items. The

Hamilton Bible Class ladies have quite a reputation for their delicious bake sale

items so if you are looking to purchase some treats stop by early for the best

choices. Stop by on your way to work and be the hit of the office!

Again this year we will have a couple of opportunities to spend a little bit of money to win a chance for a HUGE prize.

Taste of the Town

Our Raffle item will be a “Taste of the Town”. Some of the greatest family owned restaurants in Sulphur Springs have donated a dinner for four. Thank you to Bodacious, Muddy Jake’s, Pizza Inn, Lou Viney, H&H Brand Steak-house, San Remo, and Pioneer Café. We all love these places and it sure would be nice not to worry about lunch after church for a while.

Raffle tickets will be on sale the night of the Harvest Festival for $5 each or

4/$20. During the stew, tickets will be available near the Fellowship Hall. Once we begin the silent/live auctions the

tickets will be available in the gym.

Apple i-Pad2 (64 GB) w/ Wi-Fi + 3G (AT&T)

Our other big “prize” of the night will be a top of the line i-Pad 2. This item will be given away in the “ping pong” game. The 64GB I-Pad has every bell and whistle you can imagine, plus a case and $100 in itunes gift cards. This will be an amazing prize for one lucky winner! There will be different levels of play, but entry to play begins at just $10/chance. This game always turns out to be a really fun time. A huge thanks goes to the Good News Class for donating this item to Harvest Festival.

Kingdom Kids Children’s Choir: Sack-n- Sing, Nov. 6th Our Christmas concert will be here before we know it and there are a lot of songs to learn! To give us a good head start, we will have a Sack-n-Sing on Sunday, November 6th from 12:00-2:00. Pack your child a sack lunch and a drink, and we will provide dessert. This is for all elementary sing-ers, Kindergarten-5th grade.

Christmas Concert: Dec. 7th The Kingdom Kids and Joyful Noise choirs will have their Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 7th. Mark your calendars now for a joyful night of songs and celebra-tion!

Mission Possible Kids Our Special Agents have done an amazing job this semester! They collected 450 pounds of food for Meal-a-Day, have been praying for all of our adult Sunday school classes, are planning a Harvest fundraiser to raise money for Sarah Fox’s mission trip, and that’s just the beginning! They have so many great ideas about how to serve God and our commu-nity, and we can’t wait to see them put into action. If you want in on the mission, MPKids meets during Wonderful Wednesdays!

Do you want to be re-created in God’s love and grace to be a disciple of Christ who makes a difference in the world? Let God guide you to enter into a life-changing experience! For more info about Emmaus and Chrysalis or to connect with a sponsor, call Debbie Riggsby at 903-885-2185, ext. 103.

DO YOU HAVE A HIDDEN TALENT? The 2nd, 3rd & 4th grade girls classroom has some furniture in need of a little loving care. There is a chair, a table, and a couple of cabinets that need to be freshened up. If you have a talent for furniture refinishing and would like to share that gift with this class please contact Myra Watson at 903-439-8399.

CHURCH PROPERTY MIA!

It seems that some church property has gone missing! There is a round table that cannot be located. The two really big stock pots from the kitchen are gone. A red two-wheeled dolly has been missing for six months or longer.

If you have borrowed something from the church please bring it back. We all have the best of intentions of returning the borrowed item the very next time we come by the church and then the business of life gets in the way. It may take a special trip to get this done but you will feel so much better once the items are back in their rightful place. Thank you!

GET READY TO DECK THE HALLS! If you want to get in the Christmas spirit FAST how about joining us on Tuesday, November 22, at 12:30 pm in the sanctuary as we hang the greens and decorate the Chrismon Tree? Meet in the sanctuary and the “professionals” (those who have been doing this for years!) will di-rect you in what goes where and the sanctuary will be ready for Advent and Christmas in no time at all.

Our True Love Waits event last weekend was a great expe-rience! We want to say a very special thanks to Ginger & Jeb Brooks for their help and leadership in making it such a wonderful weekend. We had 18 youth participants who were all amazing in sharing the hearts and being honest about the pressures and concerns they face day in and day out. It was another one of those events that I wish all of you could experience in seeing the hearts of the young people we have in this church and community. Too often, all we hear is the negative stories, but let me assure you, we have just as many, if not more, kids out there to-day with a true heart and passion for the Lord.

Thanks also to the parents for entrusting your child to us to talk about some of the issues we discussed and being involved in the commitment ceremony on Saturday night. We hope and pray that this will be an open door for you and your child to continue with these conversations.

May we all be in prayer for the teenagers of this communi-ty and everywhere that they can be a light for their Father in their world!

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL HOSPICE MONTH National Hospice Month is a time to recognize the im-portance of end-of-life care in our community. This year’s National theme, Preserving a Legacy…treasuring memories, reminds us that every person receiving Hospice care is a unique individual with a lifetime of experiences, relation-ships and gifts to share. Hospice at Memorial honors pa-tients and their families and supports them during the jour-ney to life’s end as we know it. Share an extra hug to those touched by Hospice and remember them in your THANKS-giving blessings.

LOST & FOUND The church office has a lost & found box located behind the front counter. It is currently overflowing. If you’ve lost jewelry, a sweater, books, etc., please stop by to see if it’s been turned in to the office.

A couple of specific “lost” items that needs to be found are Debbie Young’s blue bowl & slotted spoon. She did not get home from the Sunday School Fall Round Up with those items. If you know where they are please contact the office and we’ll help with the return of those items.

Fall Men’s Retreat Wild At Heart/Band of Brothers Bootcamp

November 4-6, 2011 @ Lone Star

This will be a boot camp based on the message of Wild at Heart similar to those held by John Eldredge and Ransomed Heart Min-istries. The speaker is Bart Hansen who is one of the core members of the Ransomed Heart Ministry team. For anyone who may be unfamiliar with RHM, check out www.ransomedheart.com. As those who've had the privilege of attending a WAH boot camp will tell you, the impact it will have on your life is profound.

The venue will be Lakewood Baptist Assembly in Lone Star, Texas. There are two options available for accommodations. There is a lodge with a total of 16 rooms with two beds and a private bathroom. Then there are dormitory facilities with multiple bunks and shared bathroom/shower. Obviously space is limited for the lodge rooms so they will be on a first come, first serve basis. The cost will be $140 for the lodge (double occupancy) and $100 for the dorms. This includes two nights lodging and all meals from dinner Friday through breakfast Sunday.

For more information or to make your reservation, please contact Jason Dietze at [email protected] or by calling 903-885-2185.

Travel with Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in an Advent experience guided by Rev. Adam Hamilton of Church of the Resurrection UMC in Leawood, KS. Our guidebook is The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem with the oh-so-familiar Christmas scripture passages that will surprise you in their unfamiliarity!!! Walk alone in your own time of quiet reading and reflec-tion or join your FUMC family in a Sunday School class or small group with video of actual sites and lively discussion. Seekers, Good News, and Discoverers are already planning on trekking together. Ask your Sunday School class to consider going on the journey starting Nov. 20 and ending Dec. 18. S.S. classes coordinate with Debbie Riggsby for materials. If you want to join a class, check out our new Sunday and Tuesday Journey Groups:

Sunday Morning Journey Group – 9:45-10:25 a.m. in Conference Room 2 in Ad Bldg

Tuesday Morning Journey Small Group – 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in 311 Church St Parsonage

Carl Hurley Affectionately known as "America's funniest professor, " Carl Hurley has always had an eye for the fun in life and an ear for a good story. Carl grew up in a two-room cabin built by his father in the Appa-lachian foothills of Laurel County, Kentucky. “We lived so far out in the country we had to go to-wards town to hunt.” His childhood was spent swapping yarns in a family of colorful storytellers.

Jeanne Robertson Other speakers might be as witty as Jeanne. Some might even be as tall. (Barefooted with her hair "mashed" down, she's 6'2" in her size 11B stocking feet.) But nowhere will you find a speaker so adept at turning personal experiences into funny material that does more than elicit laughter. This Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant, “Yearrrrrrrrrrrs ago,” quoting Jeanne, uses her down-home Southern drawl to leave her audiences laughing . . . and thinking about her message.

A NOTHY CHRISTMAS!
