CHAIRMAN &EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE

For 104 years, the NC Masonic and Eastern Star fraternities and their numerous partners around the state have ensured that WhiteStone: A Masonic and Eastern Star Community continues its rich tradition of providing exceptional retirement living while also fulfilling its charitable fraternal mission. In reflecting on the events and achievements since our last report, we are humbled by our progress as an organization, but aware of the need to continue to strive for excellence, to be innovative, and to deliver on our vision.

One of the challenges those of us in senior living face is finding the right balance between being fiscally responsible while ensuring the best service and care for our residents. Included in this report is our consolidated financials, which show another solid year of operational performance. In addition, the Care Center was once again rated a five-star community by

the Center for Medical Services. Our sixth bi-annual resident satisfaction survey revealed high scores, with 86 percent of our residents reporting very high satisfaction with living at WhiteStone, and 87 percent stating they would recommend the community to friends and family.

We are proud of the service and care our employees provide with the resources we have; however, we recognize there is always room for continual improvement.

During the past 12 months, we have made significant progress in two important areas. First, we have continued to work on the strategic plan for our community. Our master plan, which was completed in late 2015, provided for a new assisted living building, renovation of the Care and Wellness Center and the addition of an independent living building.

With the concept completed, we have moved on to the challenging tasks of completing the final design

of the project and have assembled our development team. Life Care Services Development has been selected as our developer, SFCS will serve as architects for the project, and Cain Brothers will be the underwriters. It is expected that by late 2017, we will begin presales and hope to break ground in 2019. We are cautiously optimistic about moving forward with this exciting plan as we feel it positions our retirement community for expanded growth and continued success in the decades to come for a new generation of retirees.

Secondly, in partnership with the Masonic and Eastern Home Foundation LLC (MESH Foundation), we have made significant progress in the development of a statewide outreach program. For years, our fraternities have admired the fraternal outreach programs of other states and have wished that we could someday be able assist our members in their own home.

“Coming together is

a beginning, keeping

together is progress;

working together is

success.”

-- Henry Ford.

We are pleased to announce that the dream has finally become a reality. The North Carolina Masonic and Eastern Star Outreach Program (MESOP) has been established and is now able to provide needed assistance and services to members and their spouses who are struggling at home. We recognize that not all of our aging fraternal members necessarily want to move to Greensboro to spend their golden years, but at the same time may be faced with financial, health or caregiver challenges. We think the

outreach program is a game changer for our charity and we look forward to seeing it exponentially grow.

Finally, our fraternal charity continues to be the core of our mission. Thanks to the ongoing financial support of the North Carolina Masonic Foundation, Eastern Star Foundation, and MESH Foundation LLC, we are able to help our members, and their families in need. We also thank our fraternal Sisters and Brothers for their time, talents, and financial resources to support our beloved charity at

WhiteStone. We hope you enjoy reviewing in the following pages our charity report, as well as a personality profile of the first Master of MESH lodge -- and the profound impact you and our partners have in providing for others.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and management team at WhiteStone, we thank you for your support or our beloved home and its charity.

During the past year, WhiteStone continued its charitable program by providing financial assistance for those in need. The community in 2016, subsidized approximately 40 fraternally related residents (14 Eastern Star Members, 7 Masonic Members and 19 Masonically affiliated family members) at a total cost of $1.2M. This support came in the form of paying for room and board, medical supplies, pharmacy needs and other expenses that the residents otherwise could not

afford to pay for themselves. Of these 40 residents, 19 were in Medicaid nursing home beds, and 21 were

living in residential apartments. Beginning 2014, WhiteStone in

partnership with the NC Masonic and Eastern Star Home Foundation LLC made available four one bedroom units and two studio rooms for Fraternal Members who could not afford either the entrance fee and/or monthly fee. The MESH Foundation LLC has now had over 20 fraternal applications approved since 2014 to receive financial assistance. In 2016, 7 additional applications for fraternal assistance were approved.

In addition to this direct financial support for fraternal residents, WhiteStone offers an “adopt a resident” program, where Masonic lodges and Eastern Star chapters adopt a fraternal resident and provide gifts, cards, and other support directly to those individuals on an ongoing basis. In 2016, 37 Eastern Star Chapters and 32 Masonic Lodges had adopted 42 fraternally related residents in need.

In October of 2009, WhiteStone initiated the medical equipment loan/information hotline to assist fraternal members with their needs. The community routinely loans surplus equipment and provides guidance and assistance to those fraternal members and family requiring additional information for programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and Veterans support.

Subject: 2016 annual report I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Grand Lodge of North Carolina for nominating and the North Carolina Masonic Foundation for appointing me to serve the NC Masonic and Eastern Star Home Foundation, LLC. I would also like to once again extend our gratitude to Mr. Mark Kolada, Executive Director of WhiteStone, for his contribution of time, talent, and advice to this Board. My sisters and brothers, in the few short paragraphs below I will attempt to summarize the accomplishments of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Foundation, LLC for 2016. First and foremost, these are your accomplishments. You, the members of our great fraternities, have made these things possible. On behalf of all the Mangers, I would like to express my gratitude and never ending amazement at the generosity of the members of the Masonic and Eastern Star fraternities. We would like to especially thank the Masonic Foundation and the Eastern Star Foundation for their excellent stewardship and donations to the MESH Foundation LLC. In April we negotiated an agreement with First South Bank of NC, to provide banking services on a no fee basis. This resulted in a savings of approximately $500.00 per year in bank fees and charges. Additionally, we are now able to effect secure wire transfer of funds and scan donation checks without fees. We were called upon to provide $600.00 in emergency assistance to help a fraternal member and his wife stay in his local facility so that he could remain active in his community. This particular case brought to our attention a critical need and began the process of instituting and developing

Subject: 2016 annual report

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Grand Lodge of North Carolina for nominating and the North Carolina Masonic Foundation for appointing me to serve the NC Masonic and Eastern Star Home Foundation, LLC.

On behalf of all the Managers, I would like to express my gratitude and never ending amazement at the generosity of the members of the Masonic and Eastern Star fraternities.

This particular case brought to our attention a critical need and began the process of instituting and developing an “Outreach Program.” Our concept of this program is to be able to help assist our fraternal members in matters involving long term health care without the necessity of moving to WhiteStone. We feel that keeping our members and families together in their established community should be a priority. We are looking at a few models from different States and are in the process of adapting them to our needs. It is our goal to be able to offer some type of assistance during the summer or fall of 2017.

During 2016 we processed ten (10) applications for assistance:

a. Seven (7) were approvedb. One (1) was withdrawnc. One (1) was declared ineligibled. One (1) is still pending

During this year we received donations in the following categories:

a. Direct from membership $267,374.00b. Masonic Foundation $252,131.00c. OES Foundation $166,499.26d. Misc. $ 6,100.00

During the same period, we provided the following assistance:

a. New Residence Assistance $179,833b. Fraternal Assistance $137,470

In 2016 we had the following expenses:

a. Backshop fees (postage, acknowledgement cards, etc) $461.82b. Bank Fees $380.00

Sisters and Brothers, if I may recap for you, during 2016 the LLC received $697,000.00 in funding and administered $317,300.00 in assistance to WhiteStone fraternal residents, with overhead expenses of $840.00. This amounts to a 0.2% administrative fee. Keeping our administration fee to less than 1% is something that everyone can be proud of. Currently we have a surplus of $385,300.00, which amounts to approximately one year’s operating expenses; which is within our established parameters. Additionally, we have established an endowment fund to help ensure our ability to meet our obligations in the future. The Endowment Fund balance of April 30th, 2017 is $465,374.57.

In conclusion, this has been a busy and active year for the LLC. I appreciate all the hard work and effort the Managers have put in to make this such a successful year. As you can see from the financials, we have exercised good stewardship over our donated funds and I believe that we are on track to meet and exceed our objectives. We thank you all for the encouragement and support. If I, or any of the Managers, can be of assistance or answer any questions please do not hesitate to call. We are always happy to inform our fraternal members of the good things that are happening in their name.

Al Phillips knows a blessing when he sees one.

And he works hard to be a blessing himself.

Not a day goes by that he doesn’t think of – and give thanks for – the generous donations that allowed him to find a modest room at WhiteStone: A Masonic and Eastern Star Community after his wife died in 2015.

Donations to the MESH Foundation LLC go directly to help Masonic brethren, sisters of the Eastern Star, and their immediate families make do financially when money runs unexpectedly short. Donations from lodges, Masonic and Eastern Star members and those who love and respect their passion for the Craft help cover room costs, medical emergencies, expensive and unplanned dental surgeries and the like.

Al gets help with his rent – the foundation pays the difference between his Social Security check and the rate for the room.

“I am proud to say it: The North Carolina Masonic Foundation helped me get here, and stay here,” says Phillips, who moved in after Barbara, his wife of 56 years, died in 2012.

The couple at the time were living with their youngest son, Joe. After Barbara passed away, Joe suggested to his dad that he apply to move into WhiteStone.

“Both Joe and his wife worked, and if something happened to me, they couldn’t be with me all day,” Al says. “This was a perfect solution.”

He moved in and soon found new friends and grew a deep appreciation for the brethren and their families whose donations made his stay possible.

Al became a Master Mason in November 1977 and was a member of Guilford #656. He is a Past Master of Guilford and is the inaugural Master

of MESH #771. He also has been a member of the Greensboro Valley Scottish Rite since 1978 and is a 32nd Degree Mason. In 1979, he joined the York Rite and went through the three bodies of Chapter, Chancellor and Commander. He worked hard and received the Knights York Court of Honor.

Because of their exemplary service to the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Al and Barbara were honored with the Grand Cross of Color in 1983. Because of Al’s commitment to his Scottish Rite lodge, he was granted Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 1993. In 2001, he was given the Order of the Purple Cross as an Associate Regent, the highest honor given by the York Rite College. In 2003, Al explored and became a member with the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of North Carolina. After eight years, Al was elected as Grand High Priest in 2011 and was also honored as Knight Grand York Cross of Honor.

Al is also a member of the Shrine and the Past Master’s unit. In addition, Al also served as Chapter Dad for the Greensboro Order of DeMolay in 1980.

Al is not a man who misses a chance to give back.

After years of hard Masonic work, he again joined his brethren in creating the new MESH #771 lodge at WhiteStone. The lodge meets on the second Saturday of each month, which allows those who can’t drive at night to come during daylight and is a good time for fellow WhiteStone Masons to join. Visitors, including Grand Line officers, attend regularly. They have some 75 members now, and expect more to join.

This lodge does other things a little differently, he said, Because there’s no overhead – no lodge to build or maintain – dues are gathered and donated to the Masonic

Home for Children at Oxford and the WhiteStone employee fund, a collection that offers a little financial help to the workers who care so well for residents at WhiteStone. As time goes by, some of that money will also be donated to the new Masonic and Eastern Star Outreach Program.

Al credits the lodge’s wardens, Eddie Moody and Gene Lewellyn, among others for making this lodge special – MESH #771 was named a Lion and Pillar Lodge of Excellence for 2017.

He loves living and making a difference at WhiteStone.

“There is so much to do for people in homes like this,” he says. “But you have to make an effort.”

He spends much of his time calling on his fellow Masons at WhiteStone to make sure they know they are welcome at lodge.

“A lodge is not one person,” he says. “The master happens to be the one who sets the direction but if you have good people in the room, you have a real gift.”
