ANNUAL ACCOUNTS AND REPORT 2008

St. James’s Hospital Foundation is the official charity associated with St. James’s Hospital

– a teaching hospital of Trinity College Dublin.

What we do

St. James’s Hospital Foundation facilitates and

attracts private investment in St. James’s

Hospital; investment to enhance the facilities,

education and environment for leading-edge

research and innovation, which will translate

into world-class care for all patients of this

hospital. To ensure its integrity, the Foundation

is established as a limited company separate

from St. James’s Hospital.

We fulfil our mandate as follows.

DONATIONS

St. James’s Hospital is grateful to received

unsolicited donations from former patients and

their families and friends – and friends in

general of the hospital. We process these

donations on behalf of the hospital and

disburse them. General unsolicited donations

received are disbursed within the hospital

through a competitive process. Donations

dedicated for a specific department or purpose

are ring-fenced and disbursed accordingly.

SPECIAL FUNDS

We set up Special Funds on behalf of

individuals within the hospital who – and

whose patients also – fundraise for their own

departments. These Special Funds provide

a secure and accountable way for individuals

to receive donations given to them for

specific purposes.

FUNDRAISING

We raise funds for the enhancement of St.

James’s Hospital. Our work in this regard

involves identifying targeted strategic goals and

developing suitable fundraising campaigns.

I take great pleasure in presenting the annual accounts and report

of St. James’s Hospital Foundation for 2008 – the first that I present

since becoming chairman last summer.

During the Celtic Tiger era members of the public asked why a major

teaching hospital needed additional funds; our answer has been and

is that privately donated funds are and always will be needed.

Generously donated funds are about enabling the new ideas and

services that make possible the quantum leap improvements for patients.

Disbursement increased by some €45,000 during 2008 and not one of the initiatives

mentioned on the next page would have been possible without privately donated

funds. We are deeply grateful to all those who give.

There is currently a significant emphasis on the physical development of St. James’s

Hospital; a major Cancer Care Centre is currently under construction and a Centre of

Excellence for Successful Ageing is funded to proceed. Stroke disease will be a focus of

this latter centre and I am very pleased to inform here that development of the

hospital’s Stroke Service will be the main focus of Foundation fundraising during this

year and next.

Although Stroke is the single most common cause of acquired physical disability in

Ireland and the third leading cause of death – and Dublin’s South inner city, the

catchment population served by St. James’s, is disproportionately adversely affected by

Stroke – in some ways, Stroke is a ‘poor orphan’ disease. Since the Stroke service was

established in 2006, St. James’s has succeeded in reducing mortality and the length of

time patients stay in hospital – and private donations are now needed to develop

further the service for patients who have for too long been neglected by the Irish

health system.

I am personally grateful to my friends and colleagues at St. James’s for their support

and, on behalf of the staff of St. James’s Hospital, I would like to express our deep

gratitude to all of those who support our endeavours.

With every good wish.

Sources of donated income

DONATIONS

During 2008 we processed and

disbursed donations received in

connection with 31 Special Funds –

funds given by generous people for the

specific benefit of the work of named

individuals at St. James’s. Other

donations given for the general benefit

of the hospital and for specific purposes

or departments are ring-fenced also for

later disbursement.

St. James's Hospital Foundation and

St. James's Hospital are always grateful

to former patients, their friends and

families, friends and supporters of the

hospital, and indeed members of

hospital staff, who commit their time

and energy to fundraise for St. James's.

We received funds from the Mr Gay

Ireland competition, Trinity Med Day,

from the inaugural John Cusack

Memorial Golf Classic and from many,

many other generous initiatives. More

than 250 women participated in the

2008 Women’s Mini Marathon for

St. James’s.

FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING

The Foundation once again organised a

Golf Classic and a Christmas appeal

that were both most generously

supported by companies and

individuals. The former generated funds

that are being used this year to support

two important initiatives within the

hospital’s cancer service: the cancer

research biobank, and an ultrasound

system for administration of chemo-

therapy. The Christmas appeal generated

enough funds to enable the hospital to

purchase an electric transport buggy for

patients – the first in an Irish hospital.

How funds were used

€184,089 was disbursed in 2008.

Donated funds are targeted always at

improving the treatment and welfare of

current and future patients of St.

James’s.

DISBURSEMENT OF GENERAL

DONATIONS

Small grants programme

Unsolicited donations received for the

general benefit of the hospital are

disbursed through the Foundation’s

Small Grants Programme – the Grants

Committee adjudicates an internal

competition. Almost €27,000 was drawn

down during 2008 for 22 small-scale

initiatives that included a psychology

programme for cancer patients,

renovation of the relatives’ room

adjacent to the Emergency Department,

outings for elderly long-stay patients

and musical performances in the

hospital – as well as small contributions

to research and staff education.

DISBURSEMENT OF

RESTRICTED DONATIONS

In addition to the initiatives funded

within the Small Grants Programme

above, over 70 other initiatives were

funded from restricted donations

received. The Foundation receives

restricted donations for all departments

and ensures that these are disbursed

for the purpose intended. In all cases

we aim to inform donors when once

their restricted donations have been

used. It would be impossible to

enumerate them all here, but some

disbursements that may be of special

interest are noted. Full details of

disbursement processes and of all

monies that have been disbursed are

available from the Foundation office.

Disbursements from Special Funds

Significant new monitoring equipment

was purchased for cardiac patients

from the Special Fund for Cardiac

Rehabilitation.

Additional occupational therapy was

provided for long-stay burns patients

and a weekly clinic funded for

HIV/Aids patients from the Special

Funds for Burns and HIV/Aids patients

respectively. While, in the sphere of

patient comfort, a new adjustable bed

was bought for Stroke patients needing

24-hour high dependency care from

the Special Fund for Stroke, and

new TVs for all of the isolation rooms

for Haematology and Bone Marrow

Transplant patients and for intensive

care and high dependency patients

were purchased from the Denis

Burkitt Ward and ICU Patient Welfare

funds respectively.

Disbursements from other

restricted donations

Two cancer research projects being

undertaken under the aegis of the

hospital’s Cancer Clinical Trials Unit –

one focusing on Rectal Cancer and one

focusing on Lung Cancer – were

supported, and a major contribution

was made to an important Prostate

Cancer research project. For the Burns

Unit new comforts were bought that

included TVs and DVD players for all

isolation rooms.

Disbursement of fundraised funds

The Board has now commenced inviting

applications for funds prior to each of

its Board meetings. While none were

disbursed during 2008, the Board

committed during 2008 to disburse

fundraised funds during 2009 in

connection with a number of important

hospital initiatives. The Foundation will

provide the consumables needed for

this year for the St. James’s Hospital

Biobank – an initiative that is leading

the development of an all-Ireland

cancer biobank network. The

Foundation has undertaken to

underwrite the purchase of an

ultrasound system that will help in

administering chemotherapy to cancer

patients – this will provide a first in a

public hospital in Ireland – and the

Foundation will contribute to the

purchase of a bedside cranial imaging

system for Stroke patients.
