DEEP CONNECTIONS WITH NATURE A record number of visitors, 270,000, enjoyed grounds and on-site programs. Hosted Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat, a traveling exhibit from the Morton Arboretum about the plight of endangered and threatened trees. 1200+ people attended Bernheim’s Big Tree Hug Challenge, unofficially breaking the world record for most people hugging trees at the same place at the same time. The first “State of the Forest” evening occurred, providing a field presentation by the Artist in Residence, Chiel Kuijl, food catered by Isaac’s Café, and slide presentations on Bernheim’s mission, the state of the horticulture collections, and the state of the forest. 200 people participated in Smart Gardens and Landscape classes throughout the year. 1200 tree seedlings were adopted at our Arbor Day tree event. Volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours of service which included support from UPS, Humana, Amazon, Beam Suntory, Brown-Forman, and more. Hosted the annual CONNECT event, reaching 1,400 people with a dynamic experience that featured art, science and nature. With support from PNC Foundation “Grow Up Great”, the Children at Play Network, continued its focus on a regional approach to improve outdoor play environments for the healthy development of children. Participated in Metro Louisville’s Cultural Pass program, an effort to provide better access to nature, arts and culture for children and families. Artist in Residence Program hosted the following artists - Chiel Kuijl, February - April, 2016, Holland. ‘ Conducted biological inventories of newly acquired lands, including French’s Cave and upper Cave Branch watershed.

‘ Documented occurrences in Bernheim of new wildlife species, including Rafinesque’s big-eared bat, black bear, and white pelican.

‘ Documented new plant species, including resurrection fern, horned bladderwort, slime mold, and 17 new fungi species.

‘ Began a long-term native bee survey.‘ Conducted monarch butterfly counts and tagging efforts. ‘ Conducted prescribed burns on 51 acres within the arboretum and

natural areas.‘ Purchased a Chevy Volt, one of the most environmentally friendly cars

available, for use as the Ranger vehicle. ‘ Planted over 100 trees in the Arboretum from 10 different genera,

including ginkgo, maple, elm, zelkova, hornbeam, birch, and dogwood.

‘ Established a partnership with Mississippi State University to conduct long-term oak forest research.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP‘ The first Sustainable SITES Roadshow in the nation occurred at

Bernheim, introducing a landscape certification program for sustainability of project design, implementation and operations.  

‘ Continued northern bobwhite quail reintroduction into Bernheim’s prairies and grasslands.

‘ Installed a new solar pump that is used to water the Edible Garden.‘ Created a new tree display, Kentucky Trees of Concern, with

educational signage explaining the significance/threats to each Kentucky species.

‘ Worked with Nature Rich Louisville to bring Richard Louv, internationally acclaimed author of Last Child in the Woods, to speak in Louisville and at Bernheim.

‘ Hosted two SONICBernheim evenings that reached more than 400 people with sound explorations examining the nexus between sound and nature. This program was recognized internationally at the Invisible Places Conference in Portugal.

‘ Presented at the United States Play Coalition Conference in Clemson, SC about Bernheim’s work to establish a regional approach to improving outdoor play environments that connect children with nature from birth.

‘ Established the Bernheim Center for Health and Harmony and created Harmony in Practice, a pilot program inspired by HRH Prince Charles and others that helps provide teachers with ways to explore existing curriculae through the lens of nature.

ACTIONS BEYOND OUR BORDERS‘ Participated in a cooperative stewardship effort at Penn Run Nature

Preserve to protect rare glade cress habitat.‘ Helped the city of Elizabethtown and Greenspace build an improved

trail around Freeman Lake.‘ Created a comprehensive species list for the Urban Forest initiative in

Louisville.‘ Reported plant evaluations for The American Holly Society, The

Southern Living Plant Collection, and The Boxwood Society.‘ Continued deer management efforts, including hosting 50 disabled

hunters through Outdoors Without Limits (OWLS) program. ‘ Maintained green roofs at the American Life building and the Atria

Support Center at the Nucleus Building in Louisville.‘ Partnered with UPS to distribute tree seedlings throughout the

community for Arbor Day. ‘ Welcomed University of Kentucky extension agents for training CEU’s

in our collections and Edible Garden.‘ Planted trees in the city of Bardstown as part of a partnership with

Bardstown Public Works beautification project.‘ Created a play environment conceptual plan for Maupin Elementary

School through a grant provided by the Norton Foundation.‘ Continued community outreach efforts, connecting directly with more

than 40 different regional organizations that ranged from academic partnerships (University of Kentucky – School of Design mini shelter project) to environmental and sustainability organizations.

‘ Bernheim: A Natural Muse exhibition continued through April 9, 2016 at the Carnegie Center for Art and History, New Albany, IN.

‘ 168 Images of Bernheim were installed in 5 hospitals and medical centers.

‘ Education Director, Whitney Wurzel, was elected to the Board of Directors for the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education.

‘ Interpretive Programs Manager, Wren Smith, led a four-day Certified Interpretive Guide Training, co-sponsored by the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), for attendees from across the country.

‘ Wren Smith presented the session, Interpreting Natural History on One Hand, at the 2016 NAI National Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas.

‘ Hosted the Social Media and Graphic Design NAI Workshop, led by NAI Deputy Director, Paul Caputo and attended by NAI members from across the country.
