What a truly special day it was celebrating our 40th year of ministry! We can't thank you all enough for spending this day with us. We are grateful for all of the wonderful folks that spent their time planning and coordinating such a beautiful event. There were those on the front lines - setting up, cleaning up . . . and those in the background planning, tracking down charter members, making lunches, packing lunches, creating bulletins, compiling our history, brainstorming and taking us through the years in an SVPC time machine. Thanks to all who participated in the parade. This memorable event could not have happened without all of you!

May is Mental Health Month. The Missions and Outreach Ministry seeks to increase awareness about mental illness and mental health, and bring focus to our support of the Live Oak Counseling Center, formerly the Columbia Pastoral Counseling Center, a ministry which is supported by our church both financially since 1991, and by membership on the Board of Trustees for the Center since 2006. Live Oak Counseling Center has received financial support from six Presbyterian churches in the Columbia area and from client fees. Their mission is to provide professional and affordable mental health counseling and outreach services for persons struggling with life issues and to offer opportunities for spiritual growth and wellness.

As a non-profit organization, the Center is always seeking funds to assist clients who cannot afford to pay the full fee, to enable them to have access to the counseling and therapy they need (see the statistic on unmet treatment needs below). Consider a donation to Live Oak’s Care Fund, which allows contributors to designate gifts in honor or memory of a loved one. Brochures for the Center, including more information about their services and a form for contributions, are available in the Atrium and Potts Hall.

Fast Facts About Mental Illness:

Mental health problems are more common than cancer and heart disease combined. 81.6 million Americans (1 in 4 – 25%) experience some form of mental disorder each year. 54% of children with emotional and behavioral disturbances drop out of school. In 90% of suicides for both children and adults, mental illness is the attributed cause. Most common mental illnesses are anxiety and depression. More than 50% of adults and 70% of children and adolescents are not receiving any

treatment for their mental illness.

(source: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, courtesy of Live Oak Counseling Center, 2016.)

The “best-practice” treatments for mental illness today are highly effective. The staff at Live Oak Counseling Center are licensed and experienced therapists who are dedicated in helping each person gain health and wholeness. Services include individual, couples and family therapy, child and adolescent counseling and support groups.

If you or someone you know would like to confidentially talk with a counselor please contact the center, either by email at [email protected] , by phone at 803-256-1033, or in person at 600 King Street, Columbia, SC 29205 (located behind Shandon Presbyterian Church).

DID YOU KNOW? There are four simple steps you can take to improve your mental health today: a healthy diet, regular exercise, relaxation, and plenty of rest. As a bonus, your physical health will improve too! (source: http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/sites/default/files/May2013%20FactSheets.pdf )

Book Club meets June 4th at 3pm at Linda Jones’ home, 13 Charley Horse Road. The meeting date changed due to Memorial Day Weekend. We will discuss "The Pearl that Broke the Shell" by Nadia Hashimi. All are welcome!

It’s that time of year again when help is needed weeding and watering flower beds around the church. Last year we had eight volunteers who spent the summer tending their adopt-a-bed areas. It’s an easy way to help out and spread the work around among lots of folks. You can work whenever you want and only need to sign up to take care of a small portion of the church flower beds. Check out the maps in the Narthex, Atrium and Potts Hall to locate the area you are willing to take care of and then sign your name by that area on the chart attached to the map. Sign up and Tracy Barnes will contact you with more info. You can also contact Tracy directly at 315-3677 or [email protected].

Help Needed with the New Atrium Flower Bed—We made great headway on work day on the new flower bed outside the Atrium. We didn’t finish, so I am looking for some more helpers to plant rose bushes and edge out the garden. Contact Tracy Barnes at 315-3677 or at [email protected].

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is done for the summer. Our next meeting will be Sept 6th. Everybody will continue to work on their project as possible during the summer. Completed work should be left in the Session Room. Yarn and patterns are still available. If more info is needed, contact Deborah Strom at 803-463-4053 or [email protected]

Summer Sunday School begins June 11th through August 13th. We will hold a combined adult class in Potts Hall, as well as a combined Jr. High, Sr. High and Confirmation Class.

Books from Lamar’s Library are available today in the Atrium. Donations will go to the

principal of the mortgage.

It is our great pleasure to announce the first phase of Voices II. Your church leadership is excited about the future of Spring Valley, and we know you are, too. Session wants to know your thoughts. Starting this month, the Session will be sitting and listening to members of the congregation. We’re not exactly sure of how many folks want to come talk, so to kick things off, we're going to schedule two special Session meetings just to listen. From a logistics standpoint, we want to make sure that everyone who wants to talk can, so we're going to ask that you limit your time to about 3 minutes. We’re also going to ask that you submit written remarks so we make sure we understand your key points. We’re going to have a special Session meeting on Sunday, May 21st from 2 to 3 pm and another Wednesday, May 24th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm just for this purpose. Logistics for signing up will be forthcoming next Sunday. If you’d like to tell us an idea, a concern, a comment, or a goal, we'd love to hear what you have to say.

For those for whom public speaking is a fate worse than anything you can imagine, we will have suggestion boxes available. Soon we will set up Voices Online. You'll be able to send a written message to the Session through our church website. You're more than welcome to tell us who you are when you do it, but the intent is for this to be similar to stewardship, in that by the time it gets to us, identifying information will be removed. We hope that will allow everyone to feel comfortable letting us know where you think we need to steer SVPC moving forward. Stay tuned for a go-live date for Voices Online.

We can't wait to hear your ideas about Spring Valley Presbyterian Church's next 40 years.
