Founded as the Billings Symphony Society in 1951, the BSO&C’s mission is to enrich lives through music. Today that mission remains the driving force behind the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale.
This season, join music director Anne Harrigan along with 135+ members of the BSO&C, as we present 2017-2018 concert season, featuring six series concerts and multiple special events throughout the year, culminating with the 46th annual Symphony in the Park, June 24, 2018.
Each season, the BSO&C performs for tens of thousands of people throughout south central and eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming, introducing music to children, youth, adults, and seniors through Explore Music!, the BSO&C’s community engagement program.
The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale’s 2017–2018 season is proudly sponsored by The Oakland Companies.
The BSO&C is supported, in part, by a grant from the Montana Arts Council, an agency of the state government, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

BILLINGS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORALE 3
Anne Harrigan, Music Director of the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale and the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Music Center of South Central Michigan, has earned a reputation throughout the country for her innovative programming, commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement.
Her commitment to innovation in programming has resulted in groundbreaking multi-disciplinary programs that have attracted national attention. These include the United States premiere of Shaun Davey’s A Brendan Voyage, a concerto for uilleann pipes and orchestra with the renowned piper Christopher Layer; collaborations with Alexander Streltsov, aerialist; silent movies with live orchestra; live video projections of performances; Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: Dream of America, a chronicle of the journey of seven immigrants through Ellis Island; and collaborations with the late Montana photographer, Michael Sample.
Ms. Harrigan began her career at the age of 19 when she founded the Johns Hopkins University Chamber Orchestra while still a violin student at the Peabody Institute of Music. She received her Master’s degree in conducting at Yale University under the tutelage of Otto Werner Mueller. In 1983, Ms. Harrigan formed the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and developed it from a fledgling organization to one of the finest chamber orchestras in the country.
Her interactive, multi-disciplinary family concert, Colors of the World, produced for television by Maryland Public Television, was recognized with an Emmy award in 1998. In addition, the BCO’s first compact disc recording, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra Live, received rave reviews.
Ms. Harrigan resides in Rockford, Michigan with her husband, Eric Hudson and daughter, Erin. When not conducting, she enjoys bicycling and cross-country skiing.
Dr. Steven Hart, now in his eleventh season as the Billings Symphony Chorale Director, is a professor of music at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. He conducts choral ensembles and teaches conducting, vocal pedagogy and private voice. He completed his PhD at the University of Colorado, his MM at the University of South Dakota, and his BM at Western Michigan University.
Dr. Hart is active as a guest conductor and has presented master classes and clinics in California, Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. He was a guest conductor at the International Conducting Workshop in Varna, Bulgaria. He is also the conductor and founder of the High Plains Chamber Singers.
His research interests draw from neuroscience, with specific focus on the physical manifestations of mental activity through the mind-body connection. He is the Collegiate Repertoire and Resources Chair for the Montana Choral Directors Association and publishes articles for choral professionals. In preparing music ensembles for performance, Hart combines theater, sports psychology, neurolinguistics, music history and vocal pedagogy, to create the conditions for peak aesthetic experience.
Hart comes from a family of professional musicians. He began his performing career at age 9 in the title role of Oliver and at age 10 performed the title role of the Menotti opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors. Hart enjoys rock climbing, hiking, skiing, and tennis.
Meet the Directors
4 BILLINGS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORALE
Thank you for joining the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale’s (BSO&C) 67th concert season. Each year I am overjoyed to step onto the stage at the Alberta Bair Theater. It is truly an honor to play with this group of talented musicians and to share their gifts with you, our friends, family and supporters.
The Billings Symphony Society was founded in 1951 by a group of local musicians and supporters whose goal was to enrich the lives of the Billings community through
music. Today we stand by that mission by continuing a tradition of excellence in symphonic performances.
The 2017-2018 season begins with the much anticipated return of Andrew von Oeyen, playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in Montana Splendor. In October, we celebrate Tango Nuevo with special guests Hector Del Curto on the bandoneon and tango dancers Ana Padron and Diego Blanco. Join us for our Holiday Pops concert as we celebrate a classic Dickens Christmas, complete with a performance of A Christmas Carol, in two performances: Saturday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m. Rock in the New Year with the Kingston Trio. MASO Youth Competition winner Tanner Jorden will play the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto, followed by Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique in February. Billings’ crooners Chris Smith and Kristy Montgomery take the stage for The Good Life in March. The BSO&C’s season comes to a spectacular close with a semi-staged performance of Carmen, featuring the Billings Symphony Chorale, Billings own Christine Conover as Micaëla, Kristee Haney as Carmen, Benjamin Cleveland as Don José, and Gregory Gerbandt as Escamillo. For more information on the 2017-2018 season, visit billingssymphony.org.
Our mission to enrich lives through music extends well beyond the concert stage. Through our Explore Music! programs, we bring performances and music education to schools and communities throughout Montana and Wyoming. We have been able to reach 35,000 people annually who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn, listen and enjoy symphonic music.
I am honored to be a part of the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, and thank you for your continued support and dedication. I look forward to another amazing season. See you there!
Musically Yours,
Anne Harrigan

BILLINGS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORALE 13
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)Festive Overture, op. 96
One of Shostakovich’s most successful pièces d’occasion, this ebullient overture is a classic example of art-on-demand: Just a few days before a concert celebrating the 37th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, officials of the Bolshoi Theater found themselves without an opening work. A panic-stricken call was made to Shostakovich, who demonstrating a Mozartian level of facility, dashed off the work in three days, giving the parts, still wet with ink, to couriers to deliver to copyists at the theater. The successful premiere took place on November 6, 1954 and the overture has been a popular favorite ever since, receiving frequent performances at official events such as the opening of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the 2009 Nobel Prize ceremony.
The Billings Symphony previously performed Festive Overture in October 1990, under the baton of guest conductor Timothy Russell.
Eric Funk (1949- )Symphony No. 2, Montana (1991)
Commissioned by the Bozeman Symphony for their 25th season, Montana seeks to musically paint Montana’s noble and sometimes subtle landscapes in the classical symphonic form. Funk refers to it as “his Moldau,” referring to composer Bedřich Smetana’s tone poem which evokes the sounds of the great Bohemian river. Original titled The Bozeman Symphony, Symphony No. 2 was commissioned by said orchestra for their 25th season.
Tonight’s performance is a Billings Symphony premiere. Photographs courtesy of the Tippet Rise Art Center, Fishtail, MT.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, op. 18
The dismal premiere of his First Symphony in 1897 threw Rachmaninoff into a three-year bout of writer’s block. Finally, at his family’s urging, he consulted with Parisian psychologist Dr. Nikolai Dahl in January 1900. The doctor’s immediate assignment: write the new piano concerto promised to the London Philharmonic when Rachmaninoff appeared with the orchestra in 1898.
Through Dahl’s combination of enlightened discussion and rudimentary hypnosis, Rachmaninoff overcame his writer’s block and found a new voice as a composer—one with a perfect knack for unforgettable tunes, dazzling pianistic effects, an effortless flow of ideas, and a very suave sense of style. His close contemporary and antithesis, Igor Stravinsky, later called it a switch from a very young composer to a very old one. This was not meant as a compliment. In fact, written during the heyday of wild and radical new music by Debussy, Mahler, Stravinsky, Strauss, Ives, and Schoenberg, Rachmaninoff’s second concerto was proudly old-fashioned and, to the chagrin of his avant-garde contemporaries, it quickly became the most beloved concerto of the twentieth century.

14 BILLINGS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORALE
The work’s popularity goes far beyond the concert stage; its melodies have been made ubiquitous through their use in movie soundtracks and derivative works on the radio. The second theme of the Allegro scherzando made a fortune for Buddy Kay and Ted Mossman (but not Rachmaninoff) as “Full Moon and Empty Arms.” (The best-known recording was by a young Frank Sinatra in 1945, two years after Rachmaninoff’s death.) The Moderato theme (first introduced by the strings) was the basis for another Sinatra song, 1941’s “I Think of You.” Perhaps most familiar, though, to today’s audiences is the Moderato theme’s appearance in Eric Carmen’s 1975 ballad, “All By Myself.”
Carmen calls Rachmaninoff, “his favorite music,” and with its unabashed Romanticism and the virtuosity demanded of the soloist, this show stopper has become a perennial audience favorite.
BSO conductors have programmed Rachmaninoff’s masterpiece eight times since 1952; the last performance in September 2008 with pianist Valentina Lesitsa, under the baton of Anne Harrigan.

Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983)Variaciones Concertantes, op. 23
Considered by many to be the finest composer that Argentina has produced, Ginastera’s early works show a strong influence of Argentinean folk music. Later creations display a dynamic, and exceptionally colorful, cosmopolitan style that won him a strong global reputation. The Variaciones mark the transition between these two periods.
Tonight is the BSO’s premier performance of this Ginastera work.
Arturo Márquez (1950- )Danzón No. 2
Since its 1994 premiere, Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 has enjoyed immense international success. Called by some the “second Mexican national anthem,” Márquez’s piece brings some irresistible dances from the dance hall to symphonic stage. Of Cuban origin, the danzón is the waltz of the Latin world: a stately couple’s dance and main event at any ball. For Márquez, Danzón No. 2 (of 8 so far) is “a very personal way of paying my respects and expressing my emotions towards truly popular music.”
The Billings Symphony first performed Danzón No. 2 in February 2005, under the baton of Barbara Day Turner.
Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)Libertango, Adiós Nonino, Oblivion
The son of Italian immigrants who spent a good part of his growing-up years in New York’s Greenwich Village, Piazzolla always remained a bit of an outsider in his native land. In 1936, he resettled in Argentina, and his skills playing the bandoneon, the signature instrument of authentic Argentinean tango, soon won him a place in the traditional tango orchestras which were then at their height.
But Piazzolla was no traditionalist. In 1954, after studying with Alberto Ginastera, he won a scholarship to study with the great French pedagogue Nadia Boulanger in Paris. His restless musical mind soaked up French impressionism, contemporary atonality, and improvisatory jazz, but Boulanger urged him to stay close to his tango roots, declaring, “Here is the true Piazzolla!”
Piazzolla returned to Argentina and developed what he called “tango nuevo” This contemporary form of tango went far beyond smooth popular dance into the realm of serious concert music, retaining tango’s poignancy and lyricism while rejecting its tendencies toward sentimentality.
While Piazzolla’s tango compositions won fans abroad, his fellow Argentineans resisted his innovations nearly up until the time of his death in 1992. “The old tango, the one they loved was dying. And they hated me.” But by modernizing the form, Astor Piazzolla made it more eternal: In 2009, UNESCO declared tango to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Piazzolla’s works have rarely been programmed by the BSO. His Tangazo appeared on the January 1991 and February 2013 programs.
