The course will feature an in-depth review of kidneyphysiology, the pathophysiologic changes that occur inglomerular versus tubular diseases, common lab values in thevarious stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and preventionand treatment therapies for vascular access complications. Thisworkshop will be invaluable to RNs seeking to enhance theirknowledge level well beyond that acquired through a genericnursing program and provide quality care to patients with CKD.(Pharmacology: 90 minutes)

020 Making the Transition as a New APN intoNephrology Practice – ℞

Whether the focus for the advanceddegree was family, adult, or pediatric nursing practice, an-depthknowledge of the specialty of nephrology nursing is oftenmissing. This workshop will assist APNs in bridging the gapbetween their advanced practice experience and the realm ofnephrology nursing. The course will focus on thepharmacologic management of patients in various stages ofchronic kidney disease (CKD) as well as the various treatmentmodalities for CKD. This information-packed workshop will beinvaluable to APNs who are new to, or considering entering,nephrology nursing. (Pharmacology: 360 minutes)

030 The New Nephrology Nurse Manager Jennifer Payton, MHCA, BSN, RN, CNN Loretta Jackson Brown, PhD(c), RN, CNN Suzann VanBuskirk, BSN, RN, CNN

This workshop is designed for nurses who have started, orare considering, a formal leadership position in a nephrologysetting. The course will explore the typical role responsibilitiesof a nurse manager and provide tips to navigate the transitionand associated stressors experienced by both you and your staffduring the transition period. Another focus will be conflictmanagement and how to develop confidence and credibility inthese management skills. Learning how to “lead by listening”and other intangible leadership skills also will be addressed.Case studies will be used throughout the day to illustrate waysto become a positive and motivating leader.

040: Threat Assessment: Recognizing andDefusing Potentially Violent Situations

Paul Green, MS, RN, CPHQViolent confrontations and resulting injury have always

been present in the health care field, but the numbers ofreported cases are escalating just as they are in other arenas.Mr. Green will work with attendees to define threats to safetyin the workplace and the importance of recognizing thosethreats. He also will address the workplace threat assessmentteam, how it functions, and ways to prevent violence in theworkplace. This workshop is essential for all those involved inpatient care today.

Toros Kapoian, MDThreats to and strategies for preservation of residual renal

function will be the major focus of this session. As chronickidney disease progresses, a major focus in patient care ispreserving the patient’s remaining renal function. This sessionwill examine how we should be working to preserve thatfunction as early as possible. The effect of various modalitieson preserving residual function and the implications forindividual patients also will be addressed. (Pharmacology: 45minutes)

Profession Jean Jenkins, PhD, RN, FAAN

The Genome Project has changed – and will continue tochange – the way that medical treatment is designed forpatients. Dr. Jenkins from the National Institutes of Health willdiscuss the impact of this research on the nursing profession.She will share the concepts found in the Essential CoreCompetencies and Curricula Guidelines for Genetics andGenomics, which is guiding education and practice for thenursing profession, and relate these competencies to thepractice of nephrology nursing. 112: When It Rains It Pours: Know Your Water System – MGMT

Matthew Arduino, DrPH, MSWhat do you know about the water system you use for

dialysis? This session will examine the components of watersystems, the testing required by the Association for theAdvancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and thepotential contaminants in water supplies that can affect testresults. The effects of contaminants on patients also will beexplored. If you are a clinical manager or a staff nurse workingin dialysis, you won’t want to miss this informative session.

113: Stop the Train: Applying Critical Thinking Skills – CP, ℞

Mary Schira, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, CNN-NPThis interactive session will challenge you to apply your

critical care thinking abilities to various patient scenarios.Participants will work together to determine when moreinformation is needed in a particular case and when treatmentshould be initiated or stopped. Tracy Anderson-Haag is a favorite speaker at ANNAconferences, and this time she will be discussing antibiotics usedto treat infections in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).The session will cover dosing, management strategies, and howthese change as CKD progresses. She also will focus on thespecial considerations for antibiotic use in dialysis and transplantpatients. (Pharmacology: 90 minutes)

Amyloidosis is a syndrome that has negative consequencesfor renal function. Although not common, individuals caringfor renal patients should be aware of this disease and itspathophysiology. This session will focus on the disease andtreatment strategies related to the associated kidneyimpairment. The role of the advanced practice nurse will bestressed throughout this presentation. (Pharmacology: 30 minutes)

132: Professionalism in the Workplace – MGMT Rowena Elliott, PhD, RN, CNN, BC, CNE

ANNA President Rowena Elliott will lead a discussionabout the concept of professionalism and its relation to theworkplace. What happens when there is a lack ofprofessionalism in the workplace? And what can you do aboutit? Dr. Elliott will address these questions and share the positiveinfluences of a workplace that exhibits professionalism.

133: Rhabdomyolysis – CP, ℞ Marius Florescu, MD

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome that occurs when musclehas been damaged, releasing myoglobin into the bloodstreamand potentially damaging the glomerulus. This session willexplore the various causes of rhabdomyolysis, treatment, andthe potential long-term consequences of this syndrome. You’llbe surprised at which of your patients are at risk for thisdevastating problem. (Pharmacology: 30 minutes)

134: Assessing Competency to Consent to Treatment – H

Phillip Russell, JDHow do you know if a patient is legally capable of making

decisions about his/her treatment plan? What are the legalcriteria for assessing a patient’s ability to make decisions abouthis/her care? This session will address these questions andinclude a discussion of cases in the news that have touched onthese issues. The session will provide valuable informationabout what to consider when devising a treatment plan basedon a patient’s ability to make decisions.

141: Electrolytes and Acid-Base Abnormalities inChronic Kidney Disease – AP, ℞

Joy Logan, MDFluid and electrolytes are in the forefront of treatment

plans for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Thissession will review the structure and function of the kidneys andwhat happens when there is an imbalance in the fluid andelectrolyte levels. Time will be spent developing treatment plansfor these imbalances based on an analysis of individual patientdata. (Pharmacology: 30 minutes)

142: Moral Courage and the Nurse Leader – MGMT J. Cole Edmonson, MS, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC

What is moral courage? And what is moral distress?Nursing leaders experience both of these but often do notrecognize them! Determining the sources of moral distress andcourage in nurse leaders will follow a discussion of these terms.An important component of this session will be an examinationof the role of ethical decision making in developing andpromoting moral courage.

143: Periodontal Diseases in Chronic KidneyDisease – CP, ℞

Madhukar Misra, MD, FASN, FACP, FRCPResearch has shed evidence on the role of periodontal

disease in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) andheart disease. Yet, evidence also shows that an assessment ofthe mouth and teeth is rarely performed on a continuing basisby health care providers other than dentists. This session willfocus on the relationship among periodontal disease, systemicinflammation, and increased mortality in patients and will wrapup with a discussion of treatment and prevention plans.(Pharmacology: 30 minutes)

144: Recommended Immunizations for Childrenand Adults – H

Karen Dibling, BSNImmunizations are an important part of any care plan for

chronically ill patients. The immunization schedule that shouldbe part of the care plan for patients with chronic kidney disease(CKD) will be discussed as well as the appropriate use of twovaccines in CKD patients. Resources to assist clinicians inmanaging the current immunization recommendations also willbe shared. (Pharmacology: 90 minutes)

212: All Hazards Big and Small: Are You Preparedto Respond? – MGMT

Loretta Jackson Brown, PhDc, RN, CNNHow do you stay prepared for unexpected events? How

do you prepare for a disaster that may never occur? Thissession will address these questions as well as the importanceof varying types of hazard preparedness. Determining disasterrisk and tips for collaborating with partners and stakeholdersto mitigate the effects of disasters also will be covered.

213: Peritoneal Dialysis in the Non-Renal Patient – CP

Pranay Kathuria, MDThis session will focus on the rationale of using peritoneal

dialysis (PD) in patients who do not have renal disease. Theneed for clear documentation of PD use to ensure reim -bursement in these cases will be stressed. Finally, the cost-benefit issues associated with the use of a renal replacementmodality in non-renal patients will be addressed.

214: Herbal Use in Patients with Chronic KidneyDisease – H, ℞

Lisa Cranwell-Bruce, MS, RN, FNP-C, APRNThe use of herbal and nutrient supplements is popular

today. What are the most commonly prescribed herbalsupplements? And what are the pharmacologic effects of thesesupplements? These are just two of the major points that willbe covered in this session. The potential interaction of herbalsupplements with the medications taken by patients withchronic kidney disease also will be discussed. (Pharmacology:90 minutes)

How do we keep patients satisfied? And what does it meanif they are (or aren’t)? This expert speaker will help youdetermine the characteristics of your customer population. Hewill then compare and contrast various tools for measuringcustomer satisfaction and will discuss how to strategicallyimplement a plan for your workplace based on customersatisfaction survey findings.

223: Renal Transplantation and Delayed GraftFunction – CP

Lynn McCoy, RN, CNNWhen a patient receives a renal transplant, the assumption

is that everything will work as expected. However, sometimesthings do not go as expected. Risk factors that may contributeto the development of delayed graft function will be discussed.Essential nursing care for the patient with delayed graft functionin the acute and chronic settings also will be addressed.

224: Quality of Life for Chronic Kidney DiseasePatients – H

Frederic Finkelstein, MDPatients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) contend with

quality of life issues. This session will focus on the mostcommon quality of life issues and their effect on the mortalityrate in patients with CKD. A case study of a patient withneurologic complications from renal disease will provide anexample of the profound opportunity that nephrology nurseshave to address quality of life issues.

Continuing Nursing EducationGain continuing nursing education (CNE) credit for your

professional development, recertification, and relicensure. Earn12.75 contact hours (CH) for the Fall Meeting. Additional credit isavailable for attending optional preconference workshops: 6.0 CHfor full-day workshops and 3.25 for half-day workshops. If corporatesupport is received for the pending symposium, additional contacthours will be offered.

Sessions marked with ℞ contain pharmacology content that canbe applied toward pharmacology credit requirements. Pharmacologycontent credit is time-based on the objectives and content outline.Pharmacology credit of 345 minutes is possible to be accumulated(if attending sessions offering the highest number of pharmacologyminutes available). Additional pharmacology credit is available frompreconference workshops where indicated.

ANNA urges participants to be aware of the CNE requirementsfor relicensure in the states in which they hold a license. ANNA is aprovider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing,provider number CEP 00910.

Thefee is $50 and entitles the guest to visit the Exhibit Hall. Guest feesdo not include admission to meal functions or corporate-sponsoredsymposia. Exhibitor RegistrationExhibitors receive exhibit badges for their booth personnel as

part of their exhibit participation. Exhibitors with badges are grantedaccess to most educational sessions on a space available basis,excluding meal functions and corporate-sponsored events. One nurseper exhibit booth (employed full-time by exhibiting company) mayapply for CNE credit for the programs attended and will receive anexhibitor’s badge unless he/she registers separately as a meetingattendee. ANNA encourages corporate nurses to register separatelyfor the meeting and pay the standard registration fees since exhibitorsdo not receive the same benefits as paid registrants.

Payment PolicyNo registrations will be processed unless full payment is received

with the registration form. If a check is returned by the bank forinsufficient funds, full payment must be received by cashier’s checkor money order and must include an additional $25 for bankprocessing charges. If payment is not received by the national officeprior to the meeting, the registrant must pay the full amount onsitebefore the registration will be processed. If you do not receive aconfirmation letter a week prior to the meeting, please contact thenational office (888-600-2662 or 856-256-2320) to confirm receiptof your registration. If you have requested payment through yourfacility/employer, check with the facility/employer to be sure theyhave processed the payment. You will be responsible for theregistration fee onsite if your facility did not send the money inadvance. Purchase orders (including government purchase orders)are not an acceptable form of payment.

Refund PolicyNo telephone cancellations will be accepted. Written

notice of cancellation must be sent to the ANNA National Office,East Holly Avenue Box 56, Pitman, NJ 08071-0056 (fax856-218-0557). A $50 administrative fee will be assessed onall cancellations received in writing and must reach theoffice no later than September 5, 2011. No refunds will beissued after this deadline. WeatherA typical day in Atlanta in September varies from 65 to 80
