Dependable Distributed & NetworkedSystems LabFaculty: Anish Arora http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~anish/

Central Goal 99% users (including devices and businesses) should be able to communicate

securely and reliably 99% of the time requires scalable end-to-end dependability, which is still lacking

Focus Large-scale wireless sensor networks Internet-based distributed systems

Approach Theory limits and graph/geometric algorithms

for low power distributed computing/networking/sensing Self-stabilization Model-based control of systems (using formal methods)

DDNS Lab

Impact Kansei interactive heterogenous large-scale WSN testbed; 2007 ExScal and A Line In The Sand: sensor network based classification

and tracking of persons, persons carrying “guns”, vehicles, tanks; 2004 Aladdin home networking system, built at Microsoft Research,

showcased in PBS serial; 2000 NetraProxy internet server, commercially sold by Sun; 1997

DDNS Lab Current Status

1. Apply ideas in experimental settings: Cellphone based sensor network project (involving Motorola/Nokia)

with focus on MAC, routing, localization Secure WSN fabrics, with Java motes (involving SUN) and with ARO Integrating sensor networks with enterprises (involving Microsoft SensorMap) High level programming languages (DESAL, with NSF)

2. OSU recognized as leader in WSN research and facilities: Kansei being expanded to include 1000 TMotes, 100+ Imote2s, 200 SunSPOTs ExScal remains among largest experiments conducted ISS (Institute for Sensor Systems) has started operation, increasingly

fellowships/internships support will be available through it, and an ExScal-like WSN project with Los Alamos is anticipated

Ad Hoc Mobile Wireless NetworkingFaculty: Steve Lai http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~lai/

IEEE 802.11 is the most widely deployed standard for wireless LANs. We are interested in its scalability issue, i.e., we are aiming to answer the

question: “Can they support large-scale, multi-hop ad hoc networks?”

Particularly, we are working on the following topics:o Is IEEE 802.11 scalable? o Time sync in multihop ad hoc networks o Is time sync essential for power saving?o Constructing connected dominating sets by way of clock synchronizationo Coverage and Connectivity in Sensor Networks
