Exercise - ScriptIt’s evening. The light from outside is still able to illuminate the basketball court. As though there is some mysterious force guiding it, the ball bounces from one end of the court to the other end. And slowly comes to a halt.

Whip Out That Sketch Book! It’s time to draw!

Page 30: Animation Basics

The Bouncing Ball.Timing and Spacing:The Bouncing Ball is a good example of timing and spacing. The impacts- where the ball is hitting the ground- that’s the timing of the action.

Page 31: Animation Basics

The Bouncing Ball. And spacing: the ball overlaps itself when its at the slow part of its arc, but when it drops fast, its spaced further apart. That’s the Spacing.

Page 32: Animation Basics

Bouncing BallThe two basic elements of animation.

Page 33: Animation Basics

Squash and StretchThe Bouncing ball is often used to show animation ‘squash and stretch’- that is , the ball elongates as it falls, flattens on impact with the ground and then returns to its normal shape in the slower part of the arc.

Let’s Animate!Create a new Toon Boom documentCall it Bouncing Ball

Page 36: Animation Basics

Try It YourselfHow would you animate the bouncing ball in Toon Boom?

Page 37: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial1. Rename the drawing layer to arc2. Draw a horizontal line across the scene

Page 38: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial3. Draw 4 ellipses (simulate bounce). The camera should cut the first arc in

half

Page 39: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial4. Delete the lower end of arcs that fall under the line

Page 40: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial5. Create a new drawing layer. Call it background6. Lock the arc and background layers7. Create a new layer. Rename it to sketch-keyPoses8. Reorder the layer stack: arc on top of sketch-keyPoses and sketch-

keyPoses on top of background

Page 41: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial9. In the sketch-keyPoses layer, mark the points for the key poses

10. Extend Exposure for the arc and sketch-keyPoses layers to Frame 60

Page 42: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial11. Create a new layer and call it sketch-ball12. Using the brush tool draw a representation of your ball at the marks in

sketch-keyPoses

Page 43: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial13. Each circle should be created in a new frame

NB: Number your drawing14. Test your animation

Page 44: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial15. Add frames before and after Frames 5, 13, 21, and before Frame 29 to

accommodate squash and squeeze (or for the frames that hit the ground)

NB: Start from the right and work your way to the left16. Duplicate Drawing for the additional frames

Page 45: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial17. Create a new layer and call it sketch-squashNsqueeze18. Using the brush tool draw a representation of your ball at the marks in

sketch-ball (NB: each circle in a different frame)

Page 46: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial19. Make sketch-ball unseen20. Test your animationNB: Notice that the bounce looks more realistic because the ball is no longer a circle and the extra frames for when the ball hits the ground

20. Create a new layer. Rename it to ball.21. With the ball layer active, create a perfect circle

Page 47: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial23. Move the circle to the beginning of your bounce path (arcs)

Page 48: Animation Basics

Bouncing Ball Tutorial24. Extend the exposure to the next frame25. Duplicate the drawing26. Scale and rotate the previous circle according to sketch-squashNsqueezeNB: Use the centre of the circle to place the circle over your mark

27. Repeat steps 24 to 26 and work your way to the last frame from sketch-squashNsqueeze

28. Fill each circle with a colour of your choosing29. Unlock the background layer and create a scene of your choosing30. Preview animation31. Export movie

Challenge: Bouncing Ball1. Simulate a falling heavy ball2. Give your ball some details and/or add a

scene
