Welcome to the 2019 School Year at Mano
Another school year has kicked off with great excitement, enthusiasm and goodwill.
Teachers and Support Staff have been back at work early preparing for the return of students - preparing classrooms together with a host of administrative matters which needed to be completed. Students have commenced classes and the ‘feeling’ around the learning communities has been settled and focused.
We have welcomed some new students who have transferred from other schools and hope they can settle into Mano routines and expectations smoothly.
In 2019 we have four ‘new’ staff members – Mr Churchill (Grade 2), Ms Stapleton (Middles), Ms Bruce (Seniors) and Ms Schuster (returning from Family Leave and working in the Dance/Drama/Music specialist area). Together as a school community we can and will achieve great things throughout 2019. Our ongoing focus is and should be to ensure that all students feel safe, are happy and are evidently learning and progressing.
Mano has an Annual Improvement Plan which outlines some clear targets for attention, one of which is Numeracy and it will be supported by our newly funded two Maths Specialist staff positions (Mr Fleming working across Grades 3-6 and Mr Hambrook in P-2).
Working Bee, Sunday 27th January
Many thanks to the families who supported this recent event. New softfall mulch was spread around the adventure playground on this morning, as shown in the photos. Our quarterly Working Bees (on the last Sunday before each school term commences) really do help us to tackle some grounds improvement projects together with general school yard clean-ups. Whilst our part time gardener does a fabulous job, these Working Bees make a terrific difference and I acknowledge the community spirit of those who make a commitment to attend, especially the kids who join in!
Mano Family BBQ Thursday 21st February, 5:30pm
Our School Council looks forward to hosting this annual event – a welcome to the new school year Family BBQ.
Further details will be published but with some advanced notice, we hope school community members can keep the date free.
We hope you can come along and enjoy a free BBQ supplied dinner and take the opportunity to mingle with other parents and also to meet your child’s classroom teacher in an informal setting. Planning for some live music, Canteen sales of ice-creams and drinks are also underway.
Curriculum Information Evening Sessions – Week 5, Term 1
Parents are encouraged to attend these important sessions from 6:30pm – 7:30pm on the following evenings:
Prep – Monday 25th February Grade 1 and 2s – Tuesday 26th February Middles – Wednesday 27th February Seniors – Thursday 28th February
At these sessions classroom teachers will share details of daily school routines, curriculum arrangements, assessment and reporting, homework and alike.
It will also be a chance to visit classrooms and catch up with classroom teachers.
After the first four weeks of Term 1, we anticipate parents will be more likely to have some questions and queries needing to be clarified, hence the scheduling.
Student Supervision Before and After School
Department of Education & Training policy requires our school grounds to be supervised 10 minutes before classes commence and 10 minutes after classes are dismissed each day (so from 8:50am and until 3:40pm). Staff are scheduled to supervise the school grounds accordingly each day. Students who are at school earlier or later than the supervised times should be enrolled in the Before and After School Care Program (contact Camp Australia, who provide this service at Mano). We inform students that if parents are running late to pick them up after school, they should report to the General Office.
Student Absence Policy
All student absences from school must be explained and communicated to the school. Schooling is compulsory for children aged from 6-17 years, unless formal exemption has been sought and granted. All absences need to be explained and schools are expected to determine if the explanation provided is a reasonable excuse for the purposes of the parent meeting their responsibilities under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Schools must maintain attendance records, identify and follow up unexplained absences, and develop policies to support and maintain attendance. We appreciate parents diligently informing us about all student absences and we will commit to contacting parents in cases where such contact from home has not been made. Maximising student attendance and hence achievement is the goal for all. Continuity of learning and in relationships is so beneficial for young students.
The General Office should be notified of any absences by phone or using Compass. Any parents requiring assistance with using Compass to report student absences are asked to contact the General Office staff.

DIGITAL TATTOO
PARENT/CARER INFORMATION SESSION (All Parents Welcome)
Middle Department Hub
Wednesday 13th February, 6:30pm - 8pm
Young People live in an amazing world, they seamlessly move between their ‘online world’ and ‘living directly world’. As a
community this can create some in trepidation as they baffle us with their speed and connectivity, take risks and sometimes
make mistakes.
The success of the Digital Tattoo project is in the strength of the school-family partnership. By providing education to
students, teachers and parents/carers at the same time the project aims to begin a number of conversations which will
continue long after the project is finished.
This session is a chance for parents and carers to come together and look at how Young People use their Digital Space
and
explore opportunities to support them whilst they navigate and build their skills online.
The session runs for 90 mins is interactive and aims to build knowledge and skills for families.
TOPICS INCLUDE
From YouTube to social media, gaming to SnapChat we will talk about looking out for your mates, the importance
of strong role modeling, conversation starters for home, monitoring gaming habits, gambling and all things online.
FEEDBACK FORM PARENTS/CARERS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THIS SESSION –

well. Loads of great ideas and communicated in an accessible and humourous way. A fun evening! Thanks for keeping up

‘Learning that prohibition doesn’t work.’ ‘Funny, entertaining, informative’ ‘Lots of practical tips delivered in an accessible
way’
