BrochureDescription: A full-color, duplex, folding promotional brochure

Date:December 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign

Objectives:The purpose of this project was demonstrate ability to

set up and align a two-sided, folding document. The

brochure required an original logo, quality images that

utilized text wrapping, and original copy content.

Process:I began by creating a new logo in Adobe Illustrator

for the Blue Bamboo Yoga Studio. I chose typography

that was appropriate for a Yoga Studio, and resembled

bamboo. I used the pen tool to create bamboo leaves andcolored them using a very slight gradient.

Next I used Adobe InDesign and created a tri-fold duplex

layout. I chose images that were clean and within the

color scheme that I was working with and placed them in

the brochure. I used the pen tool to create curved edges

to shapes and image containers creating flow through

the document.

In Photoshop I used the quick selection tool to make a

clean selection of the girl doing yoga, using the refine

edge option with smart radius, smooth, feather, contrast

and edge shift tools. I then placed the image intoInDesign and wrapped the text around the image.

I created a table and used rectangles in the color scheme

to represent the different classes at the studio. I created

hierarchy within the body copy by using typography to

represent different sections, and lead the viewer through

the document.

MagazineDescription: A full-color, two page magazine spread

Date:December 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop and InDesign

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to create an original

magazine spread utilizing appropriate typography, white

space, alignment and imagery.

Process:I created a two page layout in InDesign. After choosing

the images I used Photoshop color picker to select the

shades of pink to use for the design elements. I used a

large clean title font with a contrasting subtitle and body

copy typeface.

I added a drop cap in pink to add visual interest to the

body copy and placed the rectangle across both pages for

unity.

StationaryDescription: An original logo and matching stationary

Date:November 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:The purpose of this project was demonstrate proficiency

with basic tools in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Logo and stationary designs should be consistent,

appropriately sized, and portray professionalism.

Process:I began by sketching out some ideas for a logo, and after

deciding on a general idea started creating in Adobe

Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create the spoon,

turban and the structure (which is patterned afterthe background design). In Adobe InDesign I created

an 8.5 x 11 document and added the background at

10% opacity and followed suggestions to fade to white

towards the logo to simplify the overall design and

remove competition with the logo. I added the logo and

the contact information to the upper left corner. By

right aligning the contact information I found it followed

the pattern of the structure in the logo adding visual

interest. I then added asymmetry by placing a tagline in

both Hindi (which is beautiful in itself) and English.

Business CardDescription: A business card with original logo

Date:November 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:The purpose of this project was demonstrate proficiency

with basic tools in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Logo, business cards and stationary designs should be

consistent, maintain branding and portray a professional

appearance across projects.

Process:For this business card I used the exact layout of the

stationary (see previous page) for repetition and brand

identity. On the back side, I contrasted the backgroundpattern by using a much darker value of blue. I repeated

the tagline on the back of the card in contrasting white.

Overall, I used fonts that were easy to read, but still

added a hint of ethnicity to the design.

LogosDescription: An original logo design with variations in full-color,

greyscale, and inverse color

Date:October 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:The purpose of this project was create three completely

different logos, conduct market research to determine

most widely appealing design, and then refine that

design with variations for color.

Process:I started by sketching out a few ideas that came to

mind relating to the company name Banānē – the Hindi

word for create. The company is a web and graphicdesign company. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the

logo. The feather was created using the pencil tool and

drawing each individual feather strand. The line tool

was used to create the base of the feather, and the ellipse

tool was used to create the circular aspects at the head

of the feather. I also used the pen tool to alter the very

center ellipse into the shape commonly found on peacock

feathers.

Coloring the feather with a gradient added a layer of

dimension and authenticity to the feather. I then colored

the logo in greyscale and white on a colored background

to demonstrate what it would look like on a coloredbackground such as a t-shirt or other screen printed

product to show the versatility of the logo.

Web PageDescription: A web page designed to showcase an original logo and

demonstrate knowledge of HTML and CSS

Date:November 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop, TextWrangler

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to size and optimize an

original logo for a web page, write content to describe

the logo creation process, and present that information

using HTML and CSS. Color matching between the

website and the logo should be exact.

Process:Using Text Wrangler – a text editing software – I created

this web page using both HTML and CSS. Code writingwas validated using the W3.org validator to verify

correct coding. For this project a generic CSS stylesheet

was provided. I linked the CSS stylesheet to the HTML

document.

I used Adobe Photoshop to determine hex colors from

my original logo and used those in my CSS to match

the web page style with my logo’s color theme. I also

adjusted the padding and alignment of my logo for better

positioning and white space. I added a background

image and repeated it for seamless and consistent tiling/

flow. I pulled my fonts from Google fonts to provide a

universally viewable font that was both appropriate formy design and visually appealing. Text colors were also

matched to the logo.

Event AdDescription: A full-bleed color event ad which utilizes only Microsoft

Word, and must include a scanned image.

Date:October 2015

Programs Used:Microsoft Word

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to comprehend image

sizing, utilize a scanner, create a full-bleed design,

and discover the power inherent to Microsoft Word in

creating print material.

Process:I first scanned the chameleon image from the National

Geographic, then utilizing Microsoft Word layout

publishing option created an ad benefitting theMetropolitan Zoo Reptile House. I used a rectangle for

the green background with underlying texture, and

added red and yellow accent lines to bring out the colors

of the chameleon’s eyes and add visual interest. I created

the logo for the fictitious Metropolitan Zoo. I used

two fonts, although both from the Oldstyle category to

convey a sense of elegance and sophistication. The right

alignment of text also adds appeal. I used a fade-to-

transparent gradient on the horizontal rectangle to allow

maximum visability of the chameleon focal point.

MontageDescription: A montage poster with an uplifting message.

Date:October 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to demonstrate good

design process with a strong focal point and flow, blend

two or more images using masks, and utilize more

advanced skills using Photoshop.

Process:For this project I used three images: a night sky, a

sunrise, and a girl praying. Using Adobe Photoshop I

applied layer masks to each image to non-destructively

removed parts of each image to blend the pixels togetherforming one cohesive image relevant to the message.

For each image mask I used black paint at 100% opacity

to remove the hard edges of each image. They used

varying degrees of opacity (50%, 30% and 10%) to more

gradually blend the pixels together. I also added a lens

flare filter to portray the brightness of the sunrise as if

we were capturing the image with a camera.

The right-aligned text is presented with two contrasting

typefaces in varying weights for emphasis. I also used

an overlay filter to allow the background sunbeams to

have more prominence in the overall message.

PhotodesignDescription: A full-bleed, full-color 8.5”x11” poster that has a

consistent color scheme, and uses an original high-

quality digital photo and created using Photoshop.

Date:October 2015

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to learn basic

photography skills, utilize a color scheme to set up a

shot, and create a layout using that color scheme.

Process:I first chose an analogous Green-Blue-Teal color scheme

then headed to our local beach to take photos with my

Canon Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera. I used the fourbasic edits (Levels-Vibrance-Selective Color-Sharpen)

to bring the colors of the photo more in line with color

scheme I had chosen. I created vertical rectangles in the

three colors and, using the pen tools options, created a

wavy edge to them for repetition on the ocean theme.

For contrast I added the lighter value wavy elements.

For additional texture I layered a horizontal wave

background and significantly dropped the opacity.

For the text I used the lighter values of the color scheme.

The title font is in contrasting typefaces surrounding a

unifying sailboat design element. The italic word “sail”

aligns nicely with the actual sail lines and mast in thephotograph. On the right I repeated the sailboat design

element to highlight the color scheme. The swatches and

their labels are placed vertically along the edge to repeat

the alignment of the mast in the photo.

FlierDescription: A black and white informational flier using information,

a logo, and an image provided.

Date:October 2015

Programs Used: Adobe InDesign

Objectives:The purpose of this project was to apply basic design

principles including alignment, proximity, repetition,

gestalt, and effective message communication.

Process: After creating several sketches, I used my favorite

ideas from those sketches to create a flyer using Adobe

InDesign. I used two contrasting, yet complimentaryfonts communicate the message. The black-to-grey

circles are situated asymmetrically creating balance

while adding an element of repetition to the design. I

aligned text with the title and the image. The title was

designed to appear as if bleeding onto the page, and

the the contrasting “conference” overlaps to add visual

interest.
