CourseOverviewandObjectives
CulturalAnthropologyisinauniquepositiontoexaminevariationinhumanbehaviorandpsychological
functioningindifferentsocialandphysicalenvironments.Thiscourseisacross-culturalsurveyofhumancognition,perception,personality,socializationpractices,mentalhealth,andtherelationshipbetweenthe
individualandculture,focusingonthesimilaritiesanddifferencesofthesephenomenaacrosssocieties.We
willbeginwithahistoricaloverviewofthedisciplineasaspecificsubfieldofculturalanthropology,beginning
withitsrootsinpsychoanalysis,thedevelopmentoftheculturalandpersonalityschool,andmovingtoward
morecontemporaryapproachesanddirectionsinthediscipline.Inadditionafocusontheoretical
perspectivesinpsychologicalanthropology,wewillalsoaddressmethodologicalissuesuniqueto
psychologicalanthropology.

Lindholmisourprimarytextandwillprovideuswithageneraloverviewofvarioustrendsanddevelopments
inpsychologicalanthropology.Freud,Scheper-Hughes,andLuhrmannprovidein-depthexaminationsof
specificthreadsinthediscipline.Muchofourreading,however,willcomefromtheprimaryliterature,andso
willbeavailableas.pdffiles,whichbedistributedthroughElearning.
ExamsandGradingParticipation .Becausethisisareasonablysmallclass,thisclasswillbeconductedinadiscussion-oriented
format.Noonewantstolistentometalkforthreehoursaweek,believeme.Generally,Iwillprovidealistof
questionsanddiscussionpointsthatwillhelpusthrougheachweeksreadings.Ienvisionclassesasmore
likedebatesratherthanlectures,focusedonquestions,suchaswhatarethestrengthsandlimitationsofa
psychoanalyticapproachtounderstandingculturalbehavior?;Whatisthenatureoftheselfandits

relationshiptoculture?;orwhatarethelimitationsofanthropologicalapproachestounderstanding
psychologicalphenomena?;ineachcase,thereadingsformthebasisofthediscussion.Thisisnotapassive
classroom.Todowell,asastudentyouwillneedtoactivelyengageintheclassdiscussions.
Graduatestudentswillbeemployedsomewhatdifferently.Inadditiontogeneralparticipationinclass
discussions,oneperiodperweekwillbedevotedtograduatestudentsleadingthediscussionofaparticular
reading.Therewillbeplentyofchoice;eachgraduatestudentwillpresentatleasttwiceduringthesemesterandwillhavetheoptionofpresentingmaterialofparticularinterest.
Alloftheseendeavorsfallunderparticipation,andallstudentswillreceiveagrade(100ptstotal)that
summarizescontributionstotheclass.
Exams.Therewillbetwoexams,amid-termandafinal.Eachisworth100points.Examswillconsistofa
combinationofshortanswersandlongessayquestions.Bothexamswillbetake-homeandopenbook,due
onthedateslistedbelow.Igenerallyhandouttheexamaweekor10daysbeforetheduedate.
ResearchPaper.Undergraduatestudentsarerequiredtowritea14-16pagepaperonatopicbasedon
psychologicalanthropology.Thereisagreatdealofleewayhere,buttopicsshouldbeapproved
beforehand;thus,paperproposalsareduewellaheadofthepaperduedate.Thetermpaperisworth100
points.Detailswillbeforthcomingatoursecondclassmeeting.If14-16pagesseemslikealot,considerthatgraduatestudentpapersshouldbemanuscriptlength(20+pages).
FinalGrades.Finalgradesareassignedoutof400points(100forparticipation,100foreachexam,and100

multiplesubmissions(submittingthesameworkfordifferentcourses)willleadtotheDepartmentsandthe
