I dedicate this book to my family.

At the top of the mountain in the grassy African Planes, King Lion hungrily searches for food. It is dawn. All the animals are about to wake up. Suddenly he hears something from behind….crunch-crunch. King Lion slowly moves his head toward the sound. He smells and hears his Prey.

The sun is starting to rise and birds are tweeting in the sky. King Lion spots his Prey. It’s a buffalo eating grass nearby. The buffalo sees him too. King Lion is very hungry. He gets ready to strike. As he takes the first step, the buffalo gets scared and starts to run. King Lion follows.

The buffalo runs as fast as he can. Suddenly he finds bushes that he can hide in. He peeks out to see if the Lion is gone. He is very frightened. Very quietly he steps out and then…..

King Lion jumps out of the grass and surprises the buffalo. King Lion starts to chase his prey, but then the buffalo trips on a rock and rolls down the small hill.

King Lion jumps over the small hill and kills the buffalo. Finally, as the sun slowly sets, King Lion lies down and enjoys his meal.

About the Author

My name is Andre Marcos. I am in Mrs. Mattson’s 3rd grade class. I enjoy playing basketball and doing math. I live at home with my mom, dad, brother, and sister. I had lots of fun making this book.

This is one of the many books that came to life while students in Mrs.

Mattson’s 3rd grade class explored the rich relationship between visual imagery

and the written word. This book was created as a part of Image-Making Within

the Writing Process, a dynamic art-and-literature-based approach to writing

developed by Beth Olshansky at the University of New Hampshire. Image-Making

uses hand-painted textured papers as the raw materials for creating collage

stories and poetry. Unlike a more traditional writing process, within Image-

Making the pictures always come first. This offers students with diverse learning

styles essential visual and kinesthetic tools for rehearsing, drafting, and

revising their ideas long before setting pencil to paper. Image-Making was

validated by the US Department of Education as an “innovative and effective

literacy program” in 1993. Today children around the world use this process to

create books in many languages.
