Could You Escape? It was very difficult for a prisoner to escape from Andersonville. Only a few

prisoners were able to escape and return home. An escaping prisoner had to travel

many miles through unfamiliar, enemy territory. Food was hard to find along theescape route and dogs tracked down the runaway prisoners.

Your goal is to help this escaped prisoner find his way home.

    Write A Letter

Adam Swarner, the first prisoner to die at Andersonville, sent a letter home to his wife. His letter included some of his greatest difficulties and names of other prisoners

that his wife knew. The letters were often short and may have been read byhis captors. Imagine that you are a prisoner of war. It has been months since you

were allowed to write a message home. Write a letter to a relative or friend, describing how you are being treated and how you are feeling.

Just remember, your letter may be read by a guard also.
