it’s bigger than just paper; it’s ideas.

[vol. 2] what’s inside:

Born James Benjamin Armature the Third, Slim Jim stands still. Standing is what Slim does. It is his life’s greatest joy and he prides himself on his ability to hold things in the same position for long periods

of time. He stands indefinitely, and the longer he stands the happier he is. If it were up to him, he would never move– he would just stand, in the same position, forever. But inevitably his

stand gives way– it must give way to a changing environment or an omniscient hand that coerces his limbs into new positions. After all, he has a job to do. He must hold things very still for as long as it is deemed necessary. Maybe it is not so much a job as a calling because it is so much in line with Slim’s disposition, and the only thing that gives Slim greater joy than standing is holding and standing, indefinitely of course.

But I wouldn’t want you to mistake Slim’s still standing for laziness or indifference, because the art of standing still is subtle and vigorous. It is a multifarious activity in all of its verbal compositions:

Slim stands up, stands on, stands in, stands down, stands for, and he is not only standing,

who has been instrumental in the creation of the pamphlet and any success it has enjoyed. He has graciously offered us his time, resources, and ideas. This small book is modeled after work he has done previously. There is no way this project fits into his schedule, and yet he has never missed a beat in helping us get this bird into flight. Thanks C.U.

who supported us from the moment we walked into the office and only made us take the project more seriously. “No” would have been an understandable answer. Instead it was more like “have you thought of this?”

who, likewise, never thought twice, and has continued the support and encouragement of Tom before her. She has been supportive of the project in every way.

&regrets:

synecdoche design website

page numbers

ReFab quote

apartment farmer quote

we regrettably spelled the website wrong in volume 1. It reads “synechdochedesign.com”, but should read “synecdochedesign.com” (no “h”). Sincere apologies, as that is a vital piece of information.

(the first one is bound to have problems, right?)

the folding at the press was something we could not properly anticipate, and the page numbers didn’t turn out quite right. Hopefully we’ve ironed it out this time.

“Interestingly enough,” we gaffed on the quote for Paul, Brian, and McLean’s project for ReFab. They provided a very well written, intelligent, and articulate quote for us to use, and we instead decided, subconsciously of course, to stick with the goofy, ill-conceived quote that I made up. Sorry, guys. I’m the one that sounds like an idiot, not you.

again, we messed up a quote. There was a brilliant piece of writing that Les Key had on his blog; it put the project in exactly the right light, and we accidentally left if off. Sincere apologies, Les.

but bearing as well. And all of his bearing and stillness and different kinds of standing keeps Slim infinitely busy; there is never enough time for Slim to stand for as long and in as many ways as he would like.

Pondering the many ways of standing, Slim’s eye spots movement below. But he doesn’t track it– this would go against his still nature. He is now alert and hopeful that it will pass again so that he can catch another glimpse of that fleeting instance– catch it again in his lens, so that he can consume it like a beam of sunlight through a magnifying glass consumes an ant.

He returns to himself, aware of the heat on his metallic crown. He wishes this nurturing heat would extend through his entirety, making more pleasurable the stillness of the red light that he basks in.

Building facades are static, and beyond weathering, often unchanging andnon-performative. Inherent Reactions is the study of a potential facadesystem that is animated by external forces. A sponge becomes wet andexpands; it dries and contracts. If seeds enter a sponge’s pores, itbecomes a medium for growth. As plants die, nutrients are injected in the sponge. This cycle is repetitive and inherent in the nature of the sponge;the study explores its reactions.

...a park designed around an existing stalled, underdeveloped construction site. Using only construction site materials, the park aims to maintain the imaginative, exploratory nature of a construction site, as opposed to defaulting to standard playground and park materials and constructions.

My site, which spans the north 4th block at Bedford Ave, is a gutted open pavilion like structure lingering in a moment of transition. Complete demolition of the existing infrastructure was never completed. Its desires to lie between wanting to be its past and the possibility of becoming its future. I am intervening at this exact moment of transition where there is no projected outcome. The outcome for me in the likely next step: dismantling the site. The basic organizational structure of an industrial space, one that once facilitated the production of goods and services, will now facilitate a re-sensitization for the Williamsburg public through constant material animation. The materials specific to this site are embedded with desires which will cause the dismantle, in stages, eventually ending in a re-mantling of a lighter, yet looming ground.

a third floor phenomenon, the beard-off was a grassroots effort at camaraderie and a collective thumb-of-the-nose at the bitter Michigan winter. Not unlike male emperor penguins who huddle together for warmth and survival over the long, dark antarctic winter, the beards got us through.

The campaign saw guerilla advertising, plenty of smirks and laughs, and lots of itchy faces.

Here’s to all you brave souls that said “no” to proper grooming for nearly two months. It was well, well worth it.

(opposite: “the propaganda”)

It’s called “Studio Blocks”. Basically everyone got assign a block divided from a larger cube. The mission is to make a marble container out of the block and finally all the blocks should come together and got assembled back into the lager cube.

The Final System Drawing tries to blur the actual form of the studio blocks and draw out its overall relationship: thefacades, the movement of marbles and the lock with neighbor, in anabstract way.
