Adeline and Albert lived in a big tree. The squirrels were born in a nest built on a strong branch. No wind could break it, no rain could ruin it. The sun didn’t burn because of the generous leaves that felt like an umbrella, and it wasn’t so cold in winter. It was the perfect home, said mom, and the squirrels loved it.

Adeline y Albert vivían en un árbol grande. Las ardillas nacieron en un nido construído en una rama fuerte. El viento no podía romperlo, ni la lluvia podía arruinarlo. El sol no quemaba por las generosas hojas que eran como una sombrilla, y no era tan frío en invierno. Era el hogar perfecto, decía mama, y las ardillas lo adoraban. 3

But what the squirrels loved the most, was going to school. Every day, except for the weekends, of course, the two siblings got down from their tree, and walked to school. The forest had a wonderful school. Behind a giant fallen tree, they used a rock as a blackboard, and the teacher wrote every lesson with charcoal. ABC and all the letters were written on the rock. That’s how the squirrels learned to read and write. One acorn plus three acorns, four acorns. That’s how they learned basics of math. “The acorns fall from the tree because of the Law of Gravity” said the teacher. That’s how they learned science. Every day, something new. They loved it.

Pero lo que las ardillas adoraban más, era ir a la escuela. Cada día, excepto los fines de semana, por supuesto, los dos hermanos bajaban de su árbol, y caminaban a la escuela. El bosque tenía una escuela maravillosa. Detrás de un árbol gigante caído, usaban una roca como pizarra, y la maestra escribía cada lección con carbón. ABC y todas las letras estaban escritas en la pizarra. Así es como las ardillas aprendían a leer y escribir. Una bellota más tres bellotas, cuatro bellotas. Así aprendían matemáticas básicas. “Las bellotas caen del árbol por la ley de la gravedad” decía la maestra. Así aprendían ciencia. Cada día, algo nuevo. Les encantaba. 5

But one day, a raccoon arrived to the school and brought news that surprised the forest. Something was happening. There were lots of precautions everybody needed to take to stay healthy.

Pero un día, un mapache llegó a la escuela y trajo noticias que sorprendieron a todo el bosque. Algo estaba pasando. Había muchas precauciones que todos necesitaban tomar para seguir con buena salud. 7

But there was something else. The classes at the giant fallen tree were canceled, to keep the community safe. “So, will we have a long vacation?” asked a tiny squirrel, thinking about going skiing. “No” replied the teacher, very serious. “It’s not a vacation. You will not come to school, but you will study at home. You will keep learning from your tree, at home, and we will do our best to help you and make everything go well.”

Pero había algo más. Las clases en el árbol gigante caído fueron canceladas, para mantener a la comunidad segura. “Entonces, ¿tendremos unas largas vacaciones?” preguntó una ardilla pequeña, pensando en irse a esquiar. “No” respondió la maestra, muy seria. “No es una vacación. Ustedes no vendrán a la escuela, pero van a estudiar en casa. Seguirán aprendiendo en su árbol, en el hogar, y haremos lo mejor que se pueda para ayudarles y que todo vaya bien”. 9

Adeline and Albert ran back to their tree and told mom everything. She already had heard about it, and was getting ready for what they called “distance learning.” Mom was a very active squirrel, and while she was collecting acorns, she found a flat piece of wood, perfect for a mini blackboard. She also saw charcoal, and brought both things up to the tree nest. “My dear children, we will work together and I will help you with your lessons” mom said. The little squirrels smiled.

Adeline y Albert corrieron a su árbol y le contaron todo a mama. Ella ya lo había escuchado, y estaba alistándose para lo que llamaron “aprendizaje a distancia.” Mamá era una ardilla muy activa, y mientras estaba recolectando bellotas, encontró un pedazo de madera plano, perfecto para una mini pizarra. También vió carbón, y llevó ambas cosas al nido. “Mis queridos hijos, trabajaremos juntos y les ayudaré con sus lecciones” dijo mamá.Las pequeñas ardillas sonrieron. 11

The teacher had written, in big leaves, lessons about science, language, history, math, physical education, arts and more. She left the lessons over the fallen tree, so the families could pick them up once a week. “My dear squirrels, you have to study these lessons and do the homework” mom said to Adeline and Albert, after she came back from the school, with lots of leaves with lessons for them. “These are special times, and we have to make a big effort and do the best we can. It’s very important!”

La maestra había escrito, en grandes hojas, lecciones sobre ciencia, lenguaje, historia, educación física, artes y más. Ella dejó las lecciones sobre el árbol caído, así las familias las podían recoger una vez por semana. “Mis queridas ardillas, tienen que estudiar estas lecciones y hacer la tarea” mama les dijo a Adeline y Albert, después de que regresó de la escuela, con muchas hojas con lecciones para ellos. “Estos son tiempos especiales, y tenemos que hacer un esfuerzo grande y lo mejor que podamos. ¡Es muy importante!” 13

When the squirrels were studying up on the tree, sometimes it was hard to concentrate. They saw their friend the parrot fly nearby and said hello. The raccoons walked by and also waved to Adeline and Albert. The music from an old radio in a cabin not too far reminded them of their birthday party last year. “Do you remember how much we all danced?” Albert asked. It was fun! “But now we have to study. I hope you remember that too, my dear squirrels!” mom said with a sweet expression.

Cuando las ardillas estaban estudiando arriba en el árbol, aveces era difícil concentrarse. Veían a su amigo el loro volar cerca y le decían hola. Los mapaches pasaban caminando y también saludaban a Adeline y Albert. La música de una antigua radio en una cabaña no muy lejos les recordó de su cumpleaños el año pasado. ¿Se acuerdan cuánto bailamos todos?” preguntó Albert. Fue divertido! “Pero ahora tenemos que estudiar ¡Espero que se acuerden de eso también, mis queridas ardillas!” dijo mamá con una dulce expresión. 15

“What do we do when we feel like jumping on branches and hiding acorns, instead of studying, mom?” asked Adeline. “Or if we want to race the rabbits, and race the ducks, discover new trees and climb branch after branch… what do we do, mom?” Albert asked. Mom thought about what to say. It had to be good. “When we understand that what we are doing is important, but start to feel distracted, we have to make an effort to focus, pay attention to what we are doing and stay with it. No racing rabbits, no ducks, no new trees. Put it all away until you complete the task” mom told them. “Focus, and complete the task!”

“¿Qué hacemos cuando sentimos ganas de saltar por las ramas y seconder bellotas, en vez de estudiar, mama?” preguntó Adeline. “O si queremos hacer carreras con los conejos y los patos, descubrir nuevos árboles y subir rama tras rama… ¿qué hacemos mama? preguntó Albert. Mamá pensó qué decir. Tenía que ser bueno. “Cuando entendemos que lo que hacemos es importante, pero comenzamos a sentirnos distraídos, tenemos que hacer un esfuerzo por enfocarnos, poner atención a lo que estamos haciendo y seguir con eso. Sin carreras con conejos, ni patos, ni nuevos árboles. A dejarlo a un lado hasta que completen la tarea” mamá les dijo. “¡Enfocarse y completar la tarea!” 17

“We heard that at school” Adeline said. “It means, pay attention to one thing and finish the work. Don’t just start it. Be responsible” mom explained. “So, all that means focus and complete the task…?” asked Albert. “Yes, my dear! And you can get used to concentrating and do it not just for school, but for everything in life. It may take effort, but you can do it!” mom said with a big squirrel smile. And she wasn’t the only one talking about paying attention. In a house nearby, that was exactly what mom was saying to her two children. They were studying and doing work with the lessons they got from a class through internet, using their computer, and also, using packets with printed pages that their own school had prepared for them. Their mom was helping them as well!

“Escuchamos eso en la escuela” dijo Adeline. “Significa, pongamos atención a una cosa y completemos el trabajo. No solo comenzarlo. Ser responsable” explicó mama. “Entonces, ¿todo eso quiere decir enfocarse y completar la tarea…?” preguntó Albert. “¡Sí, mi amor! Y se pueden acostumbrar a concentrarse y hacerlo no solo para la escuela, sino para todo en la vida. Puede tomar esfuerzo, ¡pero lo pueden lograr!” dijo mama con una gran sonrisa de ardilla.Y no era la única hablando sobre prestar atención. En una casa cerca al bosque, eso era exactamente lo que mama le estaba diciendo a dos niños. Estaban estudiando y haciendo tareas con las lecciones de una clase a través de internet, usando su computadora, y también, usando paquetes con páginas impresas que su propia escuela había preparado para ellos. ¡Su mamá también les estaba ayudando! 19

“Education will help you forever. Pay attention and learn. Use time in a productive way and use the opportunities to do good things” mom told Adeline and Albert. “Mom, you sound like an encyclo-pedia” Albert said. They all laughed. “But it all makes sense, mom. I get it now. I will do my best to focus and study and finish all the homework. Thank you, mom” Adeline said. Just then they saw the teacher passing by under their tree, carrying more leaves with new lessons written on them. The family squirrel didn’t even wait a second. “Thank you!” they told the teacher as loud as they could, and with all the gratitude in their squirrel hearts. And the learning went on.

“La educación les ayudará por siempre. Pongan atención y aprendan. Usen el tiempo de forma productive y usen las oportunidades para hacer cosas buenas” mama les dijo a Adeline y Albert. “Mama, suenas como una enciclopedia” dijo Albert. Todos rieron. “Pero tiene sentido, mama. Ya lo entiendo. Haré lo mejor que pueda para enfocarme y estudiar y completar todo el trabajo. Gracias, mama” expresó Adeline. Justo entonces vieron a la maestra caminando abajo del árbol, con más hojas con nuevas lecciones escritas en ellas. La familia ardilla no esperó ni un segundo. “¡Gracias!” le dijeron a la maestra tan fuerte como les fue posible, y con toda la gratitud de sus corazones de ardilla. Y el aprendizaje siguió. 21
