Name badges help make St Paul’s an

inclusive community. If you need a new

name badge, fill in the form inside the

pew sheet, send it to the parish office,

and one will be made and left in church

for you.

Toilets are available at the entrance to

the parish hall, which is located behind

the church.

First aid kits are located on the wall of

the kitchen in the Large Hall behind

the church and in the choir vestry.

Ask a member of the clergy or anyone

who’s wearing a name badge. We’re

here to help.

As you take your place in your pew,

please make yourself aware of the route

to the nearest emergency exit. Should

there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right,

and assemble by the roundabout on

Burwood Road.

People needing wheelchair access can

enter St Paul’s most conveniently by the

door at the base of the belltower.

Please turn your mobile phone off or on

to silent before the service starts. It’ll

save you much embarrassment later on.

Children are welcome in church at any

service. There is a selection of

children’s books and toys at the back of

the church near the font and there are

also kids’ activity sheets and pencils

available at the back of the church

where the pew sheets and prayer books

are.

Children’s Church runs during Term

Time. Meet at the back of the church at

the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist.

Please feel free to bring your children to

the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to

receive Communion if they have been

admitted to the sacrament.

Please do not take photos

inside the church or during the services

of worship without permission.

We affirm that through God’s redeeming love for all, we are one in Christ.

We respect the inherent and valuable contributions each member makes

to the Body of Christ. We celebrate our diversity and recognize the

sacred worth and dignity of all persons of any age, gender, gender

identity, gender expression, race, ethnic origin, economic reality, family

status, sexual orientation, diverse ability, or social status. We believe that

through Christ we are being included and welcomed by God and one

another. As we journey towards inclusion, we proclaim this welcome to

all God’s people, especially to those who have known the pain of

exclusion and discrimination within the church, affirming that no one is

excluded or condemned. We invite all persons to journey with us as we

discover the call of God on our lives through the ministries of St. Paul’s

Anglican Church, Burwood. To that end, St. Paul’s Anglican Church

commits to the welcome and inclusion of all persons as children of God

and declares itself to be a welcoming community of faith.

GOOD FRIDAY is the most solemn day in the calendar

of the Church when we solemnly recall the death of our

Blessed Lord on Calvary's Cross and try to grasp the

outpouring of such tremendous love. Our Good Friday

Liturgy reflects this so there will be no morning tea

served on this day nor 'meet and greet' at the door.

At the end of the Liturgy all are asked to leave The Church and

precinct in complete silence – the Parish Church will remain open for

half an hour or so after the Good Friday Liturgy.

All are welcome to remain in the Church for their own Meditations before

the crucified Saviour of the world and to pray for God’s lost children. Jesu

mercy!

In the Offertory we offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. God

graciously accepts this gift, represented in the bread and the wine, and

makes something beautiful of them.

Sin is alienation from God, self, and others.

Therefore the Greeting of the Peace is a sign of our reconciliation,

through Christ’s sacrifice, with God, self, and others, and is a

integral part of our worship of God.

Please note that Tuesday Studies will be on break from Tuesday 16th of

April and will return on Tuesday 28th of May.

Please note that Meditation will not be held during Holy Week nor on

Monday 22nd of April. It will resume on Monday 29th of April.

Just this last week we received another donation of $500 from the Op

Shop at St Luke’s Enmore towards the Parish Pantry. This certainly

helps us in provision of basic foods that we run short of each week.

On Monday morning we came in to find bags and bags of

groceries from Grace Point's congregation, for the Parish Pantry. It

couldn't have come at a better time as we were running very low on

food and there were many gaps on the shelves. Thank you to all their

faithful people who make regular contributions to the Pantry. Without

help from these and other people we would not be able to do

anywhere near as much as we do. Thank you to all our friends.

Thank you to Judith Laurence for making our Holy Week packs.

Thank you to David and Pam Priest for repairing the glass panel in

the display cabinet.

Thank you to the kind parishioner who has offered to help Mahvash

with her driving.

Thank you to Consort 8 for their generous donation.

We are extremely grateful to Shirley and James Mills for their kindness in

providing the wonderful Palm Crosses for St. Paul's, Burwood. This is very

generous of them and we thank them for this gift.

We are truly grateful for the time and energy that they devote to

creating these Palm Crosses for us to help us, to remember our Lord's

Passion and to encourage us to look forward in hope to the resurrection as

we trust God who raised our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, from the

dead.

Tickets for the Mother's Day raffle will be available for

sale. They will be $2 each or 3 for $5.

The first prize will be the much sort after hand crocheted

rug made by one of our parishioners.

The use of the ABM Lenten Envelope is a means by which we do

something positive in Lent by giving to the work of the Anglican Board

of Missions rather than giving something up (eg chocolate, alcohol,

sweets etc). Each week we should have received a different ABM

envelope for this purpose but some how it didn’t always work out that

way!

If you would like to use the ABM Lenten Envelope as part of your

Lenten experience read the information on the Envelope which speaks

about an aspect of ABM’s work and return the envelope on the plate.

St Paul’s has been a strong supporter of ABM over many years and

through the Lenten envelope we make our contribution to the wider

mission of Christ’s church at home and abroad.

Don’t miss your ABM Lenten Envelope each Sunday.

Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our Services. In James 5: 14-15 we

read:

Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have

them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer

of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has

committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV)

If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed for then please ask one of

the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anointed during any of our

Services.

The Wednesday mid-week Eucharist includes prayers for healing every

week.

Last Monday saw the last day of

playgroup for Judith Lawrence. Judith

has for years given up her time to care

for the young children and babies in

our community. She will be leaving to

spend more time with her family.

Judith has been a wealth of knowledge,

with numerous simple craft ideas to

knowing all the words to hundreds of

children's songs. She has been an

inspiration to the children, parents and

those of us who work with her.

Judith has been a wonderful friend and

mentor to Manjia and myself. Thank you

for your kindness, patience, and advice.

We need volunteers for the Artisans’ Market on Sunday 23rd of June.

Please write your name and contact details in the sheet provided at the

(In the light of our Lord’s Passion)

God of Compassion, your love for us is revealed

In your beloved son Jesus,

who was born into homelessness,

lived with nowhere to lay his head,

and who died for us in agony on the cross.

Inspire us to act in justice,

By all means at our disposal, to right the wrongs

of peoples who are suffering

the deprivations of homelessness,

and to see in them the dignity of a brother and sister

redeemed by Jesus Christ.

Let us have the commitment,

as people of the Gospel, to be ever mindful

of our obligations we have

to the poor and marginalised,

to work in your name, O God,

to turn sorrow into joy

and to bring all those who live in darkness into

your own wonderful light.

We Lord Jesus, are the children of

God. Yet, we would not be the sons

and daughters of men were we not

sometimes fearful, did not our

hearts often ache and harbour anxi-

ety for those we love who wear our

countries uniform, who serve her in

distant places.

Yet we know our Father that the ev-

erlasting arms reach out across the

world. We know that the shadow of

your wing covers all of your chil-

dren. We are persuaded that in the

world of the spirit in which we real-

ly live, neither persecution nor peril

nor sword shall be able to seperate

us from your love.

We know that the bonds of the fel-

lowship of prayer are real. We know

that at the throne of grace we are all

united, that our souls can mingle

with those we love on Earth even

separated by tumbling sea and

dreary miles and now before you

we surround them with our love and

prayers.

For them we ask support in times of

need, strength beyond their own,

confidence that you are their shep-

herd, that you never for a moment

forsake them.

The gift of inner peace a serenity

that no tragedy can destroy. That the

knowledge of God shall assure

them of eternal life of peace and joy

forever more.

Your gift of resoluteness in duty

girds them with courage and ena-

ble them to quit themselves like

men that have deposited all their

trust in their God.

A determination toward love not

hatred that the fruits of victory shall

not wither. Salvation of body and

soul and if it be possible bring

them safely home.

We thank you that the Ministry of

intercessory prayer has linked our

hearts and bound us even closer to

those we love. Closer to you and to

them. May we feel your presence

and to see that day when the love of

Christ shall live in the hearts of all

men and women everywhere.

Hear O God not only these prayers

but the unspoken inarticulate

yearning of every speaking heart

bowed before you.

In the name of Jesus Christ our

Lord, Amen.

DOUGLAS PARK

There is a place,

Gum wooded in its brown valley,

River bounded, Englished to green and colour at its core,

Sandstoned, bricked and timbered, castellated and barned,

Jumbled to a symmetry of form

that off handedly ignores its parts

Into a triumphant whole.

It is a place where a tilted cemetery dreams of a kingdom

Now and then encountered; a place of silence

Where the sorehearted traveller rests the limbs

Of bruised life

and sleeps.

It has been a place of men,

and holds the soft, hard flavours

Of Australian maleness; casual and forgiving

Gruff, astringent, awkward; strangely gentle

With the broken ones who claim its austere sustenance.

It is a place

Of healing, where the Spirit of its first people

Has long walked; where weariness has met delight,

Where chance transmutes to Providence, and one is cradled

Quietly, with no fuss

It is, above all, a place

Of God; whose voice, clipped to clearness as a muffled bell

Is always heard.

For here the inner ear

Is tuned by the long habit of the place itself

Which has learned, and teaches, listening.

Just this last week Shirley Blair, Director of SMD School in Kathmandu

spent five days with us. One of our very generous parishioners

sponsored Shirley’s trip to Australia. Accompanied by Barbara Stone

and Rosemary King, Shirley visited four independent schools in Sydney

to recruit exemplory teachers to travel to Nepal in December this year.

Each Aussie teacher will be twinned with one of SMD’s teachers where

they will work with that teacher in exploring new ways to present the

Nepali curriculum.

Here they will mentor their teacher-partner through relational learning

practices, having first been tutored by Barbara in the GROW model.

Over the course of the six days relationships will build and friendships

will form students will experience new activities as their teachers ex-

periment with new methodologies.

The school is in Bouda, in the Kathmandu Valley. The school presently

houses approximately 550 students from 5 years of age to late teens,

early twenties. Classes start at Nursery level and go through to Year 10.

Overseas placements particularly in IB Schools, are sort for those who

have demonstrated academic ability. University placements are found

for those with the ability and aspiration. Currently there are four stu-

dents about to commence doctoral studies.

The children come from remote Himalayan villages, high up in the

mountains where there is no running water, no roads, no sanitation, no

electricity, no telephones, no schools. Though Nepali they are Mongoli-

an in origin and their culture is Tibetan. Their religion is Buddhist.

Three out of four children die before reaching their fifth birthday and

many are stunted due to malnutrition. They are a religious minority in a

country that is dominated by the Hindu caste system. The ‘new’

constitution has completely disenfranchised them, treating them as the

lowest of the caste system.

SMD offer free education and full care. The main school follows the

government curriculum, enriched by instruction in Tibetan, Nepali and

English. Their Himalayan culture is considered very important and

they are given every opportunity to continue it. Because the mountain

passes are so dangerous children do not get to go home very often,

some even staying their whole school life.

This year we hope to take teachers from Pymble Ladies College, Knox

Grammar School, Ravenswood, Newington and MLC.

If you want to find out more about the school google:

Over the years the parish has benefited from the generosity of

parishioners, not only when they have been active members of the

parish, but also at the time of their death. Parishioners are invited to

remember the parish in their wills by making a bequest as a thank

offering to God and to ensure that generations to come will enjoy

worship and fellowship in well maintained buildings.

Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these

or a similar form of words: " I bequeath the sum of $............ to the

Rector and Wardens of the Anglican parish of St Paul, Burwood, to be

used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the

parish."

If you would like to make a donation to the Parish for the upkeep and

When we started collecting loose change to improve our altar linen last

year, our initial aim was to have new altar cloths for the main altar and

the north chapel for Christmas. Thanks to everyone's generosity we

have been able to purchase the first altar cloth and are well on the way

to the second altar cloth. We will then look at repairs and replacement

of some of our older vestments as well as ensuring our supply of

everyday linens such as purificators and corporals is also maintained.

Again many thanks and please feel free to continue ridding yourself of

those annoying little coins by putting them in the blue box at the back.

Collection given at St Paul’s last

Other collection given :

– Parish Pantry: $570

– Donation from Consort 8: $400

In Romans 6: 26-27 we read:

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as

we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And

God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the

Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (NRSV)

Please take time to pray, either before, during, or after the Service to allow

the Spirit to intercede for the saints according to the will of God. If you pray

for someone, you might like to send them a card. These beautiful cards are on

the table in front of the Icon of St. Paul in the South Transept, where you might

light a candle for those for whom you have prayed, and we are grateful to the

Parishioners who designed and made them for us.

Isaiah 50.54-9a; Psalm 31.9-18

Philippians 2.5-11; Luke 22.14-23 or Luke 23.1-49

Justice? Today we find ourselves at the foot of the

Cross. Jesus, our teacher and friend, has been put to

an agonising death. As the great Australian poet

James McAuley writes in O Jesus Crucified, How can

we pass by and not care? / It was our sins that nailed him there / On the

cross.

The centurion – an outsider, one of the military occupiers can see what the

insiders cannot: ‘Certainly this man was innocent,’ he says. What justice is

it for the Lamb of God?

With McAuley let us pray: ‘May we die to sin and so share / The

triumph he enacted there / On the cross.

Give thanks for the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and

Polynesia, remembering especially the Church’s Decade of Mission,

2016-2025.

Pray for the Anglican Church –

for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury;

Philip Freier of Melbourne, Primate of

Australia; Glenn, Archbishop of

Sydney; Michael Stead, our Regional

Bishop; and for all the bishops, priests,

deacons and Religious of the Anglican

Communion.

In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer

we are asked to pray for the Episcopal

Church in Jerusalem & The Middle

East, for its Archbishop, The Most

Revd Suheil Dawani and for all his

clergy and people.

Pray for Fr James and for Fr

Michael as well as for Helen and

Antonia. May God bless them

and their ministries and may we

support them as they work among us

in Christ’s name.

Pray for St Paul’s: God of mercy,

strengthen us to help shape a parish

where diversity is a source of

enrichment, compassion is common,

life’s poetry realized, suffering

lightened through sharing, justice

attended, joy pervasive, hope lived,

the hum of the universe heard, and

together with you and each other we

build what is beautiful, true, worthy

of your generosity to us, an echo of

your kingdom. Amen. (Ted Loder)

Pray for, St Matthew’s,

Zababdeh, (West Bank,

Palestinian Territorries), our

Anglican Communion Partner:

We remember especially their Parish

Priest, Fr Saleem Dawani, and his

ministry in the parish. We remember

also Jameel Maher, who acts as the St

Matthew’s partnership link person

with us. May both our parishes be

blessed by the link we are

establishing.

Pray for the Church’s mission:

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out

your arms of love on the hard wood of

the cross that everyone might come

within the reach of your saving

embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit

that we, reaching forth our hands in

love, may bring those who do not

know you to the knowledge and love

of you; for the honour of your name.

Amen. (Author unknown)

Pray for our Children’s Church:

The Lord said, ‘Let the little children

come to me and do not forbid them

for such is the kingdom of heaven’.

Bless, Lord, your children who now

stand before you in prayer. Help them

to understand the depth of your love.

O Lord, bless our Children's Church

and all its future endeavours, that

through it we may glorify you with

your Father and the Holy Spirit, now,

always and forever. Amen.

to life, from falsehood to truth; lead me

from despair to hope, from fear to trust;

lead me from hate to love, from war to

Let peace fill our hearts, our world,

our universe.

Pray for all in need, remembering

especially this week all caregivers.

and grace to be able to handle things

they might not normally be able to

handle.
