Gospel Meditation December 23, 2018 4th Sunday of Advent
Here we are, mere days from Christmas, and we hear a Gospel
anticipating the birth of another child. Mary has received word
that her cousin Elizabeth is with child. Pregnant as she is, Mary
"set out and traveled to the hill country in haste." She has
recently received the greatest news of her life - that she is to be
mother to the Messiah by the power of the Holy Spirit - but her
concern is for her cousin in need. Through God's grace, Elizabeth
turns it into an opportunity to honor the coming Christ. "Blessed
are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb."
Mary's example of selflessness should inspire us.
As Christmas draws near, there is plenty of goodness to
anticipate for many of us. We'll reunite with family and friends,
uphold time-honored traditions, swap stories old and new,
exchange gifts, and welcome Jesus at the Christmas liturgy.
These are wonderful things! Of course, they probably all come
with their own to-do list. Shop for last-minute gifts, pick up
recipe ingredients, ready the guest room, or pack your own
bags. Mary probably had things to do as well. She had a lot to
consider, for one thing. How do you plan to tell your parents
you're pregnant, but no man was involved? When Joseph finds
out, who will care for the practical needs of you and your child?
Into what may have been a chaos of questions, Mary receives
news that someone is in need. She goes immediately.
In these final days before Christmas, stay watchful and awake!
You never know when God might invite you to welcome,
hospitality, and compassion. It might be tempting to reject the
opportunity for your own needs. Follow the example of Mary! If
God is providing you an opportunity to love, He will provide the
means to accomplish all your other tasks. This Christmas season,
may you too hear, "Blessed are you who believed that what was
spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Dear Parish Family,
Are you ready for Christmas? It’s a question we are often asked. But I ask: how can we as Catholics really be ready for Christmas? How can we keep the season of holiness in our hearts as we “wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ”?
First, we must not let Christmas just be a passing day. Live in the spirit of Christmas each day. I invite you to make prayer a critical part of your day. Even if it is just a few extra minutes a day, take that time to reflect on the Nativity of our Lord, God’s gift to us as a promise of salvation. You can do this by continuing to read Sacred Scripture and the teachings of our Church, by having a stronger devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Mass. Don’t forget to stop by at our beautiful Adoration Chapel. It is there that Jesus Christ is really and truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. It is a wonderful place for private prayer in the presence of Jesus Christ. Another way of reflecting and treasuring this gift of Christmas is by regularly making a self-examination of conscience, and doing those good works for those entrusted to our care and for those in need.
Second, I encourage you also to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, which brings with it grace and peace. I hope you have taken advantage of our Advent Reconciliation Service or our regularly scheduled Confession time on Saturdays. Confessions will resume on Saturday, January 5 from 3:15-4:15pm at Holy Trinity Church.
Third, I urge us all to share our hope with friends and family, inviting them to celebrate Mass with us. In this way, we can truly be ready for Christmas. Please see our Christmas Season Mass Schedule listed in the bulletin. I encourage everyone to participate in these special services.
Lastly as your Pastor, I treasure the gift of you and the dedication, sacrifices, and hard work you have shown to make this parish a beacon of Christ’s love. In particular, I thank those who serve in the various ministries and organizations. On behalf of Father Marion Wroblewski and Bishop Robert Kurtz, and all of the Staff at Holy Trinity Parish, I wish each of you a blessed and joyous Christmas and New Year! Please be assured of my prayers for your intentions and a remembrance at Holy Mass.

Inspiration for the Week
Life is often unfair. We look at all of the injustices in our world, people being hurt and exploited, and wonder why God has abandoned us or why He won't fix what is happening. God did fix it. He sent his Son into the world as our just ruler and the one who will bring peace. The problem is we still turn away and think that we can do better. The Son of Justice has come into the world. We can work for change and be the voice of justice. We can dream and do things differently. Blessed are you who believe that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.

A new way to reflect upon and study Sunday Scriptures

When Mass was celebrated in Latin, the Sunday Missal was essential equipment for Catholics who wanted to follow and understand the weekly readings and prayers. With Latin on one side and their native tongue on the other, the faithful could engage with the Word of God and with the liturgy using a keepsake-quality volume of their own.
Even after the Church began to celebrate the Mass in the vernacular, some of us may remember our parents or grandparents dutifully toting their treasured Missals along every Sunday, even though they weren’t really needed anymore. Post-Vatican II Catholics, for the most part, have jettisoned the Missal as a vestigial accessory. We walk in, genuflect, take our seats, and hear the Sunday readings for the first and only time as they are proclaimed from the ambo.
For Kassie Manning and Christie Peters, roommates at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, that passive approach to attendance at Mass just wasn’t enough. They went to Mass faithfully every Sunday, but like many Catholics, they “were hungry for something more,” says Christie.
They joined a campus-wide non-denominational Christian fellowship, where their Protestant brothers and sisters taught them not only a greater appreciation for the Bible. Kassie and Christie also began the practice of taking a journal to Mass and jotting down notes on the homily, the readings, or anything that resonated deeply during the liturgy. They took this habit with them after they graduated in 2012 and took up their respective careers in the Houston area.
But a blank journal doesn’t include scripture. In order to refer to and highlight the Sunday readings you need a large missal or Bible of your own. The delicate pages of a missal don’t stand up to underlining and note-taking, and anyway there’s not enough room. Plus, hauling two large books around and flipping between them during Mass is cumbersome and distracting.
Then, almost two years ago, Kassie and Christie, who remained friends after college, both voiced the same thought: What if those two things—Sunday Missal and journal—were combined into one volume?
“We looked all over for a single-volume publication that combined the Sunday liturgical readings and had space for journaling and note-taking,” says Christie. “But we discovered that the product we wanted didn’t exist. So we asked one another, ‘what if we created it ourselves?’ ”
“Once we said it out loud,” says Kassie, “we felt called to do it.”
In August of 2017, the Every Sacred Sunday Mass Journal was born.
The Mass Journal contains all the Sunday readings for the year, beginning with Advent, and is formatted with plenty of space for notes, prayer requests, and action items. The pages are sturdy enough for highlighting and vigorous writing, and also color-coded according to the liturgical seasons.
“We feel like this is the Holy Spirit’s project,” says Christie. “The book is filling a space that hadn’t been filled, and He gave it to us to be His hands and feet to bring it into the world.”
For Jen Bartley, our Holy Trinity Youth Minister, the Mass Journal is “a sacred space to spend special time with God in the scriptures.” She uses the journal to prepare for the upcoming Mass, starting on Monday morning. When the readings she has been reflecting on for almost a week are finally proclaimed at the liturgy, the Word of God falls on the well-prepared soil of her heart.
I use the journal a little differently. I start on Friday or Saturday by reading the Scriptures for that weekend’s Mass. On Sunday, I underline passages and jot down notes on the homily. Then, in the days that follow, I refer to my notes, prayers and highlights, paying particular attention to the “Go Forth” section, which serves as a spiritual action plan for the week.
The book is beautifully illustrated with watercolors by Christie, who was an art major in college. “We were hungry for this,” she says. “It’s clear that many, many other Catholics are hungry for the same thing.”

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit the Diocese of Joliet and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money.
This law no longer has an expiration date so you are free to make annual gifts to our organization this year and well into the future.
Why Consider This Gift?
» Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.
» You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
» If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

Q. I've already named the Holy Trinity as the beneficiary of my IRA. What are the benefits if I make a gift now instead of after my lifetime? A. Q. I have several retirement accounts—some are pensions and some are IRAs. Does it matter which retirement account I use?
A. Yes. Direct rollovers to a qualified charity can be made only from an IRA. Under certain circumstances, however, you may be able to roll assets from a pension, profit sharing, 401(k) or 403(b) plan into an IRA and then make the transfer from the IRA directly to the Diocese of Joliet. To determine if a rollover to an IRA is available for your plan, speak with your plan administrator.
Q. Can my gift be used as my required minimum distribution under the law? A. Yes, absolutely. If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution, the IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Contact your IRA custodian to complete the gift.
Q. Do I need to give my entire IRA to be eligible for the tax benefits? A. No. You can give any amount under this provision, as long as it is $100,000 or less this year. If your IRA is valued at more than $100,000, you can transfer a portion of it to fund a charitable gift.
Q. I have two charities I want to support. Can I give $100,000 from my IRA to each? A. No. Under the law, you can give a maximum of $100,000. For example, you can give each organization $50,000 this year or any other combination that totals $100,000 or less. Any amount of more than $100,000 in one year must be reported as taxable income.
Q. My spouse and I would like to give more than $100,000. How can we do that? A. If you have a spouse (as defined by the IRS) who is 70½ or older and has an IRA, he or she can also give up to $100,000 from his or her IRA.

On Sunday, December 2, Holy Trinity Catholic School hosted the 8th annual Donuts with St. Nicholas. It was a tremendous success! Hundreds of guests, including school families and parishioners attended this event.
Holy Family Hall was festive and inviting. The children were busy making crafts, playing games, learning the history of St. Nicholas, and visiting with the good Saint himself. And of course, eating donuts! Holy Trinity School Principal Dr. Pam Simon also shared the story of St. Nicholas, the real Santa Claus, with children that attended the event.
A special thank you to all those who volunteered their time to make it a success, especially Mrs. Lisa Ryan who chaired the event.

Adoration Chapel: The Blessed Sacrament is accessible for adoration 24 hours each day. The door is open from 5am -10pm. Please contact Joe or Maureen Garro at 630-968-3855 or [email protected] to gain access during night hours.
Saint Peregrine Devotion: Offered on the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus: Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the first Friday of the month after the 8:15am Mass.
Anointing of the Sick: Offered on the first Saturday of the month at the 8:15am Mass.
Baptisms: Baptisms are held the second and fourth Sundays after the 11:30am Mass. Contact the Religious Education office to arrange for parents and godparents to attend the Baptismal Prep Class held on the first Tuesday of each month.
Weddings: Contact the Parish office and make arrangements at least six months in advance.
Funerals: The Funeral Director will contact the Parish office regarding arrangements.

End of Year Giving at Holy Trinity
Check and cash donations to the parish will be accepted for the 2018 calendar year until January 4, 2019 at the parish office. For tax purposes, please remember to date your check for 2018. Online donations related to 2018 must be made via the parish website by December 31, 2018. Select Support Us in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and click on “Online Giving”. It is safe, secure and convenient!
Gifts of stock or mutual funds should be handled through the Diocese of Joliet. Instructions and forms are available on the church page of the parish website www.holytrinitywestmont.org click on the Support Us menu at the top of the page. Select Stock Donation. The forms include a letter of intent that allows you to designate the intention of the gift, specifically Holy Trinity Parish, and whether it is for the overall parish operations or specific (e.g. Parish Center, School, etc.) For more information on stock donations, please call the Diocesan Office at 815-221-6202 and speak to Jody Mech or via email at [email protected]. Please also let me know of the pending transaction so your donation is properly credited.
