Unfortunately we were beaten, but we came further than we ever did before in the history of our school. We could not have done this without our sub team who prepared us for the day, our researchers who looked up points for us and Ms. Fitzmau-rice, Mr O’ Neil who adjudicated the debates and helped us. Without Ms O’ Neil we could not have come this far, she stayed after school with us, made sure what we did was right and made sure we enjoyed it. Many thanks to her for all her help. It was a great experience.

Simon Jennings in 6th also brought in his drone. We had loads of fun flying it. We would like to thank Miss Fitzmaurice for organizing this and the boys in 6th class for putting the folder together. Well done everybody for a great years work in science, maths and engineering. Chinaza Ogwudiegwu, Duncan Rose. 6th class.

Allocation of teachers to classes is not confirmed and will be notified on the school website over the summer holidays. We are interviewing for teachers over the summer holi-days and because of this we are unable to inform you who will be teaching your child in September. We do not know our SNA allocation as yet but should know before the end of June.

Last month, Conor Daly (me), a 6th class boy went to the first trial of the primary games. 5 selectors had to

bring the number from over 160 boys down to 50 for the next trial. Two weeks later I went back to the next trial in Ballygarvan GAA pitch where the team was to be picked down to 22. These 22 were the

team of the primary games. On the 23rd of May, 11

players were picked to play in the Tipperary match and

I and 10 other boys were picked to play in the Kerry

match if Cork beat Tipper-ary in the Munster semi-final. I was selected to

play in the full back line wearing the number 3 jer-

sey. Unfortunately Cork were beaten by Tip-

perary and Conor does

not get the opportunity to face Kerry now.

Basketball 15/16: Basketball is now over for the year. Quizzard ’15/16: . Tim McCarthy and Cian Scally are in charge of the quiz this year. We are now at the final stage. Both boys are themselves in the Final. Chess: We are at present competing in the Cork City Chess League.

Soccer Competitions - all competitions have reached the semi-final / final stage and these will be played in the next fortnight. 10 to 9 soccer for Rang 6 is now finished for this year. Super League: this is now on every Monday, Wednesday and Fri-day mornings at 8.50 a.m. for boys in Rang 5 and Rang 6. All boys in these class were valued and the boys themselves could challenge their value. 6 managers were given €1,000.000 to spend and buy players. You had to have a minimum of 7 players on your team so you had to spend wisely. For example Conor Daly (Rang 6) was valued at €500,000. When William Chen bought him he had only €500,000 left to spend! Though Conor did score the winning goal in his match recently. At the semi final stage managers will be given €300,000 more to spend and more players can be bought and sold! Oh, if you are late for your match you can be sold immediately. Needless to say very few are late!

7 a side Gaelic Football - is organised by Mr. Gavin O’Riordan and is held every Friday at lunchtime. It has now reached the finals. Jim Twomey’s team will play against Adam Crawford’s team soon.

Swimming: is now finished for the year. Gardening: Mr. Gavin O’Riordan is organising Gardening classes after school for Rang 2 on Tuesdays.

Wardens – Boys in fifth/sixth class train with Mr. Harte for Jun-ior Warden Duty. Many thanks to Mr. Harte.

Macbeth - practices are now over. Yesterday we played a gig in De Barra’s. Tomorrow night is our first show, fingers crossed! All tickets were sold out in 2 days.

GAA - Timmy Anglin is on each Wednesday. Rugby - Ian Rea - finished for the year.

By Cal O’Mahony Rang 3 3rd and 4th class school tour went

really well. We went to West

Cork Secret near Timoleague. Everyone really enjoyed this year’s school tour. We

left in the bus at around 9:20 and came back at 3:05. When we got on the bus every-

one was really excited to go. Some boys had been there before but some hadn’t, so it

was more exciting for them. The bus drive took about 35 mins. When we got there we

were split into 4 groups. We started off doing orienteering around the central area and

then we took a water break and did orienteering around all the land. Next we played

some mini games like go karting and milking the cows. When we finished that we

went in for some yummy pizza. Now was the fun part, we got to do the muddy as-

sault courses. We started off by doing the junior assault course, we did it 4 times.

When everyone was finished we did this warm up course. Next we did the adult as-

sault course, we had to run through the forest and at the finish we had to jump into

this really deep pool. Now was the part all our group had been waiting for - the mud

slide!!! It was about 55m long and when you reached the 55m mark you would go

flying into the mud. You are allowed to go sitting, lying down, doubles and triples. At

the end it was a huge success.

Thank you to the teachers for organising this fantastic trip. P.S. bring spare clothes as you will be as dirty as a pig. Click here

“Just One” collection for the year is now over. Many thanks to the Emmet Hotel who received a donation of €250 recently and passed it on to the “Just One” fund.

Our total this year is €1673.11 ! Well done Adam, Jack and Eoin who have worked tirelessly this year on the project. Every week on a Fri-day the boys call to each classroom to col-lect the money that has

been brought in during the week.

If you would like to book an ad for the coming school year 2016 -2017 please let Thelma know as soon as possible. The number of ads is limited. Our Links goes to all parents in the school - 10 times a year - at the beginning of each month. The cost is €20 per issue or at a discount of €150 for the entire year! Please ring Thelma 8834487 if you are interested.

By Liam O'Connell every year our school takes part in a competition called the cork city sports. This year it is on the 1st of June. Myself, Conor Daly, Tim Mcarthy and Dylan Geaney will be participating in the over elevens category. Prince Iyalla, Paul Nnotum, Luke Kelleher and Des Ken-neally are participating in the under elevens category. We have been training everyday from quarter past two until ten to three. We are practising relays and sprints and recording our time. Many thanks to Mrs. Horgan for coaching us everyday.

A number of boys in the school are allergic to nuts and for them any contact with nuts or products containing traces of nuts can be dangerous for example NUTELLA!!!! Please be aware of this when organising your child’s lunch and if possible do not allow your child to bring anything contain-ing nuts to school. Your help in this matter is very much appreciated. p.s. Please give your children water to drink coming to school - not sweet or fizzy drinks.

As the sun begins to shine and the weather gets warmer things in the garden are also heating up! Every morning from my desk I look out to see the glasshouse full of boys watering the seeds and plants they have sown. The Sunshine garden is full of new life and the planting beds are full of many vegetables and flowers. The Courtyard garden is getting more colourful every day. Our recycled tins are all painted and full of plants. Mr. O’Riordan and 2nd class have been busy collecting bottletops for their new art project which is now hanging in the Courtyard Garden for all to see. Our tomato plants are growing fast and we are all waiting for the first batch of strawberries to arrive. Every now and then 6th class hear a knock on the door and Mrs. Minihan arrives in with a new beautiful clem-atis for us. Sherpa kids have also been busy in the Sunshine Garden and have created a very colourful bed. 3rd, 4th class have created a ‘Time Poor’ gar-den……its worth calling by to see it. Once again this year we have entered our garden into the Cork County Council Muintir na Tire Gar-den Competition. The judges arrived on June 3rd to see our garden and boys took them on a tour. Fin-gers crossed they will liked our garden. Many thanks to everyone who has helped out in the garden this year. Finbarr for the endless number of jobs he does for us. Susan for her inspirational ide-as. Mr. O’Riordan and the Perfect Planters of 2nd class and all the teachers in the school who work so hard to keep our garden looking so well and so full of life. Thanks also to Sherpa Kids for all the work

they have done creating their colourful planting bed. The school garden is an integral part of Scoil na mBuachaillí and you are welcome to take a look if you are passing through. Ms. Fitzmaurice The School Glass House Cian Downey 6th Class. In our school we have a beautiful Glass House located in the Courtyard Garden. We have over fifty pots inside it and this gives all boys in the school a wonderful opportunity to learn about agriculture, gardening and especially taking care of things! Thanks to Finbar, Ms.Fitzmaurice and the late Pat Collins we have an amazing place of our own to grow learn and take care all at the same time. In these pots we have different varieties of plants, vegetables herbs and plants. Among these varieties are cucumber, tomatoes, petunia flowers, peas and much more. Last year we won the Muintir na Tire School garden competition for the best new Garden. I really do hope we can win another award again this year. If your child has any interest in this subject he is more than welcome to bring in things and grow them. The Hanging Baskets Denis Karpa. 6th Class Late February Cian Collins and I planted flowers in a hanging baskets. I put them in the glasshouse and we have been watering them and mind-ing them every day. Since they were planted they’ve grown so big. And on the 23/05/16 we hung the hanging baskets outside the front of the school. You can see them if you are passing by!

agement for their help this year. Best wishes to the boys in Rang 6 who are leaving the

school at the end of June. Best wishes also to their parents and families - many of whom have been in and out to Scoil na mBuachaillí for over 8 years.

Best wish to Tomas who is leaving SnB this year. Thank you to all the staff of Scoil na mBuachaillí for

their hard work and dedication over the past school year. It is very much appreciated by all. Thanks also to the staff who organised school tours and outings

this year. Thanks to the Ian for all his work this year with the boys in rugby. Thanks to Timmy Anglin for his coach-ing. Thank you to Mr. Harte for his work with the wardens. Thank you to all the parents who have helped out with Literacy Lift Off again this year - their help has been in-valuable. Thank you to Eileen Collins and her friends!

School Reports will be sent home on Mon-day 20th of June. This year as last year, they will include scores from the Micra-T and Sigma-T tests (Literacy and Maths). These have been given to parents at Parent / Teacher meetings for many years. If you wish to know more about the scores please click this NCCA link. It will be also attached to each report on a cream sheet. Please note: some parts of Reports will be left blank as they are not relevant to your son e.g. Irish Reading in Infants. This year you will also be informed of how many days your child missed school - right up to the 15th of June - this is the day the reports are printed.

An updated ver-sion of next year’s school

calendar will be uploaded during the summer. It will be found under School Year Calendar. It will include the swimming timetable (which is the only thing missing off it at the mo-ment).

It would be so much safer if you did not

bring children across the road by the hand at 3.00 p.m. often crossing between cars and traffic, which can be dangerous and may even encourage another child to attempt the same on his own with possible disastrous consequences. Please, always use the wardens, when on duty and, at the very least, the zebra crossing which is there for this purpose. Thank you.

If you would like to become part of our Literacy Lift Off support team for 2014/2015 please contact Ms. Carol O’Boyle on 8834487 and give your name. Also if you prefer to do just one day / or part of a day please speci-fy this when you ring. Many thanks again to last year’s team - many who are staying on again next year. Thanks also to Ms. Carol O’Boyle for all her hard work in this area. MISSING / NOT YET RETURNED YOUR LITERACY LIFT OFF BOOK A number of Literacy Lift Off books have gone missing. Unfortunately books for this scheme cannot be bought singly and one would have to purchase a Level in order to get one book - this could cost €100s. Please look after the books your child has been given. It is in your best interest to do so.

A number of staff have informed me that a number of the Rental Scheme books have been damaged this year by a few boys. Many of the books were only purchased last September. Unfortunately the scheme cannot afford for this to continue, and later on this month we will have to ask the parents of these boys to pay for the books that were damaged. Should it continue in future we will not be in a position to offer Rental Scheme books to these children any longer.

Please ensure all coats are collected by the summer holidays. Any coats left after that will be given to the local charity shop!

Please note: do not send in any money until September. This is just an information note - more details will be on September’s Links. Rental Scheme: €30 (for children in classes 1st to 6th

only). Allianz Insurance: (Optional) €9 (24 hour cover), €6

(school activities). Art and Craft Money: €12 (for children in all classes). Drama: €2.00 (in total) Photocopying and Printing: €20 per year or €10 per term

- collected in term 1 and term 2 - or all in September. Swimming: €44 per child for 6 lessons - hopefully! Kayaking: for boys in Rang 5. €50 Surfing: for boys in Rang 6 only. €80 French: (Rang 2 - Rang 6) : €6.00 per term for 2 terms. Elocution: is for all children €7.00. Zumba Dancing: €5.00 for 5 lessons - for children in Jun-

ior Infants to Rang 1 Folk Dancing: €6.00 for children from Junior Infants to

Rang 3. Christmas Magazine: €4 - if you wish you may book your

Christmas Annual now. GAA - the GAA Club has informed us that no fees will be

charged in future for this service. We thank them for this.

Enrolling for musical instruments with Kay and Laurie for 2016/2017 takes place on Tuesday 6th of September at 1.30 - 3.00 p.m. in the Music Room.

Patrick Murphy has been a tremendous supporter of SnB - on the Parent’s Association and on the Board of Management. This June his son Eoin is finishing Rang 6. Patrick has been involved in numerous fundraising activities over the years - Fundraising Committee, Family Fundays, Remembrance Tree, Cake Sales, and many other things. Fund raising 2015/2016 Well we started off in Oct 2015 where the scene was set for Spooky Sunday and money raised was €995. A great afternoon at Lisselan was had by adults and children. This year after much deliberation we did not have the traditional cake sale and instead with the organisation skills of Eileen Collins had a very successful Tea party and raised €4000. This was a sold out event and was attended by both teachers and par-ents of the school. Finally we had the church gate collection last week and again a fantastic €1000 collected. Each year we pay towards events / bus trips / treats prize giving’s etc etc (the list is endless). There are no planned events for 2016/2017 put we will keep you posted.

We would like to thank all the helpers and people who contributed time, money, baking etc to make these events so successful. A big thank you to Mr. Harrington and Thelma for all their help especially with all the texts, emails etc. AGM It is with sadness that we are losing Patrick Murphy, Louise Cullinane, Angela Walsh and Ann Crawford from our committee this year however they have said they will be available to offer any advice and answer queries that may

be needed when the new committee is elected in Oct 2016 AGM. We want to thank Patrick for the continuous use of the “man shed” and equipment / paints etc over all the years. I know we would not have achieved some of the great results at Funday Sunday & Spooky Sunday without his creativity knowledge and imagina-tion. The new committee will be elected at the AGM and this will be notified closer to the time.

Kind Regards The Parents Association

On behalf of the staff of Scoil na mBuachaillí I would again like to thanks the Parent’s Association for their tremendous support to the school every year. We are extremely fortunate to have a Parent’s body that is so active and so positive and work so hard for the benefit of all the boys in the school. Barth Harrington (Príomhoide)
